The result, Lewisohn Stadium, named after its principal benefactor, Adolph Lewisohn, and modeled much along the lines of an ancient Roman coliseum, became that and much more. -

Labelle: Reflections on the Passing of Allan Kelly 110 Folkways Records and the Ethics of Collecting: Some Personal Reflections1 MICHAEL ASCH Abstract: In this article, anthropologist Michael Asch recounts fascinating histories surrounding the genesis of Folkways Records, focusing on aspects of diversity, selection, and ethics. He illus- trates the discussion by invoking pertinent anthropological and folklore paradigms. olkways Records and Service Corporation, unarguably the most unique Frecording company ever to exist, was founded in 1948 by my father, Moses Asch. In the 38 years of operation, between 1948 and 1986 when my father died, Folkways produced over 2100 albums, an average of more than one per week – a feat accomplished with a labour force that never exceeded a handful of people. Furthermore, he rarely took a record out of print, and then never for commercial reasons. It was a record catalogue of staggering diversity and eclecticism. To give you a sense of the breadth of this collection, here are just a few of the familiar names found on the label: Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Jean Ritchie, Mary Lou Williams, Ella Jenkins, The Carter Family, Lucinda Williams, Janis Ian, Martin Luther King, Bertold Brecht, Margaret Mead, Langston Hughes, W. E. B. DuBois, and Bob Dylan (under the pseudonym Blind Boy Grunt). Significantly, Folkways also included a vast repertoire of lesser-known artists important to such genres as blues, bluegrass, old-time, and country, and contains many of the most iconic songs in the American -

FRANKScience SINATRA & Society, Vol. 66, No. 3, Fall 2002, 311–335 311 Frank Sinatra: The Popular Front and an American Icon GERALD MEYER ABSTRACT: Frank Sinatra, a vocalist who helped raise Ameri- can popular music to an entirely new level, is one of the most chronicled celebrities of modern times. Nonetheless, the extent of his involvement with the left has gone largely unreported. Sinatra played an active role in a score of Popular Front organi- zations. In contrast to most other celebrity leftists, he also actively fought against racism and intolerance by speaking widely, includ- ing at high schools where racial incidents had occurred. Vicious red-baiting contributed to an astounding downward spiral in his career, and caused him to distance himself from the left. Despite harassment of various kinds, Sinatra maintained close ties to the liberal wing of the Democratic Party until 1972, when he abruptly moved to the right. Sinatra’s association with the Popular Front suggests that its influence was far wider and that its repression was more comprehensive that is generally recognized. RANCIS ALBERT SINATRA was “one of the most chronicled celebrities of modern times . the focus of oceans of ink and Fmiles of film and video footage” (Kuntz, 2000, xi, 40). Indeed, Sinatra may be the most documented entertainer in history. Aside from innumerable biographies, articles, and documentaries, he has been the subject of a scholarly conference and an encyclopedia. Despite this obsession to detail the ebb and flow of the life of “The Voice from Hoboken,” relatively little attention has been paid to his brief, yet intense, involvement with the political left, which among other things caused the United States government to deny him secu- rity clearance to perform before the troops in Korea, and led to an 311 312 SCIENCE & SOCIETY extensive inquiry to determine whether he should be indicted for perjury because on his passport application he affirmed that he had never been a member of a subversive group (FBI Files 62–83219–28 and 36, 211–232, 244). -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Norman Corwin's The Lonesome Train (Decca Recording) 1944 Abstract The Lonesome Train, the cantata for radio with words by Millard Lampell, music by Earl Robinson, and directed by Norman Corwin, probably originated in a dilapidated brownstone on lower Sixth Avenue in Manhattan: The Almanac House, a radical commune for music organisers in Greenwich Village, including Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Corwin is widely regarded as a guru of thoughtful radio producers, a poet-laureate of radio. From 1936, when he helped create WQXR-FM in New York City (later, voice of the New York Times) to his death 75 years later, Norman Corwin managed to be simultaneously commercial, popular, and experimental. The series in which The Lonesome Train appears, ‘Columbia Presents Corwin,’ was made up of dramatised readings, interview excerpts, dramatisations of historical moments - oral and terrifying creativity in the art, as opposed to the craft, of radio.
