  • “Rapper's Delight”
1 “Rapper’s Delight” From Genre-less to New Genre I was approached in ’77. A gentleman walked up to me and said, “We can put what you’re doing on a record.” I would have to admit that I was blind. I didn’t think that somebody else would want to hear a record re-recorded onto another record with talking on it. I didn’t think it would reach the masses like that. I didn’t see it. I knew of all the crews that had any sort of juice and power, or that was drawing crowds. So here it is two years later and I hear, “To the hip-hop, to the bang to the boogie,” and it’s not Bam, Herc, Breakout, AJ. Who is this?1 DJ Grandmaster Flash I did not think it was conceivable that there would be such thing as a hip-hop record. I could not see it. I’m like, record? Fuck, how you gon’ put hip-hop onto a record? ’Cause it was a whole gig, you know? How you gon’ put three hours on a record? Bam! They made “Rapper’s Delight.” And the ironic twist is not how long that record was, but how short it was. I’m thinking, “Man, they cut that shit down to fifteen minutes?” It was a miracle.2 MC Chuck D [“Rapper’s Delight”] is a disco record with rapping on it. So we could do that. We were trying to make a buck.3 Richard Taninbaum (percussion) As early as May of 1979, Billboard magazine noted the growing popularity of “rapping DJs” performing live for clubgoers at New York City’s black discos.4 But it was not until September of the same year that the trend gar- nered widespread attention, with the release of the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” a fifteen-minute track powered by humorous party rhymes and a relentlessly funky bass line that took the country by storm and introduced a national audience to rap.

Up until then he was an average teenaged boy with typical dreams and aspirations. He wanted a driver’s license, he wanted to learn to be a fighter jet pilot and he wanted a sick hot girlfriend to show off. He was the only child of a very successful upper middle class family. His father, William, was a civil engineer specializing in roads and bridges, requiring extended travel. Samuel’s mother was a family law attorney. It was the ideal suburban family, but like all families that appear solid to the outside world, the reality was a little different. Shortly after the start of the New Year, Samuel’s mother ran off with another man, leaving behind divorce papers. The note she left with the papers stated she never wanted to have anything to do with her husband William or Samuel ever again.

In the beginning, the story goes, disco was gay: Gay dancers went to gay clubs, celebrated their newly liberated status by dancing with other men, and discovered a vicarious voice in the form of disco’s soul and gospel-oriented divas. Received wisdom has it that straights, having played no part in this embryonic moment, co-opted the culture after they cottoned onto its chic status and potential profitability.

She has become known locally for her powerful, bluesy voice and energetic live performances. Though a rock and blues singer at heart, Davina has displayed her versatility in a variety of genres, having played in many live situations as a front woman for cover bands and acoustic duos, and at clubs, parties and corportate events. She has also performed back-up vocals for Ray Parker Jr. and Cheryl Lynn, and has performed live on Japanese radio stations. Davina began focusing on her original material, and released her first album, The Blazing Heart, in May 2008. The EP highlighted Davina's ability to merge rock, blues and funk, calling her approach "powerhouse rock n' roll soul". Songs from the EP, particularly "Making Love To Your Girlfriend", lead to accolades from the Billboard Song Contest and VH-1 Song of the Year Contest, among others. Davina supported the release with an acoustic tour of the Los Angeles area. Davina released the digital single "Osaka Boys" two years later, and the track is featured on her first full-length album, Black Rock Warrior Queen, released November 2011. "Osaka Boys" has become an audience favorite at her live shows, including those at Hard Rock Cafe Osaka, where she plays regularly with her stellar lineup of support musicians.

  • Black Women's Music Database
By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. This project maps leading Black women artists in multiple genres of music, including gospel, blues, classical, jazz, R & B, soul, opera, theater, rock-n-roll, disco, hip hop, salsa, Afro- beat, bossa nova, soka, and more. Study of African American music is now well established. Beginning with publications like The Music of Black Americans by Eileen Southern (1971) and African American Music by Mellonee Burnim and Portia Maultsby (2006),
