With just 250 seats, the Club at Studio K will feature four-seat café tables, high-top tables, sofas, bar stools, and textiles designed in consultation with interior designer Vicente Wolf of Vicente Wolf Associates. The Club at Studio K builds on the 16-year legacy of the Kennedy Center’s Jazz Club, a series that for many years took place in the Terrace Gallery and has featured jazz luminaries such as Mulgrew Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, Andy Bey, and Cécile McLorin Salvant. In recent years, the Center’s curators began experimenting with the multi-genre, club-style format in the Terrace Gallery. In September 2019, coinciding with the opening of the REACH, Grammy award-winning pianist and composer Robert Glasper held a two-week performance residency in Studio K, showcasing four unique concept projects over the course of 12 performances and offering a first look at what visitors will experience when the Club at Studio K opens in 2020. “The Club at Studio K extends the mission of the REACH, offering the kinds of informal experiences that 21st-century audiences seek out. Think of the Club at Studio K as a creative ‘hang space,’ and a cultural incubator, where artists and audiences can break the fourth wall and commune with each other, collectively generating their experience,” commented Simone Eccleston, Director of Hip Hop and Contemporary Music at the Kennedy Center. - more - SCHEDULE OF CLUB AT STUDIO K PERFORMANCES Performance Dates Show Series January 16, 2020 Martin Amini Comedy 7:30 pm January 17, 2020 Stretch and Bobbito + the M19s Band: Hip Hop 7:30 & 9:30 pm “No Requests” Album Release Concert January 18, 2020 Jazzmeia Horn * Jazz 7:30 & 9:30 pm January 23, 2020 Elijah Jamal Balbed Quintet: The Karma Suite * Jazz 7:30 pm January 24, 2020 Hip Hop Karaoke Hip Hop 7:30 pm January 25, 2020 Kassa Overall’s “Blue Swamini” featuring Carmen Lundy Jazz 7:30 & 9:30 pm January 30, 2020 DJ Juan Atkins Techno KC Jukebox 7:30 pm January 31, 2020 Time Machine Roast Comedy 7:30 pm February 1, 2020 Broccoli City Festival Preview Hip Hop 7:30 pm February 6, 2020 Linda May Han Oh: Aventurine Jazz 7:30 pm February 7, 2020 ill Camille Hip Hop 7:30 & 9:30 pm February 8, 2020 Dulcé Sloan Comedy 7:30 pm February 13-14, 2020 Valentine’s Day Residency: Bilal Contemporary Music 7:30 & 9:30 pm February 27, 2020 Eric Hilton’s Ekhodom + Mason Bates KC Jukebox 7:30 pm February 28, 2020 Story District’s Funnier Than Fiction Comedy 7:30 pm February 29, 2020 Jason Palmer: Upward * Jazz 7:30 pm - more - March 5–7 , 2020 BGR!Fest Secret Shows Hip Hop/ 9:30 pm Contemporary Music March 11, 2020 DIRECT CURRENT: jaimie branch’s Fly or Die * Jazz 7:30 pm March 13 - 14, 2020 Jason Moran & the Bandwagon and Mo Willems: Jazz Doodle Jam! * Jazz 7:30 pm (March 13) and 11 am (March 14) March 14, 2020 DIRECT CURRENT: Camila Meza and the Nectar Orchestra * Jazz 7:30 pm March 19, 2020 Contemporary Music 7:30pm & 9:30pm March 20–21, 2020 Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah Jazz/Contemporary 7:30 & 9:30 pm Music March 26, 2020 Jeremy Kittel & Joshua Roman & the Verona Quartet: Whorls KC Jukebox 7:30 pm March 27, 2020 Mortified Comedy 7:30 pm April 2–3 , 2020 Made in Puerto Rico * Comedy 7:30 pm April 9, 2020 Clarence Penn, Penn Station Jazz 7:30 pm April 16–18 , 2020 Second City & Kennedy Center’s Jazz Comedy Experiment Jazz/Comedy 7:30 pm April 23, 2020 Rob Garza’s Dissolve KC Jukebox 7:30 pm April 24, 2020 Washington Improv Theater’s iMusical Comedy 7:30 pm April 25, 2020 Jason Moran’s Fats Waller Dance Party * Jazz 7:30 & 9:30 pm *Previously announced performance. The Roast will be "no holds barred" and everything and anything is fair game. The most recent Comedy Central Roast was with James Franco who was skewered and burned in 2013. When Two Become One: Sacramental Woes And Theological Anxiety In Medieval Representations Of Marriage Abstract This dissertation traces the long, winding, and problematic road along which marriage became a sacrament of the Church. In so doing, it identifies several key problems with marriage’s ability to fulfill the sacramental criteria laid out in Peter Lombard’s Sentences: that a sacrament must signify a specific form of divine grace, and that it must directly bring about the grace that it signifies. While, on the basis of Ephesians 5, theologians had no problem identifying the symbolic power of marriage with the spiritual union of Christ and the Church, they never fully succeeded in locating a form of effective grace, placing immense stress upon marriage’s status as a signifier. As a result, theologians and canonists found themselves unable to deal with several social aspects of marriage that threatened this symbolic capacity, namely concubinage and the remarriage of widows and widowers.

As this thesis examines the movements of subjective documentary between self-reflexivity and reflexivity, it argues against an understanding of reflexivity as something that is emotionally distanced from its object and thus relies on a strict separation from both the subject and what it documents, such as for instance the stable irony in many found footage or mock-documentaries.

  • Satire and Dignity
Satire and dignity Giselinde Kuipers Tis chapter examines satire from the target’s point of view: how to respond to satire without losing dignity? Te power of satire lies in its capacity to challenge dignity, which threatens social position, political legitimacy and individual well-being. Analysing concrete examples of satire, the essay reviews the merits, risks and limitations of possible responses: laugh, joke back, argue, retaliate, show anger, or withdraw. Te capacity to respond with dignity is not distrib- uted evenly: not everyone has the resources to do so. Moreover, there is not always consensus on what counts as a dignifed response. In today’s increasingly diverse and globalised societies, this makes satire increasingly contested and risky, but also an increasingly important domain for intercultural encounters and negotiations. “But he hasn’t got anything on!” a little child said. “Dear me, listen to that innocent voice,” the child’s father said, and people whispered to one another what the child had said. “But he’s got nothing on – a little child says he’s got nothing on.” “He’s really got nothing on!” everybody fnally shouted. Te emperor cringed, because he realized that they were right. But this is what he thought: “I have to see this through.” He walked ever more proudly, and the lords-in-waiting walked behind him, carrying the train that was not there at all. (Andersen 2005: 110) Tis is how we imagine satire: the sudden revelation of an awkward truth, expos- ing those in power as ridiculous – laughable. Te satirist is simultaneously heroic and somehow pure, like the child in Andersen’s tale: the only person not duped by the illusion, unimpressed by status.

  • Stand-Up Comedy As an Activity Type Ibukun Filani1
Israeli Journal of Humor Research Vol. 4 issue 1, June 2015 (73 – 97) Stand-up Comedy as an Activity Type Ibukun Filani1 Abstract The aim of this paper is to characterise stand-up performance as an activity type and explore ways through which the participants in a stand-up comedy performance, especially the stand-up comedians, manipulate the parameters of an activity type so as to achieve their interactional goals. Data comprised extracts from routines of randomly selected six Nigerian stand-up comedians in a recorded video. Analysed routines indicated that the participants’ goal and institutional identities influenced how they manipulated the parameters like allowable contribution and interpersonal maxims; for instance, the audience made use heckling to negotiate allowable contribution so as to indicate that their interactional goal was unfulfilled while stand-up comedians made use self-denigrating motif so as to elicit laughter and reduce the interactional distance between themselves and the audience. Key words: Stand-up Comedy, Activity Type, Participants, Audiences and Stand-up Comedians Introduction Humour has been described as a condition for humanity and part of human cultural universals (Oring, 2003). Attardo (2011, p. 135) notes that it is the technical term that covers “anything that is or maybe perceived as funny, amusing and laughable.” It is usually associated with laughter, gaiety, mirth and feelings of happiness. Since humour is primarily expressed through language, language scholars have approached it from linguistic perspectives. Schwarz (2010) opines that humour research is central in English linguistics while Attardo (1994) has shown that linguistic theories and approaches have been applied to the study of humour.
