Frost Excerpt More information Chapter 1 Introduction to Igneous Petrology 1.1 Introduction Igneous petrology is the study of magma and the rocks that solidify from magma. Th us igneous petrologists are concerned with the entire spectrum of processes that describe how magmas are produced and how they ascend through the mantle and crust, their mineralogical and geochemical evolution, and their eruption or emplacement to form igneous rocks. Igneous petrology requires a working knowledge of mineralogy. Readers who wish to review the characteristics of the major rock-forming igneous minerals will fi nd a concise sum- mary in Appendix 1. Th e appendix emphasizes the identifi cation of rock-forming minerals in hand sample and in thin section. In addition, the appendix includes descriptions of minerals found in minor abundance but commonly occurring in igneous rocks, including accessory minerals that contain trace amounts of uranium and are important geochronometers. Before geologists can understand the origin of igneous rocks, they must classify and describe them. Th is chapter introduces the classifi cation of igneous rocks using the mineralogical classifi cation system recom- mended by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Subcommission on the Systematics of Igneous Rocks, which has the advantage that it is relatively simple and can be applied in the fi eld. For rocks that are too fi ne-grained to name using this classifi cation, a geochemical classifi cation can be employed instead. Th e simplest of these, the total alkali versus silica classifi cation, is introduced in this text.

    Title 430 – National Soil Survey Handbook Part 629 – Glossary of Landform and Geologic Terms Subpart A – General Information 629.0 Definition and Purpose This glossary provides the NCSS soil survey program, soil scientists, and natural resource specialists with landform, geologic, and related terms and their definitions to— (1) Improve soil landscape description with a standard, single source landform and geologic glossary. (2) Enhance geomorphic content and clarity of soil map unit descriptions by use of accurate, defined terms. (3) Establish consistent geomorphic term usage in soil science and the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS). (4) Provide standard geomorphic definitions for databases and soil survey technical publications. (5) Train soil scientists and related professionals in soils as landscape and geomorphic entities. 629.1 Responsibilities This glossary serves as the official NCSS reference for landform, geologic, and related terms. The staff of the National Soil Survey Center, located in Lincoln, NE, is responsible for maintaining and updating this glossary. Soil Science Division staff and NCSS participants are encouraged to propose additions and changes to the glossary for use in pedon descriptions, soil map unit descriptions, and soil survey publications. The Glossary of Geology (GG, 2005) serves as a major source for many glossary terms. The American Geologic Institute (AGI) granted the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly the Soil Conservation Service) permission (in letters dated September 11, 1985, and September 22, 1993) to use existing definitions. Sources of, and modifications to, original definitions are explained immediately below. 629.2 Definitions A. The 1-bunt Stuart batholith is a Late Cretaceous calc-alkaline pluton · . canposed of intrusive phases ranging in canposition fran two-pyroxene gabbro to granite. This batholith appears to represent the plutonic counterpart of the high-alumina basalt association. Mineralogical, petrological and chrono­ logical characteristics are consistent with a m:::rlel in which the intrusive series evolved fran one batch of magnesian high-alumina basalt by successive crystal fractionation of ascending residual magrna. ' canputer m:::rleling of this intrusive sequence provides a quanti- tative evaluation of the sequential change of magrna CCIIlfX)sition. These calculations indicate that this intrusive suite is consanguineous, and that subtraction of early-fonned crystals £ran the oldest magrna is capable of reprcducing the entire magrna series with a remainder of 2-3% granitic liquid. Increasing f()tash discrepancies prcduced by the rrodeling may reflect the increasing effects of volatile transfer in progressively rrore hydrous and silicic melts. Mass-balances between the arrounts of curn-ulate and residual liquid ccnpare favorably with the observed arrounts of intenrediate rocks exposed in the batholith, but not with the mafic rocks. Ma.fie cum: ulates must lie at depth. Mafic magmas probably fractionated by crystal settling, while quartz diorite and rrore granitic magrnas underwent a process of inward crystallization producing exposed gradationally zoned plutons.Aat present erosional levels.

    Boyhood Days in the Owens Valley 1890-1908 Beyond the High Sierra and near the Nevada line lies Inyo County, California—big, wild, beautiful, and lonely. In its center stretches the Owens River Valley, surrounded by the granite walls of the Sierra Nevada to the west and the White Mountains to the east. Here the remote town of Bishop hugs the slopes of towering Mount Tom, 13,652 feet high, and here I was born on January 6, 1890. When I went to college, I discovered that most Californians did not know where Bishop was, and I had to draw them a map. My birthplace should have been Candelaria, Nevada, for that was where my parents were living in 1890. My father was an engineer in the Northern Belle silver mine. I was often asked, "Then how come you were born in Bishop?" and I replied, "Because my mother was there." The truth was that after losing a child at birth the year before, she felt Candelaria's medical care was not to be trusted. The decline in the price of silver, the subsequent depression, and the playing out of the mines in Candelaria forced the Albright family to move to Bishop permanently. We had a good life in Bishop. I loved it, was inspired by its aura, and always drew strength and serenity from it. I have no recollection of ever having any bad times. There weren't many special things to do, but what- ever we did, it was on horseback or afoot. Long hours were spent in school.
