HALYNA PETRYSHYN*, OLHA KRYVORUCHKO**, HALYNA LUKASHCHUK*, STEPAN TUPIS’* THE PARK IN ST. YURI (ST. GEORGE) SQUARE – THE JEWEL IN THE EMERALD NECKLACE OF THE CITY OF LVIV SKWER NA PLACU ŚW. JURY – KLEJNOT W SZMARAGDOWYM NASZYJNIKU LWOWA Abstract The most valuable parks in Lviv were designed by the famous city gardener Arnold Röhring, who managed to combine in the art of landscape design the different styles of the turn of 20th century. If the large parks of the city are under state protection, the smaller ones designed as public gardens, boulevards, gardens near the villas are constantly being rebuilt and destroyed. The results of the study of the park in St. Yuri Square in Lviv give grounds for considering this park an authentic monument of landscape art of the end of the 19th century, where its compositional structure and state of rare old-growth species of trees and shrubs are well preserved. Keywords: Lviv parks, landscape design, public gardens, Arnold Röhring Streszczenie Najcenniejsze parki we Lwowie zostały zaprojektowane przez słynnego ogrodnika miejskiego Arnol- da Röhringa, któremu udało się połączyć w sztuce projektowania krajobrazu różne style przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Jeśli duże parki miasta są pod ochroną państwa, mniejsze, zaprojektowane jako ogrody pu- bliczne, skwery, bulwary, ogrody w pobliżu willi, stale są przebudowane i niszczone. Badania skweru na placu św. Jury we Lwowie dają podstawy do uznania go autentycznym zabytkiem sztuki krajobrazowej z końca XIX wieku, w którym struktura kompozycyjna i stan starodrzewu rzadkich gatunków są dobrze zachowane. The article is dedicated to basic methods of scientific research of cemeteries, peculiarities of measurement and inventory research of monuments at Christian cemeteries. The tomb of the Röhring family, which was found on the Lychakiv cemetery in Lviv during the research, is described. Key words: cemetery, inventory, tombstones, tomb. 1. Introduction One of the major carriers of culture for every nation is a cemetery. Tombstones are unique historical sources that contain information on burial rituals, artistic and spiritual traditions of a society. They remind us of famous people and inform about historical events, construction, cultural and artistic features of different periods; they connect the past, the present and the future; they reflect a mentality, customs and traditions, and of course, people's faith. In memorial sculptures of cemeteries the artistic talent of craftsmen is vividly present, as well as regional traditions of craft schools, time tendencies and tastes of individual authors. Moreover, the history of the city cemetery displays an authentic cultural boundary where the unique identity of each community can be seen. Typical of architectural and historical monuments of cemeteries today is a detailed research and inventory work carried out with the aim to stop the process of destruction of valuable historical architectural environment.

TEKA 2019, Nr 1 Komisji Architektury, Urbanistyki i Studiów Krajobrazowych Oddział Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Lublinie The phenomenon of the military cemetery in Galicia Olena stasyuk https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2986-6321 [email protected] Department of Architecture and Conservation, «Lviv Polytechnic» National University Abstract: The article analyzes the main military cemeteries found in Galicia, their types, forms, ideological affiliation and state of preservation. Preventive measures for the preservation of historic military cemeteries are proposed and the possi- bility of forming new ones is considered. Key words: conservation, memorial monuments, natural stone, military cemetery Formulation of the problem Historic cemeteries are an integral part of the cultural landscape of each city or town, a testament to the ideolo- gy and spiritual life of its time. Military cemeteries may not be in every settlement, but they very clearly capture their time, history, and ideology – the extremely important points for the country and society. The first military cemeteries appeared in Galicia during the First World War. That is, in the early twentieth century. The twentieth century was further marked by a series of events which replenished the number of mil- itary cemeteries. These are the Second World War and the struggle for the Ukrainian state. Regardless of the status of the cemetery, there are no objects in the absolutely perfect state in Ukraine. Each cemetery requires continuous care and ordering. Military cemeteries are additionally overlaid with an ideological component that complicates their existence. And today we again have a war in our country. So the dead heroes. And we are already facing the problem of military cemeteries, which we will have to solve… Analysis of recent research and publications Interesting and writing about historical cemeteries in Ukraine began in the nineties.
