WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2019 FIRST IMPRESSIONS: KENTUCKY DERBY 145 OMAHA BEACH DRAWS by Steve Sherack POST 12, TABBED 4-1 LOUISVILLE, KY - With the First Saturday in May quickly approaching, TDN Senior Editor Steve Sherack caught up with KENTUCKY DERBY the connections of leading GI Kentucky Derby contenders to get some of their >First Impressions.= In this edition, we check in with MORNING-LINE FAVORITE Eaton Sales principal Reiley McDonald, Stone Farm=s Arthur B. Hancock III and Ben Glass, longtime advisor to owners Gary and Mary West. Potential Derby favorite Omaha Beach (War Front) was acquired privately by Rick Porter=s Fox Hill Farms out of the Eaton Sales consignment after RNA=ing for $625,000 at the 2017 KEESEP Yearling Sale. Bred in Kentucky by the Charming Syndicate, the half-brother to champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant=s Causeway) has won his last three starts, headed by an ultra-impressive performance in the GI Arkansas Derby. Eaton Sales also sold Omaha Beach=s winning dam Charming (Seeking the Gold), a daughter of Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady (Dehere), for $3.2 million at the 2006 KEESEP Yearling Sale. Cont. p5 IN TDN EUROPE TODAY The field is set for the 145th GI Kentucky Derby | Coady SMULLEN: WHY THE WEIGHT? Champion jockey Pat by Steve Sherack Smullen states his case for an increase in riding weights in his LOUISVILLE, KY - Post positions three and 12 were the only two weekly column. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. stalls remaining of 20 when Omaha Beach (War Front)=s name was called by announcer Travis Stone as the draw for the 145th GI Kentucky Derby rolled along before a packed house in the Aristides Lounge at Churchill Downs late Tuesday morning. It was the latter slot that was assigned to Fox Hill Farm=s streaking GI Arkansas Derby winner, tabbed as the 4-1 morning- line favorite by Mike Battaglia, at the traditional pill pull. Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella is a well-documented 0-for-6 in the >Run for the Roses,= with his best finish a fifth- place effort from Soul of the Matter back in 1994. He most recently saddled Action This Day (sixth) and Minister Eric (16th) in the 2004 Kentucky Derby. Was that the post Mandella preferred of the two that remained? AYeah it was, but none of the posts were bad,@ Mandella said. AYou=re just lucky to be here for the Derby. Mike [Smith] will probably let him run out of there, and having the 12 post, he=ll have the option of being able to size up how fast they=re going and he=ll use his best judgement.@ Cont. p3 We have 7 Kitten’s Joy mares booked to him. His half-brother Hawkbill is Kitten’s Joy’s leading earner. -Mark Partridge, Ramsey Farm FREE DROP BILLY FREE DROP BILLY Dixieland Band Dixie Union ..........................
