Jesus had said he would rise from the dead by the third day. But today is the third day!”

The Road to Emmaus

One day, not long after Jesus had been crucified, two men were walking down the road towards a village called Emmaus. They had been followers of Jesus.

Emmaus was about seven miles away from Jerusalem.

While they walked, they were discussing all the things that had happened in the last few days.

They were talking about Jesus sharing the Last Supper at Passover and how he had been arrested and then been put to death. This had greatly upset Jesus’ followers.

Jesus’ body had been laid in a tomb, like a cave, and a huge stone was rolled in front of the entrance. The two men were confused why, today, Jesus’ body had vanished from the tomb. The two friends just could not understand what was going on!

While they walked, another traveller joined them. It was Jesus, though the two men did not recognise him.

Jesus asked them, “What are you talking about, as you walk along?”

One of the men, who was called , said, “Are you the only one around here who does not know what has been happening here in the last few days?”

“What has been going on?” asked Jesus.

“Jesus of Nazareth,” the other man answered. “He was a prophet, and everything he said and did was wonderful. The chief priests didn’t like him because he said things against their beliefs. Many people liked what Jesus was saying. So, the chief priests arranged to get Jesus arrested! He was crucified for nothing. Jesus had said he would rise by the third day. But today is the third day!”

The men continued to explain.

Jesus carried on talking to the two men on their journey. Still they did not know who Jesus was.

When the men reached the village, the men said, “It is nearly night. Stay with us.” Jesus agreed.

Later, when they were about to eat, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and broke it. This was something they remembered Jesus doing, and at last, they recognised him!

Jesus disappeared.

They were delighted when they recognised who he was and said, “We knew we felt different while he told us what everything had meant!”

Immediately, they set off back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples.

“It is true! The Lord has risen and appeared to us!”

Then, they told the others everything that had happened, and explained when Jesus had broken the bread, they had recognised him.

Two of Jesus’ followers were walking down the road towards a village called Emmaus. It was about seven miles away from Jerusalem.

While they walked, they were discussing all the things that had happened in the last few days.

They were talking about Jesus when he broke the bread at the Last Supper at Passover and how he had been arrested and crucified. This had distressed all of Jesus’ followers a great deal.

Jesus’ body had been placed in a tomb, with a huge stone rolled in front of the entrance. They were bewildered as to why, today, his body had disappeared from the tomb. So much had happened, that the two friends just could not understand what it was all for.

They were joined by another traveller, walking towards Emmaus too. It was Jesus, although the two men did not recognise him.

Jesus asked them, “What are you talking about, as you walk along this long road?”

They looked very miserable as one of the men, called Cleopas, replied, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in recent days?”

“What things?” asked Jesus.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, and powerful in what he said and did. The chief priests and our rulers were threatened by him because people knew that what he told them, made a lot of sense. So, the chief priests and teachers of the law handed Jesus over to the authorities, and he was crucified. He said he would rise by the third day. But today is the third day!”

The men continued to explain.

Page 1 of 4 The Road to Emmaus

“Then our women amazed us. They went to the tomb and said his body had disappeared. Apparently, they had seen angels who had said he was alive! Our friends went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said it was, but they did not see Jesus anywhere”.

Jesus said to them, “How foolish you have been! How slow to believe everything the prophets have said! The Saviour had to suffer all that and then people could see his glory!”

With that, Jesus then went on to tell the two men everything the prophets had said would happen involving himself.

When the men reached the village, Jesus was going to continue on his journey, but the men said, “It is nearly night. Stay with us.” Jesus agreed.

Later, when they were about to eat, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks and broke it. Suddenly, they recognised him!

He disappeared from their sight.

They realised who he was and said, “Did our hearts not burn within us while he told us what it had all meant?”

They realised that talking to him had affected them. Immediately, they set off back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples.

“It is true! The Lord has risen and appeared to us!”

Then, they told the others everything that had happened, and explained when Jesus had broken the bread, they had truly recognised him.
