C A R N I V A L 11 July 2015 Major Carnival Sponsors Free Programme EGP www.leightoncarnival.co.uk A message from the Carnival Committee Chairman It’s Carnival time again. A year’s work by the Carnival Committee draws together and we hope that the day is bigger and better than Carnivals before. We are grateful for all the local businesses, groups and organisations that support us year after year. Without this support the Carnival could not happen. Our aim, in our constitution, is “To foster community spirit by promoting each year a Carnival for the benefit of all Leighton- Linslade residents and the general public at large. To involve all local organisations wishing to participate thereby helping to harmonise the community spirit.” I hope that you feel that we are achieving this. At the end of Carnival we distribute the profits made to groups and organisations nominated (see the form at the back of this programme). The 2014 groups are detailed on page 7 - please give generously when you see a collection bucket or tin to help make this year’s total better than 2014. Finally, please put Saturday 9th July 2016 in your diary for Carnival 2016. Don’t forget to let us have your ideas for the 2016 theme by 31st July, to be balloted on our website in August. Cheque Presentation evening Page 6 Page 7 www.leightoncarnival.co.uk www.leightoncarnival.co.uk The Leighton Linslade Cancer Support Group has always enjoyed participating in the Leighton Carnival. We have found the public support for our town to be generous and they have always taken a keen interest in our activities. We are a local group whose objective is to make life for our members, all of whom are somewhere along their Cancer journey, more enjoyable and fulfilling. At present we have 36 members. We were surprised and delighted to have been nominated for a grant and the money will be put to good use. It will be put towards the cost of taking some of our members out to an Afternoon Tea at Dobbies Garden Centre. This can be seen in the attached photograph. Many thanks and good luck with the 2015 Carnival. Page 8 Page 9 www.leightoncarnival.co.uk www.leightoncarnival.co.uk 2014 Carnival winners have put the donation and prize money towards new play equipment for Beaudesert Lower School. For the past 2 years we have been trying to raise £20,000 to equip the school with various new adventure and learning apparatus. Also, as this is Year of the Arts the PTA have funded an illustrator to come into the school and hold a workshop for each year group. We found entering the carnival a great experience. From starting out with idea and design meetings, to getting all the children involved with class projects to decorate the float, getting the float prepared, and then to win on our first attempt was great reward for all the hard work the PTA, staff and children all put in. To date, we have so far raised, £16,500 and hope to shortly have some fantastic new equipment in place not only for the school now but future generations too. The school will be looking to improve even further on their recent “Good” OFSTED report. We are very much looking forward to defending our title this year! Leighton Buzzard LU7 4QE The cheque we received was 01525 850659 a generous and welcome 077 10 46 3597 donation to our service. email:[email protected] Grants and donations are vital to Buzzer Buses as they help us continue to provide our door to door transport service for the elderly, disabled, incapacitated and socially excluded within our community. We can use the Carnival Committee grant for general running costs or put it towards a specific project, such as the purchase of specialist equipment, which would improve our service. Either way, all donations are gratefully accepted and it is always pleasing to receive acknowledgement from another organization in our community that works for the benefit of people who live and work locally. This is why all contributions to Buzzer Buses are always so valued because every amount donated enables us to keep our service operating within the local community. Like the Carnival Committee, our work goes on all year round and is hopefully of benefit to the town and its population. We hope that Carnival 2015 will be a great success for everybody involved and that people throughout Leighton- Linslade continue to enjoy the rewards it brings to our town. Page 12 Page 13 www.leightoncarnival.co.uk www.leightoncarnival.co.uk Creating Partnerships – Changing Lives Dogs for the Disabled is a pioneering charity which focuses on training assistance dogs for children and adults with physical disabilities, and families with a child who has autism. 2014 marks our tenth anniversary of supporting our Children’s Teams. Our Autism Service (started in 2008) spurred an additional advisory service – PAWS (Parents, Autism Workshops & Support). This provides honest and practical advice to parents who perhaps do not qualify for our Autism Service, but still would like to explore the benefits of having a dog Through practical tasks our dogs offer freedom and independence, but in addition an assistance dog becomes a reason to go out, giving a new found confidence that opens doors to fresh opportunities including friendships, hobbies, education and even careers. The partnerships we create between people with disabilities and dogs are life-changing.
