Abstract It is generally agreed that some numbers such as three and nine which appear frequently in the two Eddas hold special significances in Norse mythology. Furthermore, numbers appearing in sagas not only denote factual quantity, but also stand for specific symbolic meanings. This tradition of number symbolism could be traced to Pythagorean thought and to St. Augustine‟s writings. But the result in Old Norse literature is its own system influenced both by Nordic beliefs and Christianity. This double influence complicates the intertextuality in the light of which the symbolic meanings of numbers should be interpreted. -
Correcting Traditions and Inventing History: the Manipulation of Mythology and of the Past in the Nibelungen-Literature of the 19Th and 20Th Centuries
FULVIO FERRARI (Università degli Studi di Trento) Correcting traditions and inventing history: the manipulation of mythology and of the past in the Nibelungen-literature of the 19th and 20th centuries Summary. This contribution analyses several relevant rewrites of the Nibelungen legend in order to point out the narrative strategies deployed by different authors to establish a relationship between the traditional plot (or, rather, plots), which were handed down through centuries by oral transmission and Medieval sources, and a concrete historical context. The Medieval written versions of the legend – both the Old Norse and the German ones – show little or, in fact, no interest in the historical setting of the narrative and do not seem to pursue any reliable or chronological con- sistence. The modern re-writers, on the contrary, have often set the action in specific historical contexts, a choice of setting which is usually strictly connected to the au- thor’s artistic, cultural and ideological agenda. To this end, I have singled out texts which, in my opinion, reflect important changes in mentality and culture, without belabouring the variances in their literary worth: first of all, I took into account some rewrites which belong to the German 19th cen- tury (Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, Ernst Raupach, Friedrich Hebbel and Felix Dahn); then Ibsen’s theatrical rewrite of the Völsunga saga; the fantasy novels by the contemporary new-heathen writers Stephan Grundy and Diana L. Paxson; and, finally, the iconoclastic theatrical pastiches of the playwrights Heiner Müller and Volker Braun, whose works are deeply rooted in the experience of the German Democratic Republic. -

F: 2:30 - 3:20 Coursepack Email: [email protected] Reserve Texts Course Description This course will provide an overview of the myths, religious beliefs, and heroic traditions of the Vikings up to and including their conversion to Christianity. Primary sources will be studied (in English translation) to provide an understanding of how this knowledge has been preserved and the inherent biases of such material. We will read introductory excerpts from non-Germanic sources including Tacitus and Ibn Fadlan. The major focus of the course, however, will be on medieval Scandinavian sources such as Saxo Grammaticus, Snorri Sturluson, the Icelandic Poetic Edda, and several Icelandic sagas. Examples drawn from archeological artifacts, art works, and movies will also be discussed. Course Objectives 1. To discuss the original sources that preserve knowledge of Norse mythology. 2. These four stanzas, which mark the beginning of the section Rúnatals þáttr, constitute some of the most controversial and important eddic poetry. Concerning the passage, Jens Peter Schjødt says it is one of the most interesting scenes in the entire Old Norse Corpus from the perspective of Religious History. -

Whether human, deities, or some other type of species, the shape-shifter can be categorized as an ambiguous and fluid figure who breaks down many typical societal borderlines including those relating to gender, biology, animal/ human, and sexual orientation. As a whole, this research project seeks to better understand the background, nature, and identity of these figures, in part by approaching the subject psychoanalytically, more specifically within the framework established by the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, as part of his theory of archetypes. -
The Hostages of the Northmen and the Place Names Can Indicate Traditions That Are Not Related to Hostages
Part V: Place Names Place names can provide information about hostages that can- not be obtained from other sources. In his study of sacred place names in the provinces around Lake Mälaren in present Sweden, Vikstrand points out that these names reflect ‘a social representa- tiveness’ that have grown out of everyday language.1 As a source, they can therefore represent social groups other than those found in the skaldic poetry which were directed to rulers in the milieu of the hird, and thus primarily give knowledge of performances of the elite. There are difficulties with analysis of place names, because sev- eral aspects of them must be considered. Place names are names of places, but Vikstrand points out that in the term ‘place’ you can distinguish three components: a geographical locality, a name, and a content that gives meaning to it.2 The relationship between these components is complicated and it is not always the given geographical location is the right one. For example, local people can ascribe place names an importance that they did not had dur- ing the time the researcher investigates. In this part, the point of departure will be a few place names from mainly eastern Scandinavia and neighboring areas. These are examples of historical provinces in present Sweden, Finland, and Estonia that can provide information about hostages; a com- parison is made with an example from Ireland. In western Scandinavia, corresponding place names with ‘hos- tage’ as component do not appear. It has been conducted in order to clarify certain issues regarding how ancient Scandinavians might have perceived the world and then in particular trees, metaphysical trees and real trees. In the discussion chapters, the thesis reflects upon narratives in the extant written source material which would have been part of the phenomenology of trees, in the light of the ever-growing bulk of archaeological material reflecting remnants of symbolic and ritualistic behaviour relating to trees. The project argues that we need to sidestep with our modern perception of the world if we wish to understand how trees might have been understood in a religious sense in the Old Nordic world.
