An Intersectional Feminist Approach
GUIDING PRINCIPLE 1 AN INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST APPROACH An intersectional approach to feminism acknowledges that while women share similar experiences of discrimination, harassment, sexism, inequality and oppression on the basis of their sex and gender, not all women are equally disadvantaged or have equal access to resources, power and privilege. An intersectional approach to feminism requires analysis and action that is not only gendered, but considers how other forms of systemic oppression and discrimination – such as racism, homophobia, transphobia, biphobia or ableism – can intersect with and impact on women’s experiences of gender, inequality, discrimination, harassment, violence or abuse. In the context of addressing violence against women, an intersectional approach recognises that the way women experience gender and inequality can be different based on a range of other cultural, individual, historical, environmental or structural factors including (but not limited to) race, age, geographic location, sexual orientation, ability or class. This approach also recognises that the drivers, dynamics and impacts of violence women experience can be compounded and magnified by their experience of other forms of oppression and inequality, resulting in some groups of women experiencing higher rates and/or more severe forms of violence, or facing barriers to support and safety that other women do not experience. DVRCV stands in solidarity with and supports work that addresses other forms of discrimination and oppression. We actively promote and give voice to this work and support those leading it to consider gender in their approach, just as we consider how our work to address violence against women can challenge other forms of oppression that women experience. -

Dutton’s (2006) Rethinking Domestic Violence, are written and published in a specific political and economic context. As vividly described by Faludi (1991), Hammer (2002), and many others who made progressive contributions to an interdisciplinary understanding of the enduring discrimination against contemporary North American women, we still live in a climate characterized by vitriolic attacks on feminist scholarship, practice, and activism, intended to secure women’s basic human rights (DeKeseredy & Schwartz, 2003; Stanko, 2006). Despite its title, Dutton’s new book doesn’t focus on rethinking domestic violence. Instead, it is another example of the conservative backlash against feminism in general and feminist research on woman abuse in particular, a response that “helps to veil the extent and brutality of this problem and to block efforts to deal with it” (Hammer, 2002, p. 5). Dutton’s preoccupation with feminism is reflected in entire chapters dedicated to criticizing feminist theory and research, and the book’s “Bottom Line” summary, where half of the main points concern Dutton’s interpretation of feminism rather than new insights about domestic violence research. -

Misogyny versus Misandry: From “Comparative Suffering” to Inter-Sexual Dialogue Paul NathaNsoN aNd KatheriNe K. Y ouNg One reason for the current polarization between men and women—a situation that has become worse, not better, over the past two or three years—is the lack of any moral or philosophical paradigm for moving beyond polarization. The obstacle is a paradigm, comparative suffering, that leads inevitably toward the mobilization of resentment between various sexual, racial, ethnic, economic, religious or linguistic groups. From this deeply cynical perspective, groups compete in the public square for both moral status and political power by claiming that they alone deserve the status of collective victims and therefore that their adversaries alone deserve the stigma of collective victimizers. At the moment, men are experiencing this problem as acutely as women ever did but without the academic and political resources that feminism has generated during the past half century. Militarised masculinity in the Colombian armed conflict: gender attitudes and configurations of practice Signe Svallfors, Stockholm University Department of Sociology and Demography Unit WORK IN PROGRESS, DO NOT CITE OR CIRCULATE Abstract I explore a number of outcomes relating to the concept of militarised masculinity in Colombia, combing nationally representative data on individual women’s health and behaviour with regional historical data on armed conflict violence from 1998–2016. Militarised masculinity is operationalised both as attitudes towards gender equality and as configurations of practice. Using multiple department fixed effects linear probability models, the preliminary results show that conflict related positively to four different outcomes. The probability of emotional, less physical, as well as sexual intimate partner violence by men against women increased with more conflict violence. As did women’s tolerance towards violence against women. Conflict further related negatively to the probability of women taking part in decisions surrounding their health care, and the probability of women’s violence against their male intimate partners. Experiences of severe intimate partner violence and sexual violence perpetrated by others than the respondent’s partner did not associate to armed conflict. 1 Introduction Militarised masculinity conceptualises a shift in male gender norms, attitudes and behaviours towards the soldier as hegemonic within contexts of armed conflict (Goldstein, 2001; Rones & Fasting, 2017; Wadham, 2017). A growing body of research has analysed sexual violence in war (e.g. Cohen, 2013; Eriksson Baaz & Stern, 2009; M. L. Leiby, 2009; Muvumba Sellström, 2016; Solangon & Patel, 2012). But the gendered dynamics of war in the private sphere are less known and have scarcely been addressed quantitatively. -

Robison Road Texarkana, Texas 75501 Abstract The United Nations’ report on the State of the World Population 2000 (United Nations, 2000b) and studies conducted by the World Health Organization (2000a) and Amnesty International (2004) all indicate that violence against women is rampant in Africa and is increasing in some areas. The following study is an effort to highlight some of the reasons why violence against women is particularly problematic in African. The study reveals that violence against women in Africa is mainly due to the existence of discriminatory laws, prejudicial and harmful customs, traditions, beliefs and practices, and partly due to non-enforcement of gender-sensitive laws and constitutional provisions that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. Based on these findings the author argues that a review of such discriminatory laws, enforcement of existing legislations and constitutional provisions coupled with public awareness campaigns on the part of African governments to inform the public about the ills of certain customs, Violence Against Women Godpower Okereke. traditions, beliefs and practices will help stem the tide of violence against women in Africa. Antifeminism in New Nationalist Discourse 2020 AUTHORS Sophio Tskhvariashvili Shota Saghinadze The project was achieved with the support of the Women’s Fund in Georgia Georgian Young Greens 2020 Antifeminism in New Nationalist Discourse Problem description Antifeminism, as a political phenomenon, is reactionary and is often used as a tool for right-wing radicalization. Antifeminism is often associated with anti-queer sentiments since the main goal of feminist and queer activism is to eliminate the patriarchal social order and the social inequality it causes. In the Georgian context, we can identify the political actors who take this reac- tionary position and divide them into three research categories: 1) FAR-RIGHT (GEORGIAN MARCH, LEVAN VASADZE, ETC.) Their position on the above issues is direct and openly negative, which, in many cases, can also be a source of direct violence. These distinctly reactionary groups do not want to maintain a dominant quo status and seek to return to the mythologized "good old days" where a cis-hetero, Christian, ethnically Georgian man held an absolute dominant position. A necessary condition for the self-expression of their power is the subjugation of women and the destruction of "deviants". 2) "PROGRESSIVE" FORCES (GIRCHI, FREEDOM SOCIETY, ANTI-OCCUPATION MOVEMENT) In this case, we are dealing with politically relatively variable groups that fall into the range of those with nominally progressive values: libertarians, liberals, and liberals with nationalistic tendencies. They position themselves as advocates of women and queer rights, although their rhetoric often serves to downplay the importance of feminist and queer movements. The frequent disregard for the positions of queer and feminist activ- ists, and the rejection of systemic problems as a concept, only serves to reinforce the existing misogynistic and queerphobic background.
