Mira is a shortened Latin term meaning, “brightest star,” and the awards were established by teachers to recognize students who demonstrate talents in the creative arts. Students are nominated by their instructors for this honor. The Foundation is thrilled to celebrate these artistic talents and gifts by honoring amazing high school seniors every year. Escambia County School District (ECSD) has one of the highest in-school arrest rates in the nation. • Nearly 90% of Florida school districts arrest children less frequently than ECSD, and Florida has the highest number of student arrests in the country. • School arrests increased by 11% in the district last school year, despite a 6% decline across the state. • Recent Florida Department of Juvenile Justice’s analysis of Florida schools found that three ECSD schools are among the top 25 for school arrests. • There have been 1,212 arrests in Escambia schools over the last four years. 2. Students are being arrested in school for childish misbehavior. Roughly 70% of ECSD arrests are for infractions that would be better ad- dressed with alternatives like civil citation. In Escambia County, only 2% of out-of-school youth arrests are for disorderly conduct (1 out of 50). However, Escambia arrests in county schools 24% of arrests are for disorderly conduct (nearly 1 out of 4). more students for disorderly conduct than 20 counties 3. Black students are arrested in schools at much higher rates combined. than white students. Black students make up only 35% of ECSD’s student population, but 77% of the students who arrested in school. Because of this disproportionality, the district is under investigation by the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education.     ECSD News Release: Escambia County's Take Stock in Children Class of 2021 Kim Stefansson Escambia County School District Public Relations Coordinator [email protected] 850-393-0539 (Cell) ECSD NEWS RELEASE June. 15, 2021 $260,000 in Scholarships Awarded to 2021 TSIC Graduates in Escambia County (FLA) Take Stock in Children (TSIC) and the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation recently awarded $260,000 in scholarships to Take Stock’s 2021 graduating seniors. Each of the 19 students received a 4-year tuition scholarship and a new laptop. The 2021 Take Stock in Children graduates are: Escambia High School: Briana Stack, Nevaeh Vaughn Northview High School: Maggie Amerson, Maille Kilcrease, Kenna Redmond Pensacola High School: IB student, Gabrielle Vines Pine Forest High School: Jayla Williams Tate High School: Hannah Thorne Booker T. Washington High: Paige Hotopp, Pedro Hernandez-Mendiola West Florida High: Halima Almanasrah, Kathryn Campbell, Vi Dang, Aireal English, Jean Hakaumotu, Selalina Hakaumotu, De’mayla Jenkins, Ja’vontae Manning, Sha’tee McDonald Take Stock in Children was established in 1995 as a non-profit organization in Florida that provides a unique opportunity for deserving low-income students to escape the cycle of poverty through education. Students are selected through a need-based application process in middle school and sign an agreement to maintain good grades, attendance, and citizenship and remain crime and drug free. Each student is matched with a volunteer community mentor and receives a college scholarship, college readiness skills, and hope for the future. The program’s comprehensive services continue through high school and include students’ transition into college and beyond.
