- Advertisement - A life’s work that lives on... Legendary rose breeder David C. H. Austin dies at 92 January 4, 2019 David C.H. Austin, founder and hybridizer emeritus of David Austin Roses Ltd. in Albrighton, England, died Dec. 18, 2018 at his Shropshire home. He was 92. His death was announced by his son, David J.C. Austin, managing director of the company since 1993. A Distinguished Career in Roses In 2007, Mr. Austin was appointed Officer of the Order of British Empire in the Queen’s birthday honors list for services to horticulture. On receiving the award, he said, “Every day, I marvel at my good fortune to have been able to make a life out of breeding roses. It is always a great satisfaction to see the pleasure gardeners and rose lovers worldwide take in my roses.” In that same year, Mr. Austin introduced his 200th English Rose at the Chelsea Flower Show, the beautiful deep crimson — 1 / 2 and fragrant — ‘Munstead Wood.’ English Roses have won many awards around the world for their garden performance as shrubs or as climbers, as well as for fragrance, while David Austin Roses Ltd. has won dozens of gold medals for its exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show and the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. In 2009, David Austin’s rose ‘Graham Thomas’ received the highest accolade in the rose world when it was voted the World’s Favorite Rose by the World Federation of Rose Societies and was inducted into the society’s ‘Rose Hall of Fame.’ David C. H. Austin was also recipient of many personal awards, including the Victoria Medal of Honour from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2003 for his services to horticulture, and he was honored as the 2010 ‘Great Rosarian of the World’ by The Huntington Library, Art Collection and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA, and New York’s Manhattan Rose Society. David C.H. Austin will be remembered as the creator of English Roses. For more than 50 years, he routinely raised the bar of rose breeding as he and his team literally revolutionized the world of garden roses. Today, the enterprise he founded has nurseries on five continents and offers English Roses to gardeners in 30 countries through mail-order, online and garden center sales. The family-owned company continues to be guided by Mr. Austin’s passion for roses with beauty and charm, the hallmark of all David Austin English Roses. It’s a legacy the entire David Austin team is proud to honor, as they carry forward the work of their founder, patriarch and one of history’s singular rose hybridizers. David C. H. Austin was an active rose breeder practically his entire adult life. He and his late wife, Pat, an accomplished sculptress, had three children, Claire, David and James, and eight grandchildren. The beautiful sculptures that grace Mr. Austin’s Albrighton rose garden were created by Mrs. Austin. Mr. Austin named the exquisite copper-colored English Rose ‘Pat Austin’ in her honor. This whirlwind weekend began with the Board Meeting on Rose Arrangement Workshop———– 10 Thursday, taking care of important ARS business. Following that was the Rose Show, Rose Arrangement School————— 11 held at the Rose Center in Tyler. This time, we didn’t bring any roses, since it was the Coming Events/Rose Show Dates—— 11 middle of October. Although that month was particularly dry, the timing of our blooms was off, and we didn’t have any worthy specimens. Old Garden Roses: The National Rose Show was rather small, although there were some beautiful What Are They?—–—————– 12-16 blooms, and some varieties we hadn’t seen before. After judging, we volunteered to guide Hybrid Gallicas——— 12-13 Damasks—————– 13-14 the busloads of visitors around the show. It turned out there weren’t that many on Friday, Albas——————— 14 but we did manage to greet a few nice folks.

Summer 2018 Volume 57:2 District Director’s Report By Ralph Stream, Master Rosarian 352-591-4474, [email protected] It’s now time to get a short rest after all our spring activities. I know the Jacksonville Mini National event team is sure glad it is over and done. We did have a fun weekend and without a hitch as far as I could see. Everyone at the convention had big smiles, a sure sign of their approval. Congratulations to all show winners. Our DSD Awards for the Silver Honor Medal, Outstanding CRs and Judges (see pictures and detail within) were presented at this Spring Mini National, five months earlier than usual. I want to thank our Awards committee for having these awards ready this early. Since we usually have these awards presentations in the Fall, there In This Issue was little time for my team to pull this off. Great job folks! Director’s Report 1 I would like to remind everyone about our DSD commitment to Personal Inforamation Form 3 raise funds for the upgrades to our DSD Memorial Rose Garden in Recognizing Special People 4 Celebrating Special Roses 6 Shreveport. So far only a few have responded with the suggested $50.00 400 Million New Roses 7 donation. Of course, any amount is greatly appreciated. We have one Horticulture Judges 8 large donation that came by way of an Honorarium. The Boca Grand Consulting Rosarians 9 Garden Club sent $500 to support this project, in honor of a two-day Queens of the Show 10 Arrangement Awards 11 program given by Phil Paul.

The rose societies in Australia continue to excite me. It is fantastic to see the enthusiasm of new members mixing with the knowledge and support of members with long histories in rose societies. As a regular speaker at garden clubs, I see many clubs who appear afraid of new ideas, technologies, and sociological changes. Rose societies seem to embrace these challenges, adapting like a rose bush does to climatic changes. This gives me unbridalled confidence that roses have a great future in Australia.
