We officially started our 150th year with Convocation held on Sunday, 6th November. Due to the Faculty strike at the UofM it was decided to move Convocation to the Cathedral Church of St John’s on Main Street. A fit- ting setting for the 150th Convocation given the Cathedral and the College were closely associated for many years. Piita Taqtu Irniq was conferred the degree of Doctor of Canon Law (honoris causa) and gave the Address. Faye Thomson, ’72 was admitted as an honorary fellow. IN LUMINE SUMMER 2017 3 This year’s J-Pin recipients Graduating in 1976 with a BA in French, Spanish and Italian is Edward Benjamin. Yongtian Cheng Friends of St John’s College Luncheon Yongtian Cheng, ’16 gave the What St John’s College Means to Me luncheon address. Yongtian, an international student from China, has lived in Residence for 5 years. Yongtian found the family atmosphere he needed at the College in the help he received from fellow students and the support with the scholarships/bursaries. Celebrating their 50th anniversary since graduation are: Thomas Walker ’66, Jeremy Dawson ’66 and Keven Van Camp ‘66. 4 St John’s College at 150 A Symposium held Thursday 27th April Retired Fellow Jack Bumstead delivered the morning keynote, which was followed by papers on the early days of the Red River Settlement and St John’s College. After lunch Retired Fellow Anthony Waterman, ‘62 delivered the keynote. The programme continued bringing the College into the 20th century and ending with Stirling Walkes, ’64 talking about “The Carribean Invasion”. Here is an except from Stirling’s comments: ‘The Caribbean Invasion’ of the UofM started in the late 1950’s and ended in the latter part of the 1960’s.
