TRANSFER RESOURCES

Each VCCS college offers one or more transfer programs intended to meet the lower‐division curricular requirements of senior institution baccalaureate programs. Transfer from VCCS colleges to public institutions (especially for graduates of VCCS transfer programs) is facilitated by the State Policy on Transfer. Students desiring additional information about transfer programs and courses should contact the Chief Transfer Officer at a specific institution. The State Council of Higher Education (SCHEV) monitors and coordinates statewide transfer policy and activities through the State Committee on Transfer. The SCHEV Transfer Program Tool provides information on the transferability of more than 60 commonly offered courses from the VCCS to specific four year institutions. The web address is http://www.schev.edu/Students/xfr.asp

Many public and private universities and colleges in Virginia and surrounding areas publish a transfer guide to help students from VHCC and other schools in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) determine appropriate transfer procedures and transfer course equivalencies. Typically, students may request a transfer guide from the Admissions Officee at th transfer institution.

The listings below are for institutions that have transfer guides available on‐line. Under each college, a link to their transfer admissions page is also included. If the Virginia school you are interested in does not appear on this list you may visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia web page at http://www.schev.edu/ to access the websites of other Virginia colleges and universities. Also, VCCS Academic Services and Research has created a webpage called System‐wide Transfer and Articulation Agreements which contains up‐to‐date information regarding current agreements – http://www.vccs.edu/vccsasr/agreements.htm.

VHCC TRANSFER GUIDE

Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) transfer programs lead to the AA&S (Associate in Arts and Sciences) Degree. These programs are designed for transfer and include choices that allow students to coordinate VHCC course work with lower division senior institution requirements.

This booklet offers course suggestions for students and faculty advisors as they work together in coordinating transfer plans. Students are encouraged to follow VHCC. While VHCC provides transfer resources and information to assist students to determine the transfer admission policies and requirements of the department or program at the intended transfer institution. The information included in this booklet represents the most current information possible but does not list requirements for every four‐year degree. All education institutions may make changes to their academic programs without notice. Students should always consult with the appropriate colleges to determine current requirements. This guide is intended to be used in conjunction with VHCC and senior institution catalogs and other available materials. It is strongly recommended that you visit the campus and consult with advisors for firsthand information. This is an information and planning guide. It is strongly recommended that students interested in transferring consult with VHCC Division Counselors and the senior institution of their choice for assistance.

Many four‐year public colleges and universities in Virginia accept the Associates in Arts and Sciences degree in its entirety in lieu of their core curriculum requirements and award junior status to transfer students.

To help facilitate the transfer process, each state supported college and some private colleges In Virginia produce a “Virginia Community College Transfer Guide” These transfer guides provide specific information about the transferability of courses and/or programs to their respective institutions. Transfer guides can be obtained directly from the college of interest or students may also download many Virginia transfer guides on‐line at the following address:

Which Degrees Transfer Best? VHCC’s Associate in Arts and Sciences (AA&S) degree provides flexibility and ease of transfer. Most of the courses transfer to other educational institutions. Academic plans that fall in the Category are: Business Administration Education Education: Theater Arts Education: Art Education: Teacher Preparation Liberal Arts General Studies Science Science: Horticultural Production

All the above programs offer the general education core curriculum usually required in the lower division of baccalaureate programs. For example: Liberal Arts provides the general education core curriculum expected of first and second year students plus the foreign language requisite that many institutions and majors have. Therefore, students expecting eto complet a bachelor’s degree at a senior institution will be served well in any of these majors. While student, the above majors offer freshman and sophomore level courses for transfer students.

Ease of transfer depends on the senior institution selected and the major. Some liberal arts colleges have very flexible transfer policies, allowing students to use many Associate in Applied Science4 (AAS) oriented courses as electives toward the bachelor’s degree, while other schools require adherence to a specific general education core which is more easily found in the AA&S Degree Programs. Students should not expect courses in their Associate in Applied Science (AAS) programs to transfer without verification from the specific senior institution of choice.

The following courses outline the core curricula found in the Arts and Sciences degrees.

▪English Generally, transfer students should complete English 111‐112 plus 6 semester hours of literature.

▪Mathematics MTH 151‐152 is generally acceptable for majors in Liberal Arts and General Studies. However, the most solid one‐year math transfers series is MTH 163‐164 or Math 173‐174. Business majors should take MTH 163 and 271 or MTH 241 and 242. Students in teacher Preparation programs should take MTH 158 and 240 or 241.

▪Foreign Language VHCC offers French and Spanish 101‐102, 201‐202, as foreign language selections. The Virginia Community College System offers other foreign languages via distance formats.

▪Computer Literature Most Baccalaureate degree programs require competencies in computer fundamentals ITE 100, and/or computer applications ITE 115. Some college majors such as Business Information Systems require a programming language. ITP 112‐212. Students should consult with senior institution regarding computer background requirements.

Grades

“D” grades generally do not transfer.

A student must have a minimum 2.0 and some times a 2.5 Cumulative GPA to meet transfer entrance requirements. Due to large number of applicants at some colleges and universities, we recommend that transfer students be prepared with a competitive GPA, of at least a 3.0

Appalachian State University The Office of Admissions Appalachian State University A.S.U. Box 32004 Boone, North Carolina, 28608‐2004 http://www.admissions.appstate.edu/process/transfers.html Admissions Phone #: 828‐262‐2120 [email protected] Transfer admission is based on successfully meeting all requirements and space availability. Transfer students are admitted based on successful completion of 30 semester hours of college transferable credits. Technical, developmental and orientation courses are usually not transferable. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (as calculated by Appalachian) is required to be admitted. All grades earned in transferable courses, including repeated courses, are used in calculating the grade point average. (Transfer applicants with less than 30 semester hours must meet the admission requirements for freshmen.) Students less than 24 years of age who have not completed the high school Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) must earn either an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, or an Associate in Fine Arts degree or complete 6 semester hours in each of the following college level areas: English, math, science, and social sciences in order to meet Minimum Course Requirements (MCR). Two units of a second language will be required of applicants who are high school graduates of 2004 and beyond before being admissible. Transfer students applying for summer or fall admission are encouraged to apply 6‐12 months in advance of their intended entry date. Transfer applications for spring entry are processed in early October of the preceding semester. Applications are usually processed in approximately four weeks after the completed application is received. To make the application process easier, we encourage you to apply on‐line. Why? It's easy (the on‐line form has detailed instructions). It's safe (the data is encrypted). And applying on‐line also means a shorter review and notification process.

The application for admission for the Fall, Spring, and Summer 2009 terms will be available by September 3, 2008. If it is not possible for you to apply on‐line, please contact our office for further assistance. Admissions representatives are available weekdays (Monday‐Friday) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. Call 828‐262‐2120; e‐mail [email protected]; or contact us if you have any questions. How you apply‐‐on‐line or paper‐‐ will not have any bearing on the admission decision.

A complete application package includes the following items: • A completed online application. • A non‐refundable application fee of $50. • Official copy of high school transcripts that includes grades 9 ‐ 12. • SAT or ACT results submitted directly to Appalachian from the appropriate testing service (we recommend that all transfer applicants submit test scores but transfer students with fewer than 30 semester hours of transferable work must present SAT or ACT scores). • Official college transcripts submitted directly to Appalachian from each previously attended institution. This includes freshmen applicants who are taking (or have completed) college dual‐enrollment courses.
