We’ll keep the celebration going with a program to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the BPP newspaper and the birthday of Huey P. Newton. Ben Tucker’s Good Run en Tucker’s new memoir, A Good Run, is a coming-of-age story that spans the B post-World War II era to the days of the Civil Rights Movement. As a student at San Jose State in the early 1960s, he was a world-class middle distance runner. Mr. Tucker worked as an administrator for the University of California at Berkeley and the UC Office of the President for 25 years. He will read from his memoir. Do you have something to say? Do you want to write a better world into existence? Do you believe in the power of your community? You could be Oakland's next Youth Poet Laureate!

For the 6th consecutive year, Oakland is looking for its next Youth Poet Laureate to serve for one year as city ambassador for literacy, arts, and youth expression. The Laureate will receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Poets who enter the final round or receive honorable mentions will also have opportunities to perform and network with peers and leaders across the Bay Area.
