List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The breeds and types listed here are those that already have a Wikipedia article. For a more extensive list, see the List of all horse breeds in DAD-IS. The inbreeding coefficient (F), average relatedness (AR) and the increase in inbreeding by generation (ΔF) was 1.07%, 0.95% and 0.24%, respectively, for TP. The effective population size (Ne) based on ΔF was 195 and 164 for TP and RP, respectively. The effective number of founders (fe) was 1045 and 811 for TP and RP, respectively, that of ancestors (fa) was 156 and 113, and that of founder genomes (fg) was 105 and 66. -

Eighteen linear measurements were collected from 498 adult horses belonging to several different breeds, including Pantaneira (n = 52), Arabic (n = 28), Crioulo (n = 31), Mangalarga (n = 8), Quarter Horse (n = 97), Petiço (n = 9), Crossbred Horses (i.e., undetermined breeding; n = 170), and Mules (n = 74). These measurements were compared to similar measurements taken of English Thoroughbreds (n = 14) and Brazilian Equestrians (n = 15) in the city of Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grasso do Sul. -

Spassov, [email protected] Abstract: This study presents the first data on the genetic diversity of Holocene wild horses of the subgenus Equus (Equus) from the period before domestication (Early Neolithic and Early Bronze Age) in Bulgaria, and with this the first data on the genetic diversity of the extinct Holocene wild horses of the subgenus in Europe. The esultsr show the presence of the Q (in Equus germanicus from the Early Neolithic of NW Bulgaria) and G (G1) (in E. ferus from the E. Neolithic and the E. Bronze Age of Bulgaria) haplogroups. So far both haplogroups have been spread with high frequency in the Middle Asian horse breeds. This preliminary result gives ground to support the polyphyletic hypothesis for the origin of the domestic horse. All these data are interpreted in terms of the contemporary view of horse domestication and dissemination in Eurasia during the Holocene. Our results, though preliminary, can provide interesting information about the wild ancestors and the origin of domestic horses. -

We are already working on classlist changes for next season. In the last ten years, we have tried to maintain class numbers and just apply bandaids when issues crop up. One issue is balance – some classes (e.g. Division A, class 1: light breed stallions) are huge, and while a qualifier judge may split the class, the class remains crazy-large in the annual championship. Should division A have a different class list than the other divisions? Also, showers are sometimes not sure which breed classes to put their horses in and judges want to judge like against like – and not have Haflingers showing up in three different breed classes for example! Mustangs are another problem – the classlist we inherited specifies “all mustangs” should be shown in the “stock” division, even though Spanish mustangs may look more like Spanish horses than stock horses (i.e. -
