I will be forever grateful for her understanding of my desire to continue classes and complete this thesis, and her ability to help me retain my focus and positive outlook on the task. iv ABSTRACT Ramjet and scramjet engines are being developed to provide a more fuel efficient means of propulsion at high Mach numbers. Part of the development of these engines involves test and evaluation of an engine in ground facilities as well as in flight. Ground facilities, like Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) and those at engine manufacturers like General Electric (GE) and Pratt & Whitney (PW), have decades of experience testing traditional turbine engines and much less experience testing full scale ramjet engines. Testing a supersonic engine in a free-jet mode presents a host of challenges not experienced during traditional direct connect turbine engine tests. Characterizing the performance of an engine in a free-jet test facility is a difficult task due in part to the difficulty in determining how much air the engine is ingesting and the spillage, friction and base drag of the engine installation. As more exotic propulsion systems like DARPA’s Falcon Combined Cycle Engine Test (FaCET) article or NASA’s X-43 are developed, there is a greater need for effective ground tests to determine engine performance and operability prior to flight testing. This thesis proposes a method for calculating three key performance parameters (airflow, fuel flow, and thrust) and investigates the uncertainty influences for these calculations. A data reduction method was developed for this thesis to calculate the engine airflow, net thrust, and specific impulse (ISP) in a ground test of a generic ramjet engine in a free-jet test facility. It considered typical measurements for an engine test (pressures, temperatures, fuel flow, scale force, and engine and cowl geometry). Once the code was developed, an uncertainty analysis of the calculations was conducted, starting with a simplified analytical assessment. A common industry accepted uncertainty approach was then used in conjunction with the data reduction code to determine the sensitivity or influence coefficients of the independent measurements on the dependent parameters by the dithering method.     Rev. 8/15 AD/GW ChE 253M Experiment No. 2 COMPRESSIBLE GAS FLOW The objective of this experiment is to familiarize the student with methods for measurement of compressible gas flow and to study gas flow under subsonic and supersonic flow conditions. The experiment is divided into three distinct parts: (1) Calibration and determination of the critical pressure ratio for a critical flow nozzle under supersonic flow conditions (2) Calculation of the discharge coefficient and Reynolds number for an orifice under subsonic (non- choked) flow conditions and (3) Determination of the orifice constants and mass discharge from a pressurized tank in a dynamic bleed down experiment under (choked) flow conditions. The experimental set up consists of a 100 psig air source branched into two manifolds: the first used for parts (1) and (2) and the second for part (3). The first manifold contains a critical flow nozzle, a NIST-calibrated in-line digital mass flow meter, and an orifice meter, all connected in series with copper piping. The second manifold contains a strain-gauge pressure transducer and a stainless steel tank, which can be pressurized and subsequently bled via a number of attached orifices. A number of NIST-calibrated digital hand held manometers are also used for measuring pressure in all 3 parts of this experiment. Assorted pressure regulators, manual valves, and pressure gauges are present on both manifolds and you are expected to familiarize yourself with the process flow, and know how to operate them to carry out the experiment. Nozzles are frequently used to control the rate of flow, speed, direction, mass, shape, and/or the pressure of the stream that emerges from them. A rocket engine nozzle is a propelling nozzle (usually of the de Laval type) used in a rocket engine to expand and accelerate the hot gases from combustion so as to produce thrust according to Newton’s law of motion. Combustion gases are produced by burning the propellants in combustor, they exit the nozzle at very high Speed (hypersonic). 1.3 Properties of Rocket Nozzle Nozzle produces thrust. Exhaust gases from combustion are pushed into throat region of nozzle. Throat is smaller cross-sectional area than rest of engine, gases are compressed to high pressure. Nozzle gradually increases in cross-sectional area allowing gases to expand and push against walls creating thrust. Built to be compact, efficient, and powerful, turboshafts have made modern helicopters and the feats they accomplish possible. First implemented in the 1950s, turboshaft geometry has gone largely unchanged, but advances in materials and axial flow technology have continued to drive higher power and efficiency from today's turboshafts. Similarly to the turbojet and fan industry, there are only a handful of big players in the market. The usual suspects - Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, and Rolls-Royce - have taken over most of the industry, but lesser known companies like Lycoming and Turbomeca still hold a footing in the Turboshaft world. Most helicopter, marine, and auxiliary power units applications take advantage of turboshaft configurations. This study specifically focuses on the single expansion ramp nozzle (SERN) and aircraft-engine integration with an emphasis on the combined cycle engine integration into the conceptual aircraft design. A parametric study using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been employed to analyze the sensitivity of the SERN’s performance parameters with changing geometry and operating conditions. The SERN adapted to the different operating conditions and was able to retain its performance throughout the altitude simulated. The expansion ramp shape, angle, exit area, and cowl shape influenced the thrust substantially. The internal nozzle expansion and expansion ramp had a significant effect on the lift and moment performance. An optimized SERN was assembled into a scramjet and was subject to various nozzle inflow conditions, to which combustion flow from twin strut injectors produced the best thrust performance. Side fence studies observed longer and diverging side fences to produce extra thrust compared to small and straight fences.     2. AFTERBURNERS 2.1 Introduction The simple gas turbine cycle can be designed to have good performance characteristics at a particular operating or design point. However, a particu­ lar engine does not have the capability of producing a good performance for large ranges of thrust, an inflexibility that can lead to problems when the flight program for a particular vehicle is considered. For example, many airplanes require a larger thrust during takeoff and acceleration than they do at a cruise condition. Thus, if the engine is sized for takeoff and has its design point at this condition, the engine will be too large at cruise. The vehicle performance will be penalized at cruise for the poor off-design point operation of the engine components and for the larger weight of the engine. Similar problems arise when supersonic cruise vehicles are considered. The afterburning gas turbine cycle was an early attempt to avoid some of these problems. Afterburners or augmentation devices were first added to aircraft gas turbine engines to increase their thrust during takeoff or brief periods of acceleration and supersonic flight. The devices make use of the fact that, in a gas turbine engine, the maximum gas temperature at the turbine inlet is limited by structural considerations to values less than half the adiabatic flame temperature at the stoichiometric fuel-air ratio. As a result, the gas leaving the turbine contains most of its original concentration of oxygen. This oxygen can be burned with additional fuel in a secondary combustion chamber located downstream of the turbine where temperature constraints are relaxed.

The work- ings of turboshafts and the history of their use in helicopters is briefly described. Ideal cycle analyses of the Boeing 502-14 and of the General Electric T64 turboshaft engine are performed. I. Introduction to Turboshafts Turboshafts are an adaptation of gas turbine technology in which the principle output is shaft power from the expansion of hot gas through the turbine, rather than thrust from the exhaust of these gases. They have found a wide variety of applications ranging from air compression to auxiliary power generation to racing boat propulsion and more. This paper, however, will focus primarily on the application of turboshaft technology to providing main power for helicopters, to achieve extended vertical flight. II. Relationship to Turbojets As a variation of the gas turbine, turboshafts are very similar to turbojets. The operating principle is identical: atmospheric gases are ingested at the inlet, compressed, mixed with fuel and combusted, then expanded through a turbine which powers the compressor. There are two key diferences which separate turboshafts from turbojets, however. Figure 1. Basic Turboshaft Operation Note the absence of a mechanical connection between the HPT and LPT. Gas turbines are available with power outputs ranging in size from 300 horsepower (hp) to over 268,000 hp, with an average size of 40,200 hp.2 The primary fuels used in gas turbines are natural gas and distillate (No. 2) fuel oil.3 3.1.2 Process Description1,2 A gas turbine is an internal combustion engine that operates with rotary rather than reciprocating motion. Gas turbines are essentially composed of three major components: compressor, combustor, and power turbine. In the compressor section, ambient air is drawn in and compressed up to 30 times ambient pressure and directed to the combustor section where fuel is introduced, ignited, and burned. Combustors can either be annular, can-annular, or silo. An annular combustor is a doughnut-shaped, single, continuous chamber that encircles the turbine in a plane perpendicular to the air flow. Can-annular combustors are similar to the annular; however, they incorporate several can-shaped combustion chambers rather than a single continuous chamber. Annular and can-annular combustors are based on aircraft turbine technology and are typically used for smaller scale applications. A silo (frame-type) combustor has one or more combustion chambers mounted external to the gas turbine body. Silo combustors are typically larger than annular or can-annular combustors and are used for larger scale applications. The combustion process in a gas turbine can be classified as diffusion flame combustion, or lean- premix staged combustion.
