VVaallvvee CCllaatttteerr Early Ford V-8 Club of America www.nvrg.org Northern Virginia Regional Group #96 Chartered December 11, 1977 Volume XXXVII, No. 5 May 2015 Ken Burns - Editor The 1940 Fords, Lincolns and Mercurys By Wayne Chadderton In Atlanta, Georgia, a brand new 1940 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet leads the December 1939 celebration of the premier of Gone with the Wind. At the 12th Academy Awards held in 1940, it received ten Academy Awards from 13 nominations, including wins for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. It set records for the total number of wins and nominations at the time. When adjusted for monetary inflation, it is still the most successful film in box-office history. Our April meeting was a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Ford Motor Company’s 1940 line of new cars. The celebration was led by John Sweet and Cliff Green. John began with a summary of significant events that occurred in 1940 such as Gone with the Wind’s domination at the box office and the Academy Awards. It was the year that Tiffany & Company moved to the first air conditioned store in the country at 727 Fifth Avenue establish- ing that area of Manhattan as the city’s most fashionable shopping district. In automobile related news the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened on October 1, 1940. During the 1930s the Pennsylvania Turnpike was designed to improve automobile transportation across the mountains of Pennsylvania, using seven tunnels built in the 1880s for the abandoned South Pennsylvania Railroad. The turnpike ran between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg as the first long-distance, limited-access highway in the United States.

« Jozd TOOB 1939 AASTAL ÜLLATUSI! Kodanik! Auto ostja! Kvaliteet on üks Dearborni vähestest traditsioonidest. Ford omabki ainulaadsed võimalused kõrge kvaliteedi nõuete säili- tamiseks. Ta on ise töötleja kõigis astmeis — rauamullast alates kuni valmi autoni. Sel kombel saavutatud kokkuhoid siirdub ostja arvele erakorralise väärtusena. Nende kvaliteetmasinate silmapaistvaim tunnus on V-kujuline mootor varemalt ainult kallite autode eriomadus — millise üksnes Ford on paigutanud kõikidesse hinnaklassidesse. V-kujulised mootorid omavad kiiruse maailma rekordid maal, merel ja õhus. Nad on võimsad ja tõhusad. Fordi V-mootorites on hääletu ja pehme käik ühendatud erakordse ökonoomsusega. Lisaks V-kaheksatele valmistab Ford veel 4-sil. kergeid masinaid, mis oma odavale hinnale vaatamata rahuldavad nõudlikemaidki soove ja millistes Fordi juba vanasõnaks muutunud ökonoomsus on tipuni aren- datud. Veoautode — sari on praegu täielikum kui kunagi varem. Lisaks endistele on praegu saadaval ka 95-hob. jõulise V-mootoriga varustatud alus. Fordson-universaaltraktori sari on üha endiselt põllu- mehele »kõik kõiges». Ühe sõnaga — ei leidu ühtki elatisala tänapäeval — olgu kõne all kodaniku majapidamine, kaubandus, tööstus, või põllumajandus — millele Ford ei saaks pakkuda usaldatavat, otstarbekohast ja ökonoomset sõi- dukit. Kõigil on seega põhjust tutvuda Ford-toodetega.

Bob Scales ‘40 Convertible earns Dearborn Monthly Newsletter of the Early Ford V8 Club of America Bob Scales’ ‘40 convertible East Tennessee Regional Group July 6, 2015 earned a Dearborn Award at the Eastern national meet in Concord, NC, June 8-11, scoring 993 of 1,000 points for a perfect car as the judg- es gave it a thorough going over. This is not the first time it has received a Dearborn rating. Its former owner had claimed a simi- lar honor in 1993, a year after it had been restored for him. The car had apparently been stored in a protected environment since that time until Bob bought it in Febru- ary 2013. Bob reported that the speedome- ter had registered only 48 miles af- ter the previous restoration when he acquired it. Bob said in prepar- ing it for the recent showing, he had detailed the underside of the car, given it a complete lubrication Judges look carefully at the interior and exterior of Bob’s ‘40 convertible. and changed all the fluids before 19 flathead Ford V8s compete in Great Race he installed a Ford script battery, Of the 117 vehicles entered in the 2015 Great Race, 19 were flathead, replaced the spark plug wires and early Ford V8s.
