Remarkably, Superbad is not the album that should have been dropped in the year plus that has passed since we put Lil Boosie Bad Azz on the cover of F53, but that's only because you can't buy it on iTunes (or anywhere for that matter). It is, however, a mixtape that reaffirms our faith in "Mr. Wipe Me Down" as one of the most indispensable mouths of the south. Webbie continues his turn as the Raekwon to Boosie's Ghostface, or the other way around depending on when you started or stopped listening to New York rap, and it's good to see that some things never change, like Boosie's razor sharp fade and diamond bracelet that looks like a cast, as seen in the above video of Boosie jiggin'. Superbad: The Return of Boosie Bad Azz. Before it was released, Baton Rouge rapper Lil' Boosie explained that Superbad -- which on the spine adds the subtitle "The Return of Boosie Bad Azz" -- was recorded with the ladies in mind. He explained that women buy product and don't like any "static-ass-burnt CD," but skipping the sexism argument, it is worth noting that Superbad is glammed-out Boosie by design and not some major-label repackaging of a naturally gutter artist. When the opening "My Avenue" declares "All I want is my paper/I don't care what they say," the slick, Runners-produced track gives the album's motivation right off the top. The mixtape Boosie -- the darker and more vicious Boosie -- is still recognizable on hardcore tracks like "No Mercy" and "Pain" but the bitter "Bullsh*t" is more in line with the rest of the album as it turns disgust into a singalong chorus with a wicked hook. The sugary sweet ballad "Miss Kissin' on You" is the only true dud on this 16-track album which, with the help of some well-chosen guests and a handful of exciting B Real productions, always entertains. Even if it all comes off as something the equally whiney Webbie has done before, his Louisiana brother Boosie sounds like he wants it more, making this scrappy and crafty party album all the more magnetic.     May 27, 2015 The timing of Boosie’s release from prison couldn’t have been more perfectly timed with where pop-as-rap is currently situated. Atlanta (and by extension the South) runs the game, and entire generations of young rappers are excelling at doing what was, until this album release, their best “Lil Boosie impersonations.” On Touch Down 2 Cause Hell, the Louisiana rapper does just that, returning to “touch down” on his throne as one of the South’s founding rap fathers and kings of the style. In painting vivid portraits of urban realities over largely magnificent productions, the emcee has crafted an excellent release that also shows the street legend potentially taking his skills to another level of greatness. There has been a four-year delay between albums for the Baton Rouge, Louisiana born rhymer. Much of that is due to his five-year prison stint in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. He was serving time on federal charges of first-degree murder, possession with intent to distribute narcotics (Schedule II-Codeine, Schedule I-Ecstasy and Schedule I-Marijuana), "conspiracy to commit possession with intent to distribute narcotics" and "conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal institution." Though originally sentenced to eight years, his sentence was reduced to four and he was released in March 2014 (and is on probation until 2018). While in prison, Boosie stated in a 2013 interview that he had “about 500 songs [completed] at the moment,” the emcee was feeling like he was “making the best music [he’d] ever made.” This would appear on the surface to be a lofty claim by a performer attempting to retain relevance while incarcerated.
