“Off the Shelf” by Patti Smith Text Generalitat de Catalunya Departament d’Ensenyament Escoles Oficial d’Idiomes “Off the Shelf” by Patti Smith Text Part 1 When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small ranch house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A. & P. to buy groceries. We did not have a car, so we walked, and I would help her carry the bags. My mother had to shop very carefully, as my father was on strike. She was a waitress, and her paycheck and tips barely sustained us. One day, while she was weighing prices, a promotional display for the World Book Encyclopedia caught my eye. The volumes were cream-colored, with forest-green spines stamped in gold. Volume I was ninety-nine cents with a ten-dollar purchase. All I could think of, as we combed the aisles for creamed corn, dry milk, cans of Spam, and shredded wheat, was the book, which I coveted with all my being. I stood at the register with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother produced a five, some singles, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninety-nine cents.” I did not understand my mother’s mounting anxiety; she did not have enough change and had to sacrifice a large can of Le Sueur peas to pay the amount. “Not now, Patricia,” she said sternly. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the groceries and followed her home, crestfallen. The next Saturday, my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A. & P. alone. Two quarts of milk and a loaf of bread: that’s what a dollar bought in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one first volume left, which I placed in my cart. I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles. A lot of time went by, but I had little concept of time, a fact that often got me in trouble. I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. Impulsively I put it inside my shirt and zipped up my plaid windbreaker. I was a tall, skinny kid, and I’m certain every contour of the book was conspicuous. I strolled the aisles for several more minutes, then went through the checkout, paid my dollar, swiftly bagged the three items, and headed home with my heart pounding. Suddenly I felt a heavy tap on my shoulder and turned to find the biggest man I had ever seen. He was the store detective, and he asked me to hand it over. I just stood in silence. Text Generalitat de Catalunya Departament d’Ensenyament Escoles Oficial d’Idiomes “We know you stole something—you will have to be searched.” Horrified, I slid the heavy book out from the bottom of my shirt. He looked at it quizzically. “This is what you stole, an encyclopedia?” “Yes,” I whispered, trembling. “Why didn’t you ask your parents?” “I did,” I said, “but they didn’t have the money.” “Do you know it’s wrong?” “Yes.” “Do you go to church?” “Yes, twice a week.” “Well, you’re going to have to tell your parents what you did.” “No, please.” “Then I will do it. What’s the address?” I was silent. “Well, I’ll have to walk you home.” “No, please, I will tell them.” “Do you swear?” “Yes, yes, sir.” My mother was agitated when I arrived home. “Where were you? I needed the bread for your father’s sandwiches. I told you to come right home.” And suddenly everything went green, like right before a tornado. My ears were ringing, I felt dizzy, and I threw up. My mother tended to me immediately, as she always did. She had me lie on the couch and got a cold towel for my head and sat by me with her anxious expression. “What is it, Patricia?” she asked. “Did something bad happen?” PART 2 “Yes,” I whispered. “I stole something.” I told her about my lust for the book, my wrongdoing, the big detective. My mother was a good mother, but she could be explosive, and I tensed, waiting for the barrage of verbal punishment, the sentencing that always seemed to outweigh the crime. But she said nothing. She told me that she would call the store and tell the detective I had confessed, and that I should sleep. When I awoke, sometime later, the house was silent. My mother had taken my siblings to the field to play. I sat up and noticed a brown-paper bag with my name on it. I opened it and inside was the World Book Encyclopaedia, Volume I. Robert Miller Gallery is pleased to announce Eighteen Stations, a special project by Patti Smith. Eighteen Stations revolves around the world of M Train, Smith’s bestselling book released in 2015. M Train chronicles, as Smith describes, “a roadmap to my life,” as told from the seats of the cafés and dwellings she has worked from globally. Reflecting the themes and sensibility of the book, Eighteen Stations is a meditation on the act of artistic creation. It features the artist’s illustrative photographs that accompany the book’s pages, along with works by Smith that speak to art and literature’s potential to offer hope and consolation. The artist will be reading from M Train at the Gallery throughout the run of the exhibition. Patti Smith (b. 1946) has been represented by Robert Miller Gallery since her joint debut with Robert Mapplethorpe, Film and Stills, opened at its 724 Fifth Avenue location in 1978. Recent solo exhibitions at the Gallery include Veil (2009) and A Pythagorean Traveler (2006). In 2014 Rockaway Artist Alliance and MoMA PS1 mounted Patti Smith: Resilience of the Dreamer at Fort Tilden, as part of a special project recognizing the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway Peninsula, where the artist has a home. Smith's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2013); Detroit Institute of Arts (2012); Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford (2011); Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporaine, Paris (2008); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2003); and The Andy Warhol Museum (2002).

  • Patti Smith: Wing an Exhibition of Photographs by Patti Smith on View for One Week Only at San Francisco Art Institute in Collaboration with Kurimanzutto
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Patti Smith: Wing An exhibition of photographs by Patti Smith on view for one week only at San Francisco Art Institute in collaboration with kurimanzutto January 14–19, 2019 (San Francisco, CA, December 10, 2018) San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and kurimanzutto are honored to announce Wing, an exhibition of photographs by visual artist, writer, and performer, Patti Smith. Presented from January 14–19, 2019, at the Diego Rivera Gallery at SFAI’s historic Chestnut Street campus, the exhibition features a selection of photographs centered on Smith’s connection to fellow artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The exhibition, which runs concurrently with the FOG Design+Art fair, is open and free to the public. This show focuses on Smith’s strong ties to the artistic and literary movements pursued during travels to Mexico. Presented in the same space as Rivera’s 1931 fresco, The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City, the exhibition sparks a direct dialogue between Smith’s imagery and the subjects of her intimate gaze. In her work, Smith reflects upon the timeless act of artistic creation and alchemy that unites artists by referring to a brotherhood of mental bonds that keeps ideas alive. In this way, the artist expresses her kinship to Mexico and solidarity with its revolutionary people— a sentiment demonstrated during performances and visits to the country over the years. During these trips, Smith composed and dedicated poetry to figures such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Isamu Noguchi, Roberto Bolaño, and the habitués of the Café La Habana, which included Octavio Paz and Che Guevara.

  • Iconic Artist
Artist, Musician and Poet Patti Smith’s New Photography and Installation Work to be Presented at the Wadsworth Atheneum HARTFORD, Conn., May 26, 2011 – From her explorations of artistic expression with friend and vanguard photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in the 1960s and 70s to her profound influence on the nascent punk rock scene in the late 1970s and 80s, pioneering artist, musician, and poet Patti Smith has made her mark on the American cultural landscape throughout her 40-year career. This fall, an exhibition of Smith’s work will premiere at the Wadsworth Atheneum, featuring over sixty new photographs and multimedia installations created between 2002 and 2011. The first museum presentation of Smith’s work in the United States in nearly ten years, Patti Smith: Camera Solo will highlight the continual symbiosis between Smith’s photography and her interest in poetry and literature and is on view from October 21, 2011 – February 19, 2012. “Patti Smith’s photography, shaped over decades of observation, commemorates the artists, poets, authors, family and friends from whom she draws inspiration. Modest in scale and shot solely in black and white, they are sometimes disquieting and often beautiful, but always intimate,” said Susan Talbott, Director and CEO, Wadsworth Atheneum. “We are thrilled to present this work at the Wadsworth Atheneum where Smith’s mentor Sam Wagstaff was curator and the work of her dear friend Robert Mapplethorpe was the subject of two separate exhibitions.” Patti Smith: Camera Solo will present approximately sixty black-and-white silver gelatin prints photographed with her vintage Polaroid camera. In the era of digital imaging and manipulation, Smith’s works champion the use of photography in its most classical sense: as a tool to document a “found” moment.

  • Horses”—Patti Smith (1975) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by Kimbrew Mcleod (Guest Post)*
“Horses”—Patti Smith (1975) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by Kimbrew McLeod (guest post)* Original album Original label John Cale “Jesus died for somebody’s sins / but not mine,” Patti Smith growled during the opening lines of “Horses,” the first album to emerge from New York City’s punk scene. Released at the end of 1975, it can best be understood by surveying the panorama of influences that shaped its creation: first and foremost, the overlapping underground arts scenes in downtown New York City during the 1960s and 1970s. While “Horses” seemed to emerge fully formed from the mind of a brilliant lyricist and musician, it was also very much the product of an environment that enabled Smith to find her voice. Growing up in a dreamworld filled with poetry and rock ’n’ roll, Smith first fell for Little Richard while living in New Jersey, which introduced her to the idea of androgyny. At age 16, she came across a copy of “Illuminations” by 19th-century French poet Arthur Rimbaud, which expanded her aesthetic horizons. By spring 1967, she graduated from high school and was doing temp work at a textbook factory in Philadelphia, which inspired her early poem-turned-song “Piss Factory,” about having her face shoved into a toilet bowl by bullying coworkers. Smith plotted her escape to New York City, where she landed a much more rewarding job at Brentano’s bookshop and also met Robert Mapplethorpe, who eventually photographed the iconic “Horses” album cover. She and Mapplethorpe became lovers and moved into the Chelsea Hotel, where Smith cultivated social connections that led her to become a performer in underground theater productions around town.
