Messer1 Abstract Sixteen species are added to the checklist of Wisconsin Geadephaga. Of these, seven species are reported here as new to Wisconsin. Nine taxa from the list are affected by new information resulting in the removal of six names. The Eurasian beetle Harpalus rubripes was discovered as early as 2009 on annu- ally surveyed beaches along Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin. -

Messer1 Abstract A survey of Carabidae in the state of Wisconsin, U.S.A. yielded 87 species new to the state and incorporated 34 species previously reported from the state but that were not included in an earlier catalogue, bringing the total number of species to 489 in an annotated checklist. Collection data are provided in full for the 87 species new to Wisconsin but are limited to county occurrences for 187 rare species previously known in the state. Recent changes in nomenclature pertinent to the Wisconsin fauna are cited. ____________________ The Carabidae, commonly known as ‘ground beetles’, with 34, 275 described species worldwide is one of the three most species-rich families of extant beetles (Lorenz 2005). Ground beetles are often chosen for study because they are abun- dant in most terrestrial habitats, diverse, taxonomically well known, serve as sensitive bioindicators of habitat change, easy to capture, and morphologically pleasing to the collector. North America north of Mexico accounts for 2635 species which were listed with their geographic distributions (states and provinces) in the catalogue by Bousquet and Larochelle (1993). In Table 4 of the latter refer- ence, the state of Wisconsin was associated with 374 ground beetle species. That is more than the surrounding states of Iowa (327) and Minnesota (323), but less than states of Illinois (452) and Michigan (466). The total count for Minnesota was subsequently increased to 433 species (Gandhi et al. 2005). Wisconsin county distributions are known for 15 species of tiger beetles (subfamily Cicindelinae) (Brust 2003) with collection records documented for Tetracha virginica (Grimek 2009). -

Ober and Heider BMC Evolutionary Biology 2010, 10:262 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/10/262 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Phylogenetic diversification patterns and divergence times in ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Harpalinae) Karen A Ober1*, Thomas N Heider1,2 Abstract Background: Harpalinae is a species rich clade of carabid beetles with many unusual morphological forms and ecological interactions. How this diversity evolved has been difficult to reconstruct, perhaps because harpalines underwent a rapid burst of diversification early in their evolutionary history. Here we investigate the tempo of evolution in harpalines using molecular divergence dating techniques and explore the rates of lineage accumulation in harpalines and their sister group. Results: According to molecular divergence date estimates, harpalines originated in the mid Cretaceous but did not diversify extensively until the late Cretaceous or early Paleogene about 32 million years after their origin. In a relatively small window of time, harpalines underwent rapid speciation. Harpalines have a relative high net diversification rate and increased cladogenesis in some regions of the clade. We did not see a significant decrease in diversification rate through time in the MCCR test, but a model of diversification with two shift points to lower diversification rates fit the harpaline lineage accumulation through time the best. Conclusions: Our results indicate harpalines are significantly more diverse and have higher diversification than their sistergroup. Instead of an immediate burst of explosive diversification, harpalines may have had a long “fuse” before major lineages diversified during the early Paleogene when other taxa such as mammals, birds, and some flowering plants were also rapidly diversifying. -

Riverlake Drive Mequon, Wisconsin 53092 ABSTRACT One-hundred eighty-four species in 70 genera of geadephagan beetles (183 carabids and one rhysodid) were documented during a nine-year field survey of a national park site (George Washington Memorial Parkway) that spans parts of Fairfax and Arlington counties and the City of Alexandria in Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The capture of Elaphropus quadrisignatus (Duftschmid) represents the second record for the New World. Seven species, E. quadrisignatus, Harpalus rubripes (Duftschmid), Microlestes pusio (LeConte), Platynus opaculus LeConte, Pterostichus permundus (Say), P. sculptus LeConte, and Scarites vicinus Chaudoir are documented for the first time from the Commonwealth. Seven species, Anisodactylus dulcicollis (LaFerté-Sénectère), Elaphropus anceps (LeConte), E. saturatus (Casey), Oodes americanus Dejean, P. permundus, S. vicinus, and Tachys potomaca (Erwin) are documented for the first time from the District of Columbia. The study increases the number of geadephagan beetles known from the Potomac River Gorge to 255 species and the number from Virginia to 543 taxa. Hand picking and Malaise traps proved to be the most successful capture methods of the eight methods employed during the survey. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. -

Darlington, Jr., beginning with his early field trips there in 1934 and ending with his paper on tropical island carabids in 1970. The Lesser Antilles and Bahamas have had far less attention; most islands have not yet been sampled. The following tribes are recorded within the geographic area covered by the present study, which includes the Greater and Lesser Antilles, Bahamas, and most smaller islands not on the continental shelf: Carabini; Megacephalini; "Cicindelini; Enceladini; Pseudomorphini; Scaritini; "Clivinini; Ozaenini; Brachinini; 'Rhysodini; Trechini; Pogonini; "Bembidiini; Morionini; *Pterostichini; Panagaeini; Callistini; Oodini; Licinini; 'Harpalini; Ctenodactylini; Perigonini; Lachnophorini; Cyclosomini; Masoreini; Pentagonicini; Odacanthini; 'Lebiini; *Zuphiini; Galeritini. The Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) of Stillfork Swamp Nature Preserve, Carroll County, Ohio1 JOHN D. USIS AND DAVID B. One hundred and one species of Carabidae, including Bembidion incrematum LeConte, Pter- ostichus caribou Ball, Amara lunicollis Schi0dte, Stenolophus rotundatus LeConte, and Lebia tnoesta LeConte, new state records, representing 32 genera were identified from light trap collections operated during 1984 and 1986-1988 in the open wetland, and from barrier pitfall traps placed in an adjacent swamp oak—hawthorn forest in 1992. Most species are hygrophilous. Species richness was highest in Agonum and Bembidion. Pterostichus hamiltoni Horn, P. permundus (Say), Bembidion graciliforme Hayward were the most abundant species collected by pitfall traps and Stenolophus ochropezus (Say), Agonum tenue (LeConte) and Clivina impressefrons LeConte were the most abundant in light trap collections. Differences in the number and abundance of species collected by light traps and pitfalls suggest both methods be used to survey wetlands.
