CURRICULUM IN FOCUS

EXAM PREPARATION IN THE SENIOR YEARS

Senior exams are fast approaching and boys in Years 11 and 12 should begin preparing now. This can cause stress and anxiety for boys and their parents. Below are some steps that may help. 1. Make a plan and get organised Plan when and what to study in blocks of about 60 minutes. Include break times in the plan and mix up the subjects so that no one area is the focus for too long. Research shows this is more effective than setting aside whole days for each subject. Parents should be involved in this process both for their input and their understanding. 2. Put technology on hold Social media, such as Facebook or Instagram, is an enticing diversion that can break concentration and use up too much precious study time. Leave the phone turned off or in another room while studying. If using a computer for study, close social media apps and turn off notifications. The only exceptions the screen an hour before bed or turn on Night Shift (IOS devices). Lastly, turn should be regularly checking school emails or seeking help with a subject. all phone notification sounds and vibration off while sleeping to avoid being disturbed. 3. Eat well – and often 5. No dramas Intense study uses as much energy as jogging so make sure that you are eating well. Parents can help by providing regular healthy, high calorie snacks Stress and anxiety can be exhibited as irritability and other unexpected and meals. Drink a lot of water and avoid caffeinated energy drinks, which behaviours. The best way to avoid misunderstandings or upsets is for parents might seem like a good idea at the time but can make studying more difficult and boys to talk regularly about how things are going. Parents can also help and prevent you from sleeping later. their son keep a positive attitude by remaining positive themselves. 4. Sleep! Dr Colleen Spence Try to keep as close as possible to your regular sleep pattern, even if you sleep for fewer hours. If you feel so sleepy while studying, take a 20-minute power Assistant Head of School - Learning & Teaching nap by setting an alarm. Computer, iPad and phone screens emit blue light that prevents the production of the biochemical that induces sleep, so turn off

YEAR 12 BIOLOGY CLASSES VISIT THE ANU’S DEPARTMENT OF IMMUNOLOGY

During Term 4, the Year 12 Biology classes attended an excursion to the Department of Immunology at the Australian National University. The boys were given a guided tour of the current medical facilities used to create vaccines and cures for a variety of common disorders. The tour began with a CALLtalk from FOR one ofADVERTISING the lecturers in the Department – who discussed the current research ventures being undertaken at the University. We were then provided THEwith MARISTIAN a tour of the laboratory working on a cure for Multiple Sclerosis, which was insightful and eye-opening for the students. During this time, researchers shared their knowledge and understanding of what they are currently trying to achieve and the work they have done towards finding a cure.

The group was then escorted to the Malaria vaccine laboratory where students got to witness first-hand red blood cells infected with malaria under a microscope. They also learnt how the University breeds malaria to work on a vaccine for a virus that is virulent and difficult to treat. As the Year 12 students were studying immunology at the time, it was a wonderful and rewarding experience that allowed the students to see real world applications of the theory they had been studying. It also enabled students an inside look into a Department that they themselves may one day be a part of.

SRI LANKA IMMERSION YEAR 11 PHYSICS STUDENTS

During the September holidays, eight students (Sam Brearley, Max Beaumont, VISIT ANSTO Connor Frew, Jordan Krizan, Josh Martin, Joseph Sergi, Sam Sharkey and Joseph Sidorko) accompanied by Ms Weijers and Mr Hawes travelled to Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka to participate in the Immersion.

The days were spent engaging with the children at St Mary’s Homework Centre and the local primary schools. It was a wonderful time with plenty of games, laughter and smiles. Being with the young people of Kalpitiya was the highlight for our boys, especially the final concert where we were entertained by talented dancers of all ages.

Many thanks to Brs Lal and Navinda, and Chathu for their hospitality and all of the work they did behind the scenes to make this such an amazing experience.

Year 11 Physics students attended an educational excursion at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas Heights on Wednesday 11 October. The program included a lecture on the role of the site’s nuclear reactor in providing radioisotopes for medical use and concluded with a tour visit showcasing some of the best nuclear research facilities in Australia.

The students are currently studying nuclear energy and this visit provided them with the opportunity to connect the theoretical concepts with their practical applications. It was also a platform to extend their knowledge about available career pathways in the field of nuclear science.

This included interactive activities, personal sharing, drama, games, small groups and a liturgy. We are grateful for the Senior students who talked about their Immersions, House service and to Deepa Obed from Samaritans Purse who spoke about Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal.

The Year 9 Brothers Together Day was held on Wednesday last week and included addresses by Sam Clear and Eric Bailey, as well as Youth Ministry sessions from the Year 11 CSYMA students on the ‘Marist Pillar of Presence’. It was a fantastic day of Faith Formation for the Year 9 boys and a fine example of peer to peer ministry inspired by CSYMA, drawing the students into full participation within the wider Australian church.
