Author’s Preface It is clear that we are in a moment of massive cultural upheaval around gender . Stereotypical gender performances dominate television, film, and music. Our culture is overwhelmed with limited visions of gender that create distressing and unsafe conditions for those who do not conform to dominant cultural norms––from sexual harassment and assault to the rise in murders of Black transgender women . But this is also a positive moment . New visions of gender and gender justice can be seen in the #MeToo movement, in the many new gender expressions in popular culture explored in this report, and in the increased number of people who are creating change in industries and across society, despite not conforming to narrow cultural stereotypes of who can be a “leader” in politics, business, or media.
