This middle/junior high school volume is followed shortly by Career Education for the Gifted and Tab ented Student and a revision (after seven printings) of the original volume. These, with our manpower publications, represent deeply held convictions as to: (1)The centrality of work in life and society (2)The need for concept to be fleshed out with solid "how to do it" suggestions This same concern for the basic quality of life and the essentiality of implementationof "social engineering" to improve that qualityis reflected in early childhood educa- tion (gee Your Child's Intellect, Olympus Publishing Company, 1973) and parent training, implemented in both the printed page and audio-visual presentations. Parenthood, too, is a career, the most basic one of all, and human development is society's greatest challenge. With those premises, the middle and junior high school assignment of self- and social exploration becomes a critical role in the development of the personality, the economy, and 10 the society. It is our hope to contribute modestly with this volume by helping educational administrators and teachers at that vital level be more effective in two essential aspects of that human development task: the development of values and the discovery of talents related to achievement and service.

    Siegfried Kracauer was one of the twentieth century's most brilliant cultural crit­ ics, a bold and prolific scholar, and an incisive theorist of film. In this volume his important early writings on modern society during the Weimar Republic make their long-awaited appearance in English.     ABSTRACT Jesus on the Radio: Theological Reflection and Prophetic Witness of American Popular Music Meredith Anne Holladay, Ph.D. Mentor: Christopher Marsh, Ph.D. The image of God in humanity is the image of the creator, the creative spirit, the imagination, manifest in our ability to understand, appreciate, and reflect on the beauty of God in creation. Therefore, the spirit of imagination, beauty, and creativity is intrinsic to the fullness of a life of faith. Art is a boon to a life of faith; additionally art and creativity allow for and create a space for genuine theological reflection. Arguments made about art in general can be applied to forms of popular culture. The foundation for this project explores the nuances between definitions of “popular culture”, and asserts that popular culture can be and often is meaning-making and identity-forming. The theological significance of popular culture is couched in terms of theological reflection and prophetic witness. The implicit assumption that anything dubbed “Christian” maintains theological depth, and creations lacking that distinction are ‘secular,’ or ‘profane,’ and therefore devoid of any moral good or theological import, is false, and a distinction this project serves in dissolving. The third chapter asserts a strong link between theological and prophetic tasks, one flowing from the other. Genuine theological reflection must result in an outward and public response. Theological reflection connects to the truth of one’s lived experience, and speaks honestly about the human story; out of that experience, voices of prophetic witness speak truth to power, out of and in solidarity with lived experiences.

The intent was to determine the accuracy of public perceptions about extensive substance use in media popular among youth. Because teenagers are major consumers of movies and music, there is concern about the potential for media depictions of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs to encourage use. For instance, portrayals that tend to legitimize, normalize, trivialize, or glorify substances might suggest to young people that this behavior is without negative consequences. Findings reveal that 98 percent of movies studied depicted illicit drugs, alcohol, tobacco or over-the-counter/prescription medicines. The major fine-ling from the cning .anal the dramatic difference among music categories, with substance references being particularly common in Rap. Illicit drugs were mentioned in 63 percent of Rap songs versus about 10 percent of the lyrics in the other categories.
