3 The Sanctuary Point & Districts Branch of the Bendigo Community Bank® held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 25th October, 2016 at St Georges Basin Country Club. This year the Board made the decision to change the time of the AGM to 5pm to allow shareholders, customers and partners to be able to attend without breaking into their normal day’s work or other activities. We had a guest speaker in the person of Ms. Susan Edwards, Senior Strategic Planner, Strategic Planning & Infrastructure Group of Shoalhaven City Council who spoke about the manner in which your Bank has been able to work with Council to achieve the projects which have been constructed on Council land. We were also fortunate to have a video taped interview with Pamela Barling, a former student of Vincentia High School who was one of our first recipients of the scholarships awarded. Many of our shareholders were able to attend, watch a video which showed all of the activities and resources we have been able to provide and view a document which showed the benefit to the community of some of our profits. The St. Georges Basin Country Club, their Board and CEO have been positive supporters of the Bank in many ways and we are grateful for that support. There were some changes to the Board during the past year and the current Chair, Veronica Husted thanked those outgoing Directors and warmly welcomed the incoming people. The Board works cooperatively together with the ongoing support of our Branch Manager, Keith Robinson who is so able assisted by our excellent staff. Based on the success of the change, we propose to continue with this format and hope see even more people at the 2017 Annual General Meeting. Veronica Husted – Chairperson

15 16 WAR WIDOW'S GUILD OF AUSTRALIA NSW LTD 70TH YEAR For the last 70 years there has been an organisation to look after the welfare and comfort of war widow's. Those from all wars who have lost husbands through being killed while on active duty during their service to their country, or later from war injuries or disease suffered during their service. Seventy years ago, it took many representations to the Government of the day to get any recognition for these young widow's and their young children. Many did not know of the death of their husbands until they did not receive their next allowance. At this time very few young women had trades as a depression had occurred in many countries of the world including Australia. One week after the death of a serviceman, on active duty, the government saw fit to cancel his allotment to his family resulting in many families facing poverty. Today through the efforts of some very strong women, war widows enjoy many benefits through the work of the Guild. The Guild was the inspiration of Mrs Jessie Vasey who became a widow herself with two sons to look after. Her husband Major-General George Vasey, saw terrible and prolonged fighting in Greece and Crete and later in New Guinea. He was always concerned about the wives and children of the men who did not return, as he felt the government of the day would not look after those left behind. Before he left on his last ill fated flight he had discussed with his wife, Jessie, how they could help the widows of Australian servicemen. On returning to rejoin the 6th Division in New Guinea his plane crashed in Northern Queensland. Shoalhaven District Guild meets in Legacy House, Nowra on the second Monday of each month. The Bay and Basin Guild Social Club which meets at the St Georges Basin Country Club on the fourth Monday of each month, both at 10.30am. To attend, war widows must hold a Gold Card and be a member of the Guild. This membership can be obtained by phoning the Head Office on 1800 451 615 for an enrolment form, or Nowra 4421 3251, Bay and Basin 4441 7094. The cost is $30 per year and you will also receive four copies of the Guild Digest each year. This publication keeps everyone in touch with their entitlements and many functions that are arranged throughout the year. To belong helps to ensure that governments do nothing to take away any of the conditions that were so tenaciously won. The local Guilds also have outings, guest speakers, provide friendship and are able to keep all members up to date on many aspects concerning everyday life. Each month there will be news from each group and more news of the War Widow' history and how it can be of help to its members.

It’s one of the world’s biggest human rights events and carries on a long tradition of people like you writing letters, signing petitions, and utilising all forms of social media, to right some of the world’s biggest wrongs. Across the world, people’s freedom is under threat. Activists are locked up just for expressing their opinions. Protestors are tortured and wrongfully imprisoned. Young girls are forced to get married. Our letters, words and actions will put pressure on authorities to take immediate action, so these people can be free to live their lives. Every year, we ask supporters to write two letters. One will be to the person in authority – it could be a king, president or head of police – who can help make change happen. And the other letter will be to the person (or group of people) we are fighting for, so they know we will never forget them. As testament to our success some 3.7 million Global Actions were taken last year. Look out for our Bay and Basin Amnesty Group. Regular meetings are held 3rd Wed of the month at the Huskisson Community Hall – 5.45pm.

Our current Helping Hands volunteers provide invaluable support to individuals through one to one links and group activities, including a centre based program and our community garden, and also support access to rehabilitation services and hospital or doctor's appointments. Helpings Hands is auspiced by the Schizophrenia Fellowship NSW Inc. The program is diverse offering a range of volunteering opportunities from gardening, engagement in sporting activities, tennis tournaments, art activities, providing mentorship, cooking, social support, driving, health promotion events, outings, maintenance tasks, fundraising and basic administrative duties. What’s been happening at St Georges Basin Public School Book Week Parade 2016 The students and teachers celebrated Book Week 2016 by wearing an assortment of costumes depicting their favourite book characters, fitting in with the theme, Australia Story Country. Spring Fair 2016 On the 16th September 2016 we held our annual Spring Fair. The day was a memorable one and was enjoyed by all. Some of the highlights were the jumping castles, disco, sponge throwing (rumour has it that some of the teachers may have gotten a little wet) and the many classroom stalls. The event was such a huge success due to our hard working P&C.

45 School Corner What we are doing at VINCENTIA PUBLIC SCHOOL FUN LEARNING My class and I went down to the equipment and made little huts for our paper cut-out gold miners. Our class have been learning about bushrangers and gold this term, and this was one of the fun activities that we have done to help us learn about gold and bushrangers. To start off we had to dig out a river so our miners could survive. Once we had dug out the river, through all the roots and sticks, we started to build our huts. Some were big, some were small, no two huts were even close to being the same. Next, we had to dig out our mines. To be honest with you I don’t think that I’m very good at digging out mines, so I gave up and let Nadia do it. I wasn’t surprised that she did a better job than me, because she is quite talented, even though it doesn’t take much talent to dig out a mine. Finally, we added some little extras, a little fire, a rocky gumnut path, and an awesome bridge. We also added some fake gold nuggets to the mine and we put our coloured-in-cut-outs of miners around the campsites to make it look a little more realistic. Then, we watched our hut flood because Mr Johnstone turned on the tap and the river overflowed! Mr Johnstone had promised to give a prize to the best made campsite. My group won the prize and I was very happy about it. I think the day was just about the funniest day of school ever! Lola S 4/5J CHOIR Vincentia Public School Choir went to the local nursing home called Coastal Waters. We sang four songs, “Never Grow Up”, “Fight Song”, “Titanium” and “Bright”. They enjoyed our performance and clapped and cheered to show their appreciation of our visit. After the performance we mingled with the residents. We were invited back to give a Christmas performance. When we got back to school, Mrs Briggs gave us all an ice-block. We enjoyed going to Coastal Waters and I am sure that they enjoyed our company.
