Holden Environmental Scientist I Barbara Goetting Environmental Specialist I Thomas Dix Environmental Scientist II MARCH 2003 1 Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County Richard Garrity, Ph.D. Executive Director Gerold Morrison, Ph.D. Director, Environmental Resources Management Division 2 INTRODUCTION The Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC) has been collecting samples in Middle Tampa Bay 1993 as part of the bay-wide benthic monitoring program developed to (Tampa Bay National Estuary Program 1996). The original objectives of this program were to discern the ―health‖—or ―status‖-- of the bay’s sediments by developing a Benthic Index for Tampa Bay as well as evaluating sediment quality by means of Sediment Quality Assessment Guidelines (SQAGs). The Tampa Bay Estuary Program provided partial support for this monitoring. This report summarizes data collected during 1993-1998 from the Middle Tampa Bay segment of Tampa Bay. 3 METHODS Field Collection and Laboratory Procedures: A total of 127 stations (20 to 24 per year) were sampled during late summer/early fall ―Index Period‖ 1993-1998 (Appendix A). Sample locations were randomly selected from computer- generated coordinates. Benthic samples were collected using a Young grab sampler following the field protocols outlined in Courtney et al. (1993). Laboratory procedures followed the protocols set forth in Courtney et al. (1995). Data Analysis: Species richness, Shannon-Wiener diversity, and Evenness were calculated using PISCES Conservation Ltd.’s (2001) ―Species Diversity and Richness II‖ software. -

Introduction This is an index of the contents of each of the 60 card packs which make up Sally Kaicher's Card Catalogue. It is designed to allow those attempting to collect entire sets to monitor their progress. An alphabetical index of the Catalogue by species name is already available on the same website as this one. Notes - Cards are listed here in numerical order, with the packs ordered as originally published; where the original author's number modifications are available, these have been adopted. In order to use this index as efficiently as possible, owners of cards are recommended to store them by pack, in numerical order. In order not to preempt any of the revisions of the Card Catalogue currently in preparation, no attempt has been made to correct spellings (even where there are clearly typographical errors) or to revise classification. Kaicher's own subsequent modifications to generic placement are similarly not incorporated here. - In the case of 'replacement' cards, Kaicher gave the card a series number as well as the number of the card it was to replace. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF BENTHIC MOLLUSCS ALONG A DEPTH GRADIENT IN THE BAHAMAS Michael Joseph Dowgiallo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Marjorie L. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range. -

Aceptado el 24-I-2005 ABSTRACT Volvarina ryalli sp. nov. is described from the northern subequatorial zone of West Africa, ranging from western Liberia to central Ghana, at lower infralittoral and upper circalittoral levels. Volvarina ryalli is compared with the V. ambigua (Bavay, 1913) / V. deliciosa (Bavay, 1913) complex from off northwest Africa and with V. angolensis (Odhner, 1923) from southern Angola. RESUMEN Se describe Volvarina ryalli spec. nov. del norte de la zona subecuatorial de Africa occi - dental, cuya área de distribución va desde el oeste de Liberia a la parte central de Ghana, y que se encuentra desde niveles infralitorales bajos hasta circalitorales altos. Volvarina ryalli se compara con el complejo V. ambigua (Bavay, 1913) / V. deliciosa (Bavay, 1913) de la zona noroccidental de Africa y con V. angolensis (Odhner, 1923) del sur de Angola. July - August, 2015_____________________________________________________________Volume 56 No. 4 Programs There will be no Jacksonville Shell Club (JSC) meeting this July. We hope members will be out in the field collecting and enjoying themselves in the long summer days. Let's gather some "Marine Observations" and share them at the August meeting. On Thursday, August 27, the JSC will convene at the usual time (7:00 PM) and place (Southeast Branch, Jacksonville Public Library <http://jpl.coj.net/lib/branches/se.html>). The shell-of-the-month will be presented by Harry Lee. His choice will be made at the annual Conchologists of America (COA) convention in Weston, FL (July 12-18). It will be the most spectacular shell he observes at the scientific programs, oral and silent auctions, bourse, on the field trips, and in more impromptu encounters. Rick Edwards, who is also planning to attend, will do the photography. The main program will be given by Charlotte Thorpe, who is fresh back from a diving expedition to the Dominican Republic. Likely there'll be several living mollusks caught in natural poses by Char's well-honed underwater photographic skills. President’s Message Dear JSC Members, There is not much activity to mention for the club over the next couple of months, we are currently cruising in idle mode. Summer is upon us and for all of us currently living in Florida, the past few days have already brought on that incredibly warm and humid feeling. With that said, I am dreaming of shelling on the beach for some marine snails on a warm sunny day, shelling in the bush for some land snails after a good rain, or cruising down a nice cool river or creek with my snorkeling gear looking for some aquatics! I'd probably enjoy self propelling a jet back through the breeze, but it seems there have been no flying snails discovered as of yet, so I'll pass on that adventure for the time being. -

NORTHWEST FLORIDA SPECIES LIST This list, which contains shells found in the onshore and offshore waters of the Florida Panhandle, was prepared by the members of the Gulf Coast Shell Club. The list is arranged alphabetically by family. The numbers to the left of the shell name refer to the corresponding species as found in American Seashells, Second Edition by Dr R. Tucker Abbott. An asterisk indicates that a name change to the family, species, genus, (or all) has occurred since publication. Shells annotated with a superscript 1 indicate form names that may or may not be valid but are useful for identification. Shells annotated with a superscript 2 are shells from the 1994 Keeler and Robertson survey of the Apalachicola Marine Estuary and immediate offshore areas and represent species not currently held by GCSC members but that are deemed native to our area. Common name for the shell and its normal adult size range columns are included. There are 635 shells (including forms) on this list as of the latest update in March, 2013. Our thanks go to Dr. Harry Lee of the Jacksonville Shell Club for his assistance in this compilation. A caution: Any list of this type is subject to frequent name changes as the science involved progresses. The Family Marginellidae Fleming 1828 in the Miocene (Tortonian) of South Piedmont (Italy), with the Description of Three New Species

MAURO BRUNETTI & BRUNO DELL’ANGELO Abstract This study is based on specimens of the family Marginellidae FLEMING 1828 from the Mio- cene (Tortonian) of South Piedmont sites in the surroundings of Stazzano (Alessandria): Rio di Bocca d’Asino, S. Agata Fossili and Castellania. Seven species are here reported, three of which described as new (Dentimargo elusiva, Eratoidea antoniae, and “Marginella” giuntellii), three already known [Stazzania marginata (MICHELOTTI 1847), Volvarina oblongata (SACCO 1890), and Marginella deshayesi MICHELOTTI 1847] and one identified only at generic level Volvarina( sp.). The distribution of the genus Dentimargo is extended to the Miocene (Tortonian) of Italy. Dentimargo has a wider distribution, and was already known from the Eocene of France and the Pliocene of Spain. Eratoidea antoniae is compared with the syntype of E. eratoformis (HOERNES & AUINGER 1880) and with specimens of E. cf. eratoformis from the Pliocene of Estepona (Spain), here figured.
