Houchin posted four top-five finishes on vault and bars over two meets last weekend, at Elevate the Stage 2018 in Augusta, Ga. on Friday, March 2, and at the 28th Annual Masters Classic on Sunday, March 4 in Lincoln, Neb. Houchin started the weekend with a score of 9.875 in her season-debut on vault at Elevate to tie for second on the podium. She continued on to uneven bars at Elevate where she tied for second on the podium with a score of 9.90. At the Masters Classic in Lincoln, in just her second vault of the 2018 season, Houchin posted a near-perfect and career-high score of 9.975, receiving a perect 10 score from one judge, on vault to win the event title. She rounded out the weekend with a 9.875 to tie for fifth in the loaded field. The weekly award is Houchin’s first of the season, first event specialist of the week honor, and fifth Big Ten weekly honor overall. The award is Nebraska’s seventh this season, who is in the Big Ten driver’s seat with a perfect 5-0 conference record. Briannah Tsang from Penn State was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week while Nicole Biondi of Illinois and Lauren Bridgens of Penn State were named Big Ten Co-Freshmen of the Week.

NEBRASKA FANS TURN OUT IN CENTURY-HIGH NUMBERS While an official attendance record has not been tallied at the Bob Devaney Sports Center for women’s gymnastics, Husker fans may have set one this year when droves of red turned out for the opening meet on Jan. 20 vs. Rutgers. An outstanding performer on beam, she has won 10 individual event titles in her BALANCE BEAM career, seven of which coming on beam. Most notably, Breen earned second team All-America honors and CoSIDA Academic Gymnast Rank RQS High All-American and Academic All-District 7 honors in 2017. The two-time All-Big Ten honoree was the 2017 NCAA Lincoln Regional Williams T33 9.885 9.925 beam champion and was named to the Big Ten All-Championships Team in 2016 on uneven bars and in the all-around. Breen FLOOR EXERCISE contributed to the 2017 Big Ten Regular Season Team Championship earned by the Huskers in 2017 and earned a Big Ten Gymnast Rank RQS High Distinguished Scholar award in 2016 and 2017. Breen earned Academic All-Big Ten in 2016 and 2017, NACGC/W Scholastic All-American in 2015 and 2016, and was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll each semester of her Husker career. She provides energy, leadership and has been a force in Nebraska’s lineups for all four years. The Linden, Mich., Rae Balthazor, So., Illinois native helped the Huskers to a 2017 Big Ten Regular Season Championship and has steadily contributed in each event and in the all-around in her Husker career. She was named first team All-Big Ten and the Big Ten All-Championships Team for her work Bridget Hodan, Sr., Illinois on uneven bars and balance beam in 2016. A breakout year for Williams, she was the NCAA Iowa City Regional Co-Champion on Clair Kaji, So., Iowa balance beam and the Big Ten Co-Champion on balance beam in 2016. REIGNING B1G CHAMPIONS HOPE TO BE UNSTOPPABLE The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team earned a share of the 2017 Big Ten Regular Season Championship and returns nine letterwinners and two All-Americans from the championship season. The Husker squad selects a team motto each year, and in 2018 the gymnasts hope to #beuNstoppable.

BIG RED NATIONAL CONTENDER FOR YOUNGEST TEAM Nebraska boasts a young squad with seven true freshmen joining the action in 2018: Makayla Curtis (Savannah, Ga.); Anika Dujakovich (Lenexa, Kan.); Karley Hutchinson (Pearland, Texas); Torri Hutchinson (Pearland, Texas); Kynsee Roby (Windsor Heights, Iowa); Rachel Thompson (Lincoln, Neb.); and Megan Verceles Carr (Monte Sereno, Calif.). When comparing freshman as a portion of the entire squad to other squads in the country, the Huskers tie for second-youngest team with seven freshman on a 16-person team. Only Stanford has more freshman as a percentage of squad, with six freshman and 13 total team members. The Huskers are tied with Southeast Missouri with seven freshmen on a 16-gymnast squad.

ALL-AMERICANS CROUSE, BREEN BOLSTER NEBRASKA Nebraska earned three All-America honors in 2017 and lost former senior Ashley Lambert to graduation, but return senior Danielle Breen and junior Sienna Crouse. Breen earned second-team All-America honors in 2017 when she hit a 9.90 at the NCAA Semifinal to tie for sixth. Crouse returns after earning first-team All-America honors on vault in 2017. Crouse continues the Huskers’ tradition of having a first-team All-American every year since 2010. Crouse and Breen hope to take the Huskers back to the NCAA Super Six finals in 2018.

HUSKERS WELCOME FORMER OLYMPIAN CHRIS BROOKS TO COACHING STAFF Head Coach Dan Kendig announced the addition of former Olympian Chris Brooks to his coaching staff, appointing Brooks as an assistant coach in August, just days after Brooks announced his retirement from gymnastics competition. Brooks was named to the five-man men’s gymnastics Olympic team and competed in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The United States finished in fifth place overall at the 2016 Olympic Games, while Brooks finished 14th in the individual men’s all-around competition. Brooks was also an accomplished gymnast at the collegiate level. He was a four-year letterwinner at Oklahoma where he was a seven-time All-American. With the Sooners, Brooks led his team to an NCAA title in 2008, and a third-place team finish in 2009. He finished third on floor exercise as a senior in 2009.

NEBRASKA INKS FOUR TO 2018 SIGNING CLASS Head Coach Dan Kendig announced the signing of four gymnasts to the 2018 signing class. Abigail Johnston (Parkland Fla.), Sarah Hargrove (Hendersonville, N.C.), Megan Thompson (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Kaylee Quinn (Rockaway N.J.) have signed letters of intent with the Huskers and will join the roster for the 2019 season.
