A Biblical, Historical, and Reformed Perspective Justin Carruthers Doctor of Ministry School of Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary 2019 Many protestant versions of believers’ royal priesthood, including the Christian Reformed Church in North America, are missionally inadequate: priestly functions are often monopolized by the Ministerial Priesthood,1 which leads to the defrocking of the ministry of the priesthood of all believers. In essence, the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers is treated as though it is a true, factual, and fascinating piece of Christian doctrine, but is not always practically lived out in local congregations. We believe in it in theory, but not in practice. A biblical and missional understanding of the church must root the priesthood of all believers in baptism, the initiatory rite that ordains all people into priestly service in the world. A proper re-framing of the priesthood of all believers will serve as the catalyst for a more robust ecclesiology and will be the impetus for the royal priesthood to commit to their earthly vocation to be witnesses of Christ in the world. UF “ROME PROJECT” LESSON 1 Reading and comprehension COLOSSEUM The Colosseum, or the Coliseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheatre (Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is an amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. It’s the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire. It is elliptical in plan and it’s 188 metres long. Inside the Colosseum there were about 50,000 seats for the spectators. The height of the outer wall is 48 meters. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions and dramas based on Classical mythology. The Colosseum is one of the symbols of Imperial Rome. ST. PETER’S BASILICA The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter is commonly known as Saint Peter's Basilica and it is a Late Renaissance church located within the Vatican City. In Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. The basilica is within a forecourt in two sections, both surrounded by tall colonnades. The basilica is cruciform in shape, with an elongated nave in the Latin cross form. The basilica contains a large number of tombs of popes considered outstanding artworks. There are also a number of sculptures in niches and chapels, including Michelangelo’s “Pieta”. The central feature is a baldachin over the Papal Altar designed by Lorenzo Bernini. For this purpose, thirteen Annunciations of this period which include that piece of furniture are analyzed, and in passing some inadequate interpretations that have been given about any of these pictorial images are evidenced. To justify our interpretations, we rely on an abundant corpus of texts through which many Fathers and theologians of the Latin Church consider the thalamus concept as an eloquent metaphor for the incarnation of the Son of God as a man in the Virgin Mary’s womb, as well as for her virginal divine maternity. The doctrines of God, sin, judgment, redemption, and eschatology collide. Sometimes personalities collide. And, hopefully, sin and grace collide. This means that practicing discipline well requires good pastoral and theological sensibilities. So we're devoting a second eJournal in a row to the topic, both to exercise our own sensibilities and yours. Mark Dever and Greg Gilbert provide counsel on what to do before you practice discipline. Matt Schmucker, both in his new article and in the one from the archives, offers advice on dealing with the non-attenders. Stephen Matteucci considers the importance of the one or two witnesses in Matthew 18. And I tackle the question of whether a member can resign his or her membership in order to avoid discipline altogether. Finally, several pastors recall lessons they've learned the hard way in the forum, where Bob Johnson states the conclusion of the matter well: discipline in a church should be as normal and regular as preaching, teaching, and evangelism. That's a tough idea to accept, and one more reason we think it's worth coming back to this issue yet again. Italian Humanism Was developed during the fourteenth and the beginning of the fifteenth centuries as a response to the Medieval scholastic education • Growing concern with the natural world, the individual, and humanity’s worldly existence. • Revived interest in classical cultures and attempt to restore the glorious past of Greece and Rome. Recovering of Greek and Roman texts that were previously lost or ignored. • Interest in the liberal arts - grammar, rhetoric, poetry, history and moral philosophy. • Promotes human values as distinct from religious values, mainly Roman civic virtues: self-sacrificing service to the state, participation in government, defense of state institutions. Renaissance architecture: Style of architecture, reflecting the rebirth of Classical culture, that originated in Florence in the early 15th century. There was a revival of ancient Roman forms, including the column and round arch, the tunnel vault, and the dome. The basic design element was the order. Knowledge of Classical architecture came from the ruins of ancient buildings and the writings of Vitruvius. As in the Classical period, proportion was the most important factor of beauty. Filippo Brunelleschi (1377 - 1446), Florentine architect and engineer. Trained as a sculptor and goldsmith, he turned his attention to architecture after failing to win a competition for the bronze doors of the Baptistery of Florence. SACRED ART, CRUX GEMMATA, AND MARBLE ALTAR AND FURNISHINGS SACRED ART Sacred art in the Christ Cathedral features new work by prominent artists inspired by the life of Jesus Christ, who depict Him using modern iconography. The sacred art, by many internationally recognized artists, is designed to welcome worshippers into the presence of the Lord, introduce the communion of saints and the glory of Our Lady, the Blessed Mother, as well as to accompany us on our journey of faith inspired by the Holy Spirit. “The art in Christ Cathedral is both evocative and provocative, and evokes commentary. That’s when art is successful,” says Brother William Woeger, a member of the Sacred Art Commission. Brother Woeger is consulting on the art commissions and is one of the artists responsible for creating the Crux Gemmata (crucifix over the altar), altar candles, Paschal Candle, sanctuary lamps, reliquary (container for relics at the altar), and Dedication Candles. Pablo Eduardo, a Bolivian-born sculptor known for marrying his Spanish-American heritage with his art, designed the Narthex wall art, 14 Stations of the Cross, and the Festal Doors. Eduardo’s sculptures, rendered in bronze, are recognized for capturing a snapshot of artistic metamorphosis while celebrating rhythm, emotion, texture and tension. He is known for developing close relationships with his clients. Prior to the beginning of the project, he met with the Most Rev. Kevin W. Vann, Bishop of Orange, and Fr. Christopher Smith, Episcopal Vicar of Christ Cathedral, to understand their vision
