BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 2 17/09/2020 11:20:58 From The Vicarage Dear Friends It is strange what you can discover unexpectedly! After an evening swim down at Bowleaze, we went into Weymouth harbour to see what was about. We fancied fish and chips, but seeing prices of £11.50 we thought again. There were many people about, sitting at distanced tables outside, and the atmosphere was continental and carefree. Unexpectedly we came upon the Hatch on the Harbourside, a sea-food street- food stall just in front of the Weyfish Fish Market. They were offering four local scallops as big as a monkey’s fist with salsa verde £8 and half lobster £12, and fresh oysters, all cooked or prepared before your eyes. You could not eat better or fresher anywhere in the world. It was sublime. What the fish company are doing is ‘adding value’. It is a challenge which faces all ‘primary producers’ such as farmers, fishermen and foresters. How do you avoid selling your produce on, for very little, to processors who then add substantial mark-ups and pocket the majority of the profit? The answer is to ‘add value’ by some form of presentation, preparation or development which raises the mark-up before you release the product. The same principle can be applied to our community lives. We live in a society where we often find belonging and status up for sale. Buy this car, or this house, these branded trainers, or this remarkable scent, and you will find love and importance. But community is ours, love is ours, importance is ours. We should not be content to give out attention, our regard, our loyalty away so cheaply. We should, as individuals, families and communities, seek to retain the ‘added value’ as near to home as we can. That is how we enrich our local lives, rather than giving all the value and power to Facebook, TikTok, Hollywood or whichever shrine at which you choose to worship. That is one of the reasons we call Christianity an ‘Incarnate’ religion. It teaches that real value is within you, that the Kingdom of Heaven is all around you, that the Spirit of God walks your hills and flows in your springs. So ‘add value’ to your existence and being where you are, with your neighbours, family and friends. It too can be unexpected, and it too can be sublime.

BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 4 17/09/2020 11:21:00 Cerne Abbas NEWS Cerne Abbas Coronavirus Support A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF CERNE ABBAS CORONAVIRUS SUPPORT A meeting in the village church was held on Thursday 19th March to address the requirement to co-ordinate the many volunteer groups which had sprung up as the nation went into lockdown. Its aim was two-fold: first, to reduce risk of the virus within the village and surrounding hamlets; second, to ensure the survival of the village store, three pubs, tea room and gift shop. We planned to run this for six months. Friends of St Mary’s A detailed analysis of the service provided is available in a report submitted to (CONTACT Richard Warren 341518, [email protected]) Dorset Council and is available on www.cernevalley.co.uk. However, in broad terms 1,600 hours of volunteer time supported a freephone and email service; 180 calls for assistance were received involving our volunteer force of 75 who either collected prescriptions, did local shopping or just lent a hand. None of these figures included the many individual acts of neighbourliness and kindness which these volunteers and others carried out directly. We also obtained £1,200 from the Dorset Community Fund to support the village school, the care home and individual grants to those suffering a lonely lockdown. With the exception of the care home, located on the fringe of Cerne Abbas, we have had no known cases of Covid-19 in the village and surrounding hamlets that CACS supported, and our shops and pubs have survived and all provided excellent carry-out meals to order. We will retain ownership of the freephone number until March 2021 and our volunteer force has agreed to remain available in the event of a local infection returning. We are extremely grateful to all those who have helped in this endeavour, in particular our volunteers over the past six months.Sir Jeremy Mackenzie, Chairman CAC Support.

The newcomers’ welcome party took place in Cerne Abbas on 4th September in the Vicarage garden thanks to Jonathan and Jane Still, within social distancing guidelines. Jane Tearle

Cerne Abbas Historical Society (CONTACT Gordon Bishop 341478, [email protected]) The next issue of the CAHS magazine, the Winter issue, will be published in December. We do not have the resources to continue publishing the magazine monthly so we decided from September onwards to publish it quarterly at the beginning of each season. We have also decided that, since the magazine has proved to be very popular, we will continue to publish it even after the pandemic has ended and we are able to recommence our usual meetings, talks and other activities. Despite the difficulties caused by Covid-19 in accessing archives, we have continued to carry out research about the Abbey. We have recently obtained a copy of a 50-year lease of the Abbey granted by Henry VIII in February 1540 (less than a year after its dissolution) to Philip Vanwylder, a Flemish lute player at the royal court. A copy of the lease, written in medieval Latin, is on our website,www. cerneabbashistory.org, together with a translation that we have obtained. It tells 7

There will be more about Philip Vanwylder, his successors and the lease in the Winter issue of the magazine. We have already arranged a full programme of meetings and talks for 2021, including many of those that had to be cancelled this year. We only hope that they will all be able to take place.

CERNE ABBAS MUSIC FESTIVAL Due to the pandemic we were unable to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Festival this year but we are delighted to let you know that the Gaudier Ensemble are planning be with us again in 2021 from 8th to 11th July. At this stage it is impossible to say what form the Festival will take, but we hope very much that it will be as close to the “old normal” as possible. VOLUNTEERING IN CERNE ABBAS If lockdown has left you yearning for something to do outdoors, there are excellent ways to get healthy exercise at the same time as helping the local community. The Squibb Garden and the watermeadows are two areas where volunteers are needed to keep them looking good for the benefit of our community and for wildlife. During lockdown our regular working parties have not been able to take place, but we have now started them again as it is easy to maintain social distancing. So if you would like to help with the work at either or both of these community spaces, please let Roy Burnham know. They take place as follows and are listed in What’s On at www. cernevalley.co.uk • Squibblers – first Thursday each month. Next one is 1st October at 10am. • Watermeadows – second Tuesday each month. Next one is 13th October at 2pm. We look forward to welcoming any new helpers.

BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 11 17/09/2020 11:21:02 COMMUNITY HOP BREWING DAY for those of you who missed it, this seasonal event is exactly as it suggests – brewing a beer using locally-sourced hops. Some of these have been cultivated in people’s gardens or allotments, some have been foraged from hedgerows and Paul Wyman has his own secret spot on a railway bank in Crossways that we shall never speak of! Hops from Cerne Abbas came courtesy of Richard Wilkins and Simon Barratt; Dorchester varieties were represented via our good friends at Copper Street Brewery; further south hops from Weymouth were grown at Bennett’s water gardens by James Bennett; from the North hedgerow hops from Zeales were foraged by Chris Hurford; the chaps from Thorncombe Sports and Social club were represented by Mike Curry with a bag of Fuggles; and last but not least Rupert Maber arrived with the entire bines from Limington just over the Somerset county line. The day starts with the hop collectors preparing the fruits of their labour. This involves harvesting the hop cone from the bine. Vic then performs the art of rub and sniff to ascertain at what point in the boil the hops should be added. As the brewery is tightly licensed with Covid-compliance legislation, this year each hop picker entered the one way system alone to add the hops to the boiling wort and give a ceremonial stir. At the time of writing, the beer has almost completed its fermentation. It will be available in the two village free house pubs and direct from the brewery in 5ltr, 10ltr and 20ltr bags in box or delivered to your door if you are shielding. We will also have a few hand-labelled bottles available in the Cerne Abbas Village Stores a few weeks later. Jodie and Vic would like to thank all their local patrons for supporting the fledgling business in these testing times. They would also like to reassure you it is “business as usual”. Will and Pam Best are committed to growing all the barley organically in Godmanstone and the brewery is always striving to brew the best beer it can and collect a few awards along the way. Stay Safe! Cheers, Vic and Jodie Main picture: Jane Tearle. Inset: Vic Irvine Inset: Main picture: Jane Tearle.

AnnaBDesigns.indd 1 04/06/2018 14:49:52 Cerne Valley NEWS Cerne Valley Parish Council (CONTACT Wayne Lewin, Clerk, 07419 136735, [email protected]) Following NALC and government guidance, the Parish Council met virtually in September. This will continue until at least March 2021. The zoom link will be sent out via the website and Facebook. Councillors will soon be canvassing all of you on what parishioners want for your villages that is within the power of the Parish Council. It is entirely plausible that both the public toilets and the school playing field on Duck Street will be offered to the Parish Council. Both come with financial commitments of course, which will be raised via the Precept element of your Council Tax. Is this something you would want? Councillors also discussed how best to spend Community Infrastructure Levy Monies (CIL) . Ideas included connecting Cerne Abbas to the Giant’s View car park via a footpath and expanding the facilities in the play park. Have you any ideas on how to enhance the villages? The sum total is in the region of £11K. In other matters, the burial ground has been given a good tidy up. The Parish Council has approached the landowner asking if the land to south of the burial ground near Simsay is available for purchase. There are no issues in the allotments; the tree that came down in the car park has been removed; and new swings ordered for the play park. OUR NEXT MEETING is virtually on Thursday 8th October. Cerne Abbas Surgery (APPOINTMENTS 341666) FLU CLINICS – IMPORTANT INFORMATION We are having to adapt our usual arrangements for flu clinics to ensure the safety of our patients and staff. If you are eligible for a flu vaccination you must book an appointment. We are holding four flu clinics this year: • Tuesday 13th October at Cerne Abbas Village Hall; • Monday 19th October at The Green Man, King’s Stag (Note: this venue does not have disabled access); • Wednesday 28th October at Piddle Valley School, Piddletrenthide; and • Saturday 31st October at Cerne Abbas Village Hall. You MUST pre-book an appointment to attend one of the clinics. Booking should be done on-line, or if you have no internet access, by phoning reception. Pleasedo not attend if you do not have an appointment as we willnot be able to see you. When you attend for your flu vaccination, please: • Arrive at your appointment time; • Attend on your own if possible; • Wear a face covering; • Wear appropriate clothing so that the top of your arm (just below your shoulder) is easily accessible; and • do not attend if you are showing any signs of Covid-19, or have had a positive Covid test in the past 14 days. 16

BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 16 17/09/2020 11:21:05 We will have volunteers directing cars and advising patients when they can enter the clinic, please treat them with respect: they are an important part of the team and will help everyone to be seen safely and in good time. We will not be undertaking pulse checks at this year’s clinic, nor will we be able to deal with any other issues on the day. Please phone for an appointment at the surgery if you would like to discuss any other health concerns. We are not able to offer flu vaccines to patients aged 50-64 who are not in an ‘at risk’ category until we receive further guidance from the government. We will contact you later in the year if you become eligible for a vaccination. For more information, please visit our Surgery website,www.cerneabbassurgery. co.uk. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The Patient Participation Group (PPG) at Cerne Abbas surgery is looking for volunteer marshals to help at the following flu vaccination clinics this year: • Tuesday October 13th at Cerne Abbas Village Hall; • Wednesday October 28th at Piddle Valley First School; • Saturday October 31st at Cerne Abbas Village Hall. Volunteers will be part of the surgery team to support the safe and efficient management of the sessions. You will be working mostly outside and will be provided with PPE and covered by the surgery’s insurance. For further information, or to register an interest in volunteering for any of these dates and venues, please contact June and Eugene Balbinski, preferably by email to [email protected] or phone (341714) as soon as possible. Note that unfortunately we are unable to accept volunteers who have been ‘shielding’ or are similarly vulnerable. QUIT SMOKING WITH STOPTOBER! Stoptober is back for October 2020. And with the year we have had there’s never been a better time to quit smoking! Did you know that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you’re five times more likely to quit for good? If you are thinking about quitting smoking this October but are not sure what steps to take, we encourage you to speak with LiveWell Dorset. Through its telephone coaching and stop-smoke packs delivered to your door, LiveWell Dorset will help you to start stopping. Please visit www.livewelldorset.co.uk or call 0800 840 1628 for more details. Cerne Abbas CE VC First School (CONTACT [email protected] or 341319) We are delighted to tell you that the Cerne Valley Young People Trust have given us a grant to erect a building on the school grounds for the use of the pre-school children. The site for the building is behind the current Giant Classroom and so can be used for all of our Foundation Stage Early Year children. The work on site started during the latter part of August and we are very excited to see how this is progressing. We hope to be able to move in at October half term. The school would like to say a massive thank you to the Cerne Valley Young People 17

BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 17 17/09/2020 11:21:06 Trust without whose contribution we would not have been able to do this. We would also like to thank everyone who has put in a huge amount of time and effort in enabling this project to go ahead. This includes the Business Manager Alex Ryan and the builder Martin Curley. We would also like to thank Wrixon’s for the electrics, Steve Bull for the plumbing, Chris Hazeldine (ground works) and Retired Brigadier Alister Davis who has volunteered his help. With such difficult access to the site, a massive thank you goes to Jo Wood for allowing access through her garden without which we would not have been able to organise the foundations. When the structure is ready we have the next exciting job of furnishing it. We would really like this to be a community-led initiative as we intend the building to be used by the community as well as our children. We would like to make a plea and ask if anyone would be prepared to donate some money towards painting, decorating and furnishing this building. Mrs Mann loved attending events with our children when she was alive and we are sure she would be pleased that her money is going towards a venture that will not only help to sustain our school’s future, but will be able to be used for community-led events for the children of Cerne Abbas village. If you feel that you can either donate your time, skills or money in helping complete this building, we would be most grateful. Please do get in touch with the school office on341319 and we look forward to embedding our school even more deeply into our wonderful village.

Cerne Valley Cricket Club (CONTACT Philip Spray 341603, [email protected]) The local 2020 cricket season has now come and gone and it provided a much- needed morale booster for the numerous players of all ages. The Saturday league team had several close matches without obtaining a win. The Village team nearly upset the CVCC Friendly eleven (below) until a last- over misunderstanding of the laws allowed the winning run to be taken off the penultimate ball. On Saturday mornings, a splendid average of 21 players, aged 9-13 ,attended each week and girls formed over one- third of the number. There was also a very successful parent- child game which produced Jane Tearle some healthy sibling and parent/ child rivalry. 100-CLUB Winners of the August 100 Club draw were Kim Roebuck, Primrose Pile and Pamela Hunt and the September winners were Finby Champion, Roger Pile and Roy Burnham. 18

As Dave said on the close of his one-man show, the arts have been hit hard by lock-down. It was an honour to be able to show our support. Thank you all.

Short Mat Bowls (CONTACT Eugene and June Balbinski 341714, [email protected]) The government has now agreed with the English Short Mat Bowling Association that short mat bowls can restart providing certain conditions are satisfied. Clubs first need to achieve “Safe status” by having their Covid-19 procedures and club and venue risk assessments vetted and accepted as compliant. However, various Godmanstone Village Hall restrictions will apply including limiting the number of players per mat, the (BOOKINGS John Sinnamon 341908, [email protected]) duration to one hour and excluding spectators. The Cerne Abbas Club has decided to apply for “Safe Status”. A first pass at completing the required forms, etc, has been done but various other actions need completing too. The Club needs to devise some Covid-19 procedures and the Village Hall will need to clarify some questions and update its risk assessment. Whether the current rise in Covid-19 cases and the ‘Rule of Six’ will affect the timing of restarting bowls is difficult to know. However, if the Club has achieved “Safe Status” it will be ready when members wish to restart. NOW Cerne (CONTACT Marion Lee 341375, [email protected]) NOW is very unlikely to meet until the New Year. However, it has been lovely to hear your news for sharing within the group. Don’t hesitate to send photos, poems and any news to the email above. NOW, Network of Women, is an independent group created just over a year ago. If you are new to the area, feel free to send your email and join the group, which at present is free of charge. This way you could introduce yourself and get to hear about your new community. 19

AnnaBDesigns.indd 1 04/06/2018 14:49:52 Cerne Valley Young People Trust (CONTACT Helen Smith 341995) The Trustees are delighted to announce the award of a substantial grant to Cerne Abbas First School to build a new garden classroom to house its ‘Ducklings’ pre-school. No government funding was available and yet this additional space is vital to maintain the school’s viability and the school is such a key part of our community. This grant was only possible with the help of the legacy left to the Trust by Margaret Mann. She was a loyal supporter of the school and the young people of the village and it is fitting that the new building will be named ‘Miss Mann’s Garden Classroom’. The grant will cover the construction of the building with electrical and drainage services but the school still needs to decorate and furnish the classroom. The school is asking the community for contributions towards the cost of this additional work and if you would like to make a donation details can be found in the school’s article in this newsletter (see page 17). The CVYPT was set up in 2008 and its mandate is to help young people in Cerne Abbas and the surrounding villages, especially, but not exclusively, through leisure time activities, so as to develop their capabilities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society. The Trust’s remit includes the school and village youth organisations such as the scouts, cricket club and youth club. The current Trustees are John Charman, Moira Pinder, Mark Richardson and Helen Smith. Our treasurer is Marion Saunders.

Godmanstone NEWS Godmanstone church (CONTACT Churchwarden Diana Bladon 01305 757589) Godmanstone church has stood quietly all spring and summer with no services and hardly a visitor. However, it has not deteriorated in any way, nor has it developed any mustiness. After all, it can no doubt remember the Black Death of 1346, when it was already 200 years old! A short service for a handful of people was held on Saturday 12th September, but with the regulations tightening up and the current uncertainty, no future events can be planned as we go to press. It is of course available for small and strictly regulated weddings and funerals, and if anyone wants to visit they can, by ringing Pam or Will on 07967 827051 or 07966 298485. RIDE AND STRIDE Also on 12th September was “ride and stride”, when people did sponsored bike rides or walks around Dorset churches for the Dorset Historic Churches Trust. Several Godmanstone folk took part and, as half the proceeds go direct to the home parish, our Church will benefit by several hundred pounds, while the rest gives us Brownie points when we need a grant or loan from DHCT. Many thanks are due to those who biked, walked and sponsored. 21

The main body of the church is open on Sundays 10am to 5pm. Please use hand sanitiser and sign the register. Thank you. Jonathan is now back in the Benefice after his sojourn with the Royal Naval Reserve in Dartmouth. A table-top sale took place in Buckland Newton, to raise He made a most funds for the church loo. welcome return to Buckland Newton church on 12th September to lead a socially safe and adapted service of Holy Communion. The church looked lovely with sun streaming in through the stained glass windows and two beautiful flower arrangements in the church and in the porch. It was restorative and calming and a joy to listen to the familiar words of the service. There was singing of two hymns, slightly muffled through masks, but enjoyable nontheless. It is hoped more services will be held in due course, observing all safety rules. Please keep a look out for posters and for email information regarding dates. DATES IN OCTOBER Thursday 1st October, Harvest Moon; Sunday 11th October, Prison Sunday, preceeding a week of thought and prayer for all in prison and their families. Sunday 18th October, Healthcare Sunday, when we give grateful thanks to all who care for those in need. This has even more significance than ever this year in these difficult times. On Saturday 24th October, clocks go back one hour. October is a time to enjoy autumn colours, to take stock before the winter months, a bit like the hedgehogs we have been watching in our garden, coming each evening, to fatten up on suppers of mealworms, prior to hibernation. 25

BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 26 17/09/2020 11:21:11 Thanks, letters and other SNIPPETS THANKS FROM STUART DRAKE I would like to thank everyone in the village that sent cards and for all the love and support I have received following the death of my wife, Valerie, who died suddenly on 28th July. VALERIE APPLEBY Sue Moon, husband Paul and brother David Appleby, wish to thank everyone for the very many kind messages, thoughts and memories shared with us of Mum, Val, who passed away peacefully on 22nd August at 85 years old, after a lifetime’s struggle with ill-health and disability. We shall all miss her whizzing around Cerne Abbas, the surrounding villages and countryside, on her ‘Harley-Davidson style’ buggy. THE OBSERVANT (DOG) WALKER I have been putting off the thought of autumn and its inevitable approach! Where did summer go you may ask? The appearance of blackberries very early was a testing time but now with the fungi emerging- some gorgeous parasol mushrooms (pictured) on Black Hill; the oat harvest on Yelcombe safely gathered; some changes in the leaf colours and of course conkers dropping, makes me take it more seriously. The start of the football season, and how to cope with the crowds, reinforces the pleasure of being able to walk in the Cerne Valley alone or within Jane Tearle our smaller allowable groups of six. Many days during August saw lots of people in and around our valley, enjoying the paths and woodlands, open hills and river walks, as well as bringing support to our local businesses which was good to see. Valuing our corner of Dorset countryside is very important. Look after it and let it seep into your mind on your daily walk, with or without a dog! ‘Normality’, as we knew it is still a long way off. NEW ADS This edition sees the start of the new ‘advertising year’. Our thanks to all those who have continued with their advertisements and those newly in. The year will run until (and including) the September 2021 edition. To readers of this newsletter, we urge you to give these advertisers your support before looking further afield for the services they offer. There is still a little space left for advertising, so if you have a business you would like to promote to this Newsletter’s readers, then please contact Rupert [email protected] 27

BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 27 17/09/2020 11:21:11 ARE YOU A FEMALE Author and ENTREPRENEUR? or could Godmanstone you be? Godmanstone resident, John resident, author and Smythe. businessman John Smythe, has brought out a new book, Female Entrepreneurs – the Secrets of Their Success. In it he states that 91% of venture capital money funds businesses founded solely by men, and a tiny 1% goes to those solely funded by women. Yet, being a female entrepreneur is not the preserve of Wonder Woman, but for every woman who wants to make it happen! Certainly, the Cerne Valley and local villages can be proud that there are many women making their own way through innovative businesses. One such lady, Alex Beer, who with her brother Nick set up Feed the Soul vegan café in Godmanstone, is one of the 52 interviewees who provide the structure to John’s book. A number of other Dorset and nearby visionaries appear among the 52: Susie Watson (Susie Watson Design, Sherborne); Carolyn Hopkins of the (mobile) Truffle Truck; Sarah Ali Choudhury known as the ‘Asian curry queen’ of Easy Curry and the Taj Mahal in Bridport; Alice Johnson, life coach in Sherborne; Gabriella Sugg of The Ella-Phant Kitchen in Yeovil; and Emma Hill of Redefine Salon in Poundbury. This book is described as a ‘must have’ for any budding entrepreneur, encouraging those who are considering taking the plunge into a new direction, and providing wisdom, insights and practical advice. John and co-author Ruth Saunders have impressive credentials being entrepreneurs themselves and now advise start-ups on how to launch and scale up for growth. John explains the book’s purpose as: “To inspire wannabe entrepreneurs of all ages and life stages to take the entrepreneurial leap. Particularly women, but also men.” John is generously offering the book to readers of this newsletter at the ‘at cost’ price of £20 (normally £29.99), email [email protected] TRADING STANDARDS: THE GOLD STANDARD The hallmarking of gold and silver dates back to 1300 when King Edward I introduced it to protect standards and to prevent craftsmen committing fraud when making jewellery. The first stamp was a leopard’s head which symbolised the King’s mark of authentication. The word ‘hallmark’ didn’t come into use until the 15th century when craftsmen took their artefacts to Goldsmiths’ Hall in to be assayed. Today there are four assay offices in operation, in London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Sheffield. Hallmarking techniques and regulations have been fine-tuned since those early days. The current legislation that governs hallmarking has been effective since the creation of the 1973 Hallmarking Act which is enforced by trading standards officers.

BeneficeNewsOct20.indd 29 17/09/2020 11:21:12 If a jeweller makes items of silver, gold, platinum or palladium and wants to sell them they are obliged to get them assayed which guarantees they are good quality. The hallmark is then applied so it can legally be put onto the market. A 2019 report confirmed that up to a third of precious metal products supplied online are unhallmarked and could therefore be fake. Jewellery fraud has consistently been an issue in the precious metal industry where counterfeit items can be made and sold to the unsuspecting customer at a high price. Fake jewellery affects the reputation of legitimate businesses and hurts the industry as a whole and without hallmarking enforcement many customers and legitimate businesses are exposed to fraud. If you believe you may have purchased counterfeit jewellery, report it to Dorset Council Trading Standards by visiting the Citizens Advice Consumer Service at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer or by calling the service’s new freephone number 0808 223 1133. GREEN ENERGY GRANTS AND SCAMS A government Green Homes Grant for homeowners in is available from the end of September 2020 and runs until the end of January 2021. It aims to help pay for certain energy efficient home improvements including insulation. All homeowners can apply for funding for at least two thirds of the cost of eligible home improvements, up to a total value of £5,000. Some homeowners will qualify for the total cost of eligible home improvements, costing up to £10,000. You must install either insulation, or low-carbon heating, of certain types to qualify. Funding is by government voucher and, to start with, you need to make sure you are eligible for the scheme. Full details of the Green Homes Grant can be found at the government-endorsed web page www.simpleenergyadvice.org.uk/ or by phoning 0800 444202. History has shown that unscrupulous traders may try to take advantage of schemes such as this, perhaps contacting people by phone, or on the doorstep, out of the blue, with the offer of discounted insulation or building work. Sometimes the sales talk may refer to previous work completed at the property. Traders may try to push the need for urgency as a selling point, the official scheme being a time limited offer. The advice from trading standards is to visit the Simple Energy Advice webpage, or phone them on the number above, before you agree to any work starting so you know whether you are eligible for the grant and what that entitles you to. If you are unsure whether an approach by a trader is genuine, perhaps ask for the help of a trusted relation, friend or neighbour. If you believe you have been contacted by, or have had work completed by, a trader who is not what they first seemed, then please report them to Dorset Council Trading Standards by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Service at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer or by calling the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on freephone 0808 223 1133. 30
