Phrasing and Structure is one of the most important elements of Lead Guitar Playing. In fact, it’s how you’ll create your own style and signature. Even though it’s one of the most important elements, it still requires several additional elements of lead guitar playing to be very strong as well to support great musical phrasing and structure.

When all of these important elements are used together, they ultimately help develop the critical phrasing and structure techniques within your lead playing.

Phrasing and structure is used very much like the human language, in that, it's your musical language, used in a very similar way.

I see many of my guitar students get their “ah ha” moment after understanding this concept. I hope to do the same for you as well. Let’s Rock!

What is the importance of musical phrasing and structure?

It’s one of the most important elements of music in general, in regards to any instrument being played, including drums and percussion. It’s how you speak to your listener.

There is a degree of intelligence that goes along with the musical language, and can be improved upon as you get better.

Picture a well-spoken public speaker speaking to an audience, compared to a person that has a limited speech vocabulary, which has rarely spoken to an audience. You get the idea…

There’s going to be a quality difference in the delivery between them.

1. Speaking The Musical Language: This is something that requires you to think your thoughts all the way through. Whether long or short, try to complete the thought as a musical phrase.

Create tension, go through a couple peaks and valleys, and then resolve it. This can be done with very few notes.

In fact, you should practice this technique with very few notes… Then build upon the phrase. Adding several phrases together will create a structure. The structure is the big picture built with clever phrasing.

2. Question and Answer Method: Within the simplest form of a “question and answer” method, it requires a quick tension build up, then a quick release of the tension.

Example: In the key of (A) – Play a three or four note lick, and end the lick on any note other than the (A) note… Then immediately play another three or four note lick and DO end on the (A) note. This is the question and answer method in its simplest form. When you learn this simple technique, you’ll find that the musical question can become more specific and elaborate, and the answer can be more detailed and thorough.

3. Create a Story: Your goal is to create a beginning, middle and an end. This can be easier said than done, but if you picture creating a longer beginning, longer middle, and a longer end, you’ll start to see that it builds slower and more cohesive.

This is where you’ll begin using a series of phrases to create a bigger picture. Think of having a conversation with your audience. You’re telling them a story, and you get more involved with the story as you tell it.

Now you'll begin adding more details to the story, which makes the story more interesting to the listener.

4. Expand Your Story Into a Musical Conversation: To reach this level, you’ll need to be comfortable enough with the previous elements, to start being able to play what you hear in your head.

As i mentioned earlier, this is very much like having an interesting conversation with a person. In that, if what you are saying is interesting, or being told in a captivating way, it holds your attention and you listen.

The same thing is true with the musical language. You want to use multiple quality phrases, and mini structures, as tools for free flowing creativity. When you're able to start playing the things you hear in your head, your range of musical vocabulary and creativity with skyrocket.

I honestly feel that when a reaches this point in his career, it’s like breathing new life into them as musicians. You're now becoming a mature musician… (Seasoned musician), as the industry says.

Just like teenagers... most of them think they know it all and mom and dad can't tell them anything they don't already know... Then, as they get a little older they realize, wow, they didn't really know much at all at that age. That's when they start becoming mature and really learning.

This is very true for as well. After playing for several years, they begin to think they've got a grip on everything that makes a great guitarist what they are. Then... of course, as years go on they begin realizing they don't understand nearly as much as they thought.

That's when they really start learning and becoming the seasoned musician they've always wanted to be.

String Bending is a very important element of Lead Guitar Playing. It’s another part of what helps develop your style and signature as a Lead Guitarist. Many guitar players do not spend the time that is needed on this element of their playing. Therefore, end up spending many more years trying to figure out why their playing doesn’t sound as good, or... stand out from all the other players. When you become hyper aware of this all important “secret”, your lead guitar playing will certainly begin to skyrocket from where it's at now.

What is the importance of Lead Guitar String Bending? String Bending is a major contributor to your overall style. When you use string bending as a tool within your guitar playing, the one thing you'll have to master is... determining where your whole step and half step notes are from the note you’re currently on. This is a must!

Now, it does require your ear to be trained, but, because you are now aware of this critical element you’ll quickly jump ahead of the learning curve.

As long as you know what you’re listening for, and then consistently practice it, your ear will become trained automatically!

This is a precision skill you’ll use throughout your entire musical career. It will help you in every aspect of musicianship from this point forward.

1. Whole Step Bending Upward: As a rule of thumb, you should use the High E, B, & G strings as notes to be bent upward.

The reason being, if you bent the High E, and B string downward they would tend to pull off the side of neck.

The best way to practice this technique is to simply pick a note, and practice bending from that position, to a whole step higher. The goal is to nail the pitch every time. You’ll want to stay in this position until you've got complete control over that particular whole step bend.

EXAMPLE: If I wanted to practice bending the G string on the 7th fret upwards a whole step, it should sound exactly like the G string sounds on the 9th fret without being bent. Test these notes until they match.

2. Half Step Bending Upward: The same thing applies here. Only difference, you're going to be bending a half step upward.

Now, this is a bit easier said than done. You'll really need to focus on the pitches between a whole step and a half step. This can be confusing if you don’t practice properly.

You should practice each of these bends separately for a length of time, before you begin practicing them together. This will allow your ear a chance to get use to the differences in pitch.

It’s VERY important that you can determine exactly where a whole step away from the root note is, and a half step away from the root note is at all times. This is critical, and will improve your overall musicianship.

3. Whole Step Bending Downward: You should use the Low E, A, & D strings as strings to be bent downward.

Again, the main reason is if you bent them upward they would tend to stretch off the neck.

The best way to practice this technique is to pick a note, and practice bending from that position, a whole step higher.

You're goal is to nail the pitch every time. Stay in this position only, until you have got complete control over the particular whole step bend.

EXAMPLE: If I wanted to practice bending the A string on the 3rd fret downward a whole step, it should sound exactly like the A string sounds on the 5th fret without being bent.

4. Half Step Bending Downward: The same things applies here as the whole step exercise, except you're only going to be bending a half step downward.

As i said previously, it’s easier said than done and can be confusing. However, if you practice correctly you'll be just fine.

Be sure to practice each of these bends separately, for a length of time before you begin practicing them together. This will allow your ear a chance to get use to the differences in pitch. It’s very important that you can determine exactly where a whole step is away from the root note, and where a half step away from the root note is at all times. One more important factor to remember when bending your strings...

You definitely want to use all four fingers when practicing your bends. If you don't, you’re cheating yourself out of tons of great licks and phrases that you could be playing.

Make sure you practice upward and downward with your index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers. They should all have the same strength for bends.

You’ll find that many guitarists don’t do this, and it will quickly give you an advantage within your ability to create unique phrases and licks.

String Vibrato is a huge factor when it comes to Lead Guitar Success. It’s another one that that really defines your style and signature as a lead guitarist.

If you’ve never really analyzed other guitar players vibrato, you definitely should. It's a technique that can easy be overlooked. However, properly used vibrato is a high impact technique that separates the pro’s from the amateurs.

Here’s something to do now… Take three of your favorite guitarists and listen only to their vibrato. Listen to where they put it, how often they use it, and what style of vibrato they use. Analyze this closely and you’ll be surprised at how much you may have been missing.

What is the importance of Lead Guitar String Vibrato? String Vibrato is a major contributor to your overall style. When you use string bending as a tool within your guitar playing, you're actually speaking to your audience in a way that only you can do.

It is your personal signature!

You can listen to five people tell the same story, but all five of those stories will ultimately have a different overall effect on the listener. One person can make the story exciting by using powerful words with enthusiasm etc... while another person can make it extremely boring with no enthusiasm. The same thing is true for your string bending.

What are some different styles of vibrato typically used? There are several types of vibrato styles that you commonly hear in guitar playing. I'm going to cover 3 of the most used styles, and show you a couple of things to keep in mind when using these.

1. Wide Style Vibrato: When using a wide vibrato, the challenge is to bend the note at least one whole step away from the natural position root note being bent.

There are occasions where you would bend notes a step and a half away, but it depends what note you’re bending within the scale and the rhythm structure being used.

The reason, if bending notes a step and a half away isn’t in key with your scale or rhythm then you certainly would not want to bend it that wide.

So you do need to specifically choose the areas for extra wide style vibrato. The same holds true for all of your bends, in that you should bend accordingly to what the note intervals are for the specific scale you’re using.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you are going back and forth from your vibrato spots as accurately as possible. Be careful not to overshoot your whole steps. The more accurate you are in controlling your vibrato, the more professional your overall sound will be as a lead guitarist in general.

2. Narrow Style Vibrato: When using a narrow style vibrato, you’ll want to try and work within half step intervals.

This means that the areas within a scale that are within a half step from each other will work nicely with a narrow style vibrato. This is because your pivoting back and forth between to relevant notes within a scale.

I hope this is becoming clear and starting to make sense. Where to bend a whole step away, and a where to bend a half step away, is determined by the scale or rhythm structure being played at that time.

3. Natural Position Vibrato: Unlike the wide style and the narrow style, the natural position vibrato can be used anywhere on the neck, within any scale, within any rhythm structure… WHY?

It's because the natural position vibrato doesn’t take the note away from it’s original pitch. Your job is to add slight vibrato to the natural note being played. This allows you to stop on any note at any time to add a bit of vibrato.

Your goal is to try and make it sing like a vocalist.

4. How To Practice Vibrato: One of the most important ways to practice your vibrato is to strike the desired note and hold the note in the exact pitch for a couple seconds, and then begin to add in the vibrato. It's the same method vocalists use with their voice.

This means if you’re using a wide style, then bend the note up a whole step and then slowly bring in the wide style vibrato.

The same it true for the half step and natural styles.

Bend the note a half step up and lock in the pitch, then add your narrow style vibrato.

Your natural bend would just be played in a natural position while slightly pulling the note away from the natural pitch.

By now, you should be feeling much more confident about your vibrato styles and how to approach them within your lead guitar playing.

Alternate Picking and Rolls are tools that you DO want to have complete control over within your Lead Guitar Playing.

I like to view this as the throttle controlling a fine-tuned engine. You won’t always have it cracked wide open, but when you need the power it’s there.

Use your speed sparingly for maximum results. Using your speed sparingly or “holding back” is one of the hardest things to implement within your guitar playing, especially for beginners to intermediate players. Why, because it's human nature, and it's fun!

What's Important about Alternate Picking and Legato Rolls? The definition of your sound when playing fast or slow, is developed by your command over alternate picking and legato rolls.

You definitely want to spend time working with these two techniques.

The reason, it’s your main tool to explore the fretboard, and lack of development in this area can make it an obstacle holding you back from “un-restricted” lead guitar playing.

If you listen to , Paul Gilbert, or Yngwie Malmsteen, you get a clear idea of what this is all about in it’s perfected state. Your goal is to use these techniques in the most affective way.

My personal opinion is that Edward Van Halen does this the best!

How should you practice your alternate picking and legato patterns?

1. Up-stroke and Down-stroke Synchronization: This is the difference between all cylinders firing on a finely tuned engine, or a fowled plug engine that ‘s missing…

Seriously, this is your mechanical horsepower and needs to be harnessed to the fullest. Every musical phrase, lick, pattern, scale, run, etc… is all based on how well your up and down strokes are in sync.

2. Emphasizing The Up-Stroke: Picking the upstroke with added emphasis (while crossing strings) will do two things for you. First, it gives you better stability and fluidity, but even more, it allows you a great sense of timing if you use the upstroke as a “time stamp” within your counting. It can help give you a better sense of where “one ” is within a lengthy solo run, or series of phrases.

3. Smoothing Out Legato Patterns: When using legato patterns and runs, try and hammer your rolling notes as clean, steady, and consistent as possible. It’s easy to get ahead of yourself when rolling notes together. This includes speed, volume, and attack.

Example: Notice when you’re playing three note per string legato runs that some points seem to be a bit faster than others, or maybe a bit more aggressive than other areas. You don’t want this type on inconsistent sound. You want to strive for a balanced turnaround, and steady timing with all your legato patterns. This will make your sound much more professional.

4. Balancing Your Picking and Legato Volumes: As we were just talking about smoothing out your legato patterns, the next part to the equation is balancing out the picking notes within your legato rolls. This is real “Horsepower” within your guitar playing speed.

You see, even though most of the time you won’t pick within legato patterns, there are definite times you will.

This usually happens when you go to a different string.

The trick to mastering this is to ease up on the pick, and emphasize the hammer-on and make them as clean and even as possible.

When you think along these lines, you’ll be able make the final adjustments between your left and right hand, (in regards to volume blending) while your playing licks.

5. Seamless Non-Picking Turnarounds: Most of the time you won’t use your pick on turnarounds. I think it sounds more balanced and fluent when you don’t pick the turnarounds.

The way you want to practice this is to simply roll two notes up, and roll two notes back…repeat.

This should sound even and balanced (seamless). When you turnaround on any string it will be done this way. Even though you might cross over four strings before you make a turnaround, when you do, this is how it’s done in it’s simplest form.

6. Hybrid Picking Combination Utilizing Everything: This is ultimately where you want to be, in terms of being in complete control of all methods of alternate picking and legato runs.

You want to visualize the big picture and combine all the elements as smoothly as possible.

When you change from aggressive picking to smooth legato you want to make it sound as natural and seamless as possible. This requires practicing lengthy patterns that use all the methods above.

If you consistently practice in this mindset, you will rapidly jump leaps and bounds ahead within your lead guitar playing, not to mention dramatically improving your overall musical vocabulary.

In this section, I recommend spending extra time practicing and understanding the concept incorporating all the factors involved with alternate picking and legato.

It requires more time to get comfortable with all of these elements, but I promise you it’s time well spent. You'll start seeing immediate improvement by just being aware of this concept when you practice.

What are the best ways to utilize Repetitive Guitar Licks?

1. What Exactly Are Repetitive Guitar Licks? They're simply a series of notes that repeat in a continuous cycle. The cycle of notes create a bigger picture (sound-scape) as a whole, rather than a continuous string of single notes that create a single musical run.

They're basically catchy patterns played multiple times in a row.

2. Using This Technique To Grab Your Listeners Attention: You can easily grab your listeners attention and then hold them there. You should try this test for yourself, and notice a listener's reaction when you break into a cool repetitive lick in the middle of a single note run. It’s amazing how it has the same effect every time on your listeners.

3. Use To Bridge or Break-Up Phrasing: This is a great way to bridge together two phrases, or separate long single note runs with several insertions of catchy repetitive licks within those runs.

Also, use this techniques within your melodic single note patterns, etc. It makes everything sound musical.

4. Develop a Large Supply of Repetitive Guitar Licks: This is one thing that you truly can not have too many of.

Repetitive guitar licks do so much for your playing, it's the difference of being able to playing for sixty seconds, or sixty minutes.

Mastering Your Timing Timing is the element responsible for how tight and “in the pocket” your overall guitar playing is. If you have a great sense of timing you’re already a few steps ahead of the game in most cases.

For some guitarists, timing is something they really have to work at, and for others it comes naturally.

Either way, it can be mastered, and it needs to be mastered in order for you to be the absolute best lead guitarist you can be.

There's no getting around this one. Without a great sense of timing, you'll always find yourself struggling within your own guitar playing and certainly within a band scenario.

What's The Importance Of Mastering Your Timing? Something as simple as timing can be responsible for so many problems within your playing. It can also cause serious problems within a band…

It's a serious problem (within a band) even if it’s just one person who’s timing is off.

It certainly doesn’t have to be a problem, and I suggest that if you are in a band, that you make sure everyone in the band has a complete understanding of the tempo and count throughout all of your .

This includes... all the breaks, the changes, the endings beginnings etc… it all comes down to everyone thoroughly understanding and reacting together within the counts between all the pauses, stops, time changes, dynamics, etc... throughout all of your songs.

IMPORTANT: The tighter your timing is, the more “In The Pocket” you’ll be. Always be working on your timing! This is how you eliminate the guess work, and bring the entire band’s mindset together as a unit.

We’ll look at four basic time signatures and count them with a metronome. I'll explain these in a very simple layout.

One thing I want to point out is that your metronome does not have to be clicking at a fast rate to play fast over it. You'll need to learn how to play these four different time signatures over a single metronome rate. I suggest setting the metronome at (88) to start with.

1. Single Note Counting: Single note counting is simply a count of each note individually.

Example: 1,2,3,4 / 1,2,3,4 / 1,2,3,4 / 1,2,3,4 etc… Every count is directly on each beat of the 4 note count. This is the easiest and simplest form of counting, but still very important to maintain consistent timing when using this basic count.

2. Double Note Counting: Double note counting is when you insert an extra note in between the original 4 count.

Example: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & / 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & / 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & / 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & etc... You are simply doubling the count by adding an “&” in between each number.

3. Triple Note Counting: Triple note counting is when you insert two extra notes between the original 4 count.

Example: 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a / 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a / 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a / 1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 & a etc... You are simply tripling the count by adding an “& a” in between each number.

4. Quad Note Counting: Quad note counting is when you insert three extra notes in between the original 4 count. (aka...16th notes)

Example: 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a / 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a / 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a / 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a etc... You are simply tripling the count by adding an “e & a” in between each number.

I think it’s very beneficial to turn on a metronome and just jam with it for fifteen minutes. Often times, guitarists miss the real value in jamming with a metronome. It's actually very helpful and fun!

Play every kind of timing you can think of, along with as many techniques and methods we’ve previously covered. It's the most consistent drummer you'll ever jam with!

Suggestion For Maximum Results: My suggestion is to combine your practice routine by working on your timing, at the same time using the methods and techniques we’ve already discussed throughout these modules.

You’ll be able to maximize your practice time to achieve the best possible results in the shortest amount of time.

Not only will you be maximizing your practice time, but you'll be working on all these elements together at once, which will automatically and sub-consciously start burning the mechanics of all these elements into your musical mindset.

This may sound like a lot to take in, but it's actually much easier than you might think.

Self Discipline and Mental Focus: Here’s the raw truth… Without self discipline and mental focus, your chances to achieve your full potential as a lead guitarist are minimal.

I’ll just go ahead and say it right now… You won't.

I know that’s harsh, but It’s true.

Now, this is not meant to be a big bummer, in fact it’s good news! You see, because now you know as long as you have self-discipline, and keep practicing and focusing on implementing what you’re learning, you’re going to SUCCEED!

What's The Importance Of Self Discipline & Mental Focus? The “MASTER KEY” to unlock your full potential as a Killer Lead Guitarist is simply Self Discipline and Mental Focus.

The reason is because nobody is going to make you to do these things, (and you do have to do these things) to become a Great Lead Guitarist.

It's very similar to owning your own business... in that, nobody is going to make you get up every morning and do the necessary things it takes to operate a business, but if you do those things, you're opportunity for success has no limit. It's all up to you, and how bad you really want it!

Keep this in mind... It's what you make it to be. Don't view the self- discipline as punishment or work. You'll be very surprised at how quickly a daily routine becomes easier and fun. When you start seeing results, you'll want more and more, and your progress will snowball.

IMPORTANT: Over the past few segments we’ve looked at some of the most important “difference makers” within lead guitar playing. Some may be easier than others, but the bottom line is they all work together and play an important role in your overall level of success. It only requires you to be open minded and take immediate action. Then, it’s simply a matter of time before you’ll reach and surpass your goals.

1. Push Yourself Daily & Work On Things That Are Difficult: Each day you should work on things that are hard for you to do. WHY? It's because most people don't spend time working on things that are hard to do, and if you DO, then you'll start seeing results. And... positive results will create incentive for you to continue onward.

You Will Become A Better Guitarist!

Each day, after you put in some hard work, reward yourself with some fun jam time. You always want to keep the fun within your playing.

Remember, you need to have structure within your daily practice schedule. Structure will help you produce better and faster results from the time you put in.

REMEMBER: It’s not how many years you’ve been playing that makes the difference, it’s how many hours! This takes us right back to the laser focused practice time.

EXAMPLE: Take a guitar player that has been playing for ten years, but only practiced once a week, he wouldn’t be as good of a guitarist than someone who's been playing for just five years, putting in only a half hour of focused practice time daily.

Think about that for a minute. It’s amazing when you think about highly disciplining yourself by putting in one, two, or three solid hours of focused practice time daily. You can get really good, really quick, if you really want to. I've seen it happen many times. Now, it's your turn!

2. What You Practice Is Just As Important As How You Practice: Each one of the Lead Guitar Success Secrets that we’ve gone over within the past segments, are a big part of WHAT you should be practicing. A minimum of half an hour per day of laser focused practice on these past segments is HOW you should be practicing. However, I suggest more than a half hour for faster results.

3. Left and Right Hand Mechanics: You really need to be “mentally in tune” with what the mechanics of your left and right hand are doing when performing any specific technique or method. This means playing things very slow while watching and feeling exactly what the left and right hands are doing when playing your licks, phrases, runs, scales, etc… If you understand exactly what it takes mentally, it will easily be delivered physically with precision.

4. Minimum of Half an Hour of Focused Practice Time Daily: I think by now you know the importance of (a minimum) half an hour of laser focused practice time daily. I highly suggest more than this, but certainly no less.

FACT: Half an hour of laser focused guitar practice is far more beneficial to your success than two full hours of un-focused playing. Think about this… You could have a shovel in your hands for three hours, and only have one full bucket of dirt to show for it... Or, have the same shovel in your hands for only half an hour, and dig a twenty foot long trench. I’m hoping this changes the way you think about your practice time.

Suggestion For Maximum Results: Set small goals, of which you can see light at the end of the tunnel. You also want to have your long term goals in place, but it’s a series of small goals that get you there with the clear vision needed.
