Trial Months=7 Days=0 Recruitment Status of Not Applicable Trial (Global) Recruitment Status of Completed Trial (India) Publication Details Joseph T, Beevi A. Effectiveness of a Structured Teaching Program on Knowledge and Practice Regarding Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among Adolescents in Selected Schools of Kerala, India. International Journal of Innovative Research Development 2016 Nov; 5(13) p.156-64. ISSN 2278 –0211 (Online) Available from: http://www. ijird.com /index.php/ijird/article/view/106690 Brief Summary The study primarily intended to study whether type 2 DM can be prevented or delayed in the public population by taking a proactive step like motivating the adolescents to adopt a healthy lifestyle by educating them about T2DM, its risk factors, signs and symptoms, management, complications and possible prevention by adopting a healthy lifestyle. This was a randomized, controlled, parallel group, multicenter trial comparing the effectiveness of an educational intervention related to prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among 975 healthy adolescent subjects of both genders who have no Diabetes Mellitus at the time of study. The study was conducted among all students studying in IXth standard of 18 selected schools from urban and rural areas of two educational districts of central Kerala state of India. The variables knowledge about T2DM and the prevailing lifestyle was measured using reliability tested validated questionnaire and a lifestyle practice inventory in both groups (pretest). The educational intervention was administered to the experimental group alone after the pretest. The primary outcome variable was being the gain in knowledge scores and change in lifestyle including food habits and activity patterns were measured one month after the intervention (posttest) using the same tool to both groups. The outcome variables were compared between both the groups and between the pretest and posttest values for significant changes at p<0.05 level. The results indicated knowledge about T2DM was average for both groups; risk factors (87.7%) were best known and complications (43.53%) were least known. Rural subjects were better informed than urban; statistical difference was highly significant (p<0.001).Comparison of knowledge between both groups showed significant (p<0.002) gain in knowledge scores after intervention among experimental group compared to control group without intervention. Lifestyle showed significant difference (p<0.001) on unhealthy food habits, healthy activities and sedentary activities during holidays among subjects in experimental group after intervention. Healthy food habits and sedentary activities on week days remained stable. Age, gender & paternal T2DM were associated with the knowledge in control group; with age alone in experimental group. Lifestyle had association with income, religion and maternal occupation in experimental group and birth order in control group. WHR values reduced significantly (p<0.001) in experimental group after intervention; with control group from rural area showing similar result (p<0.001). To conclude, educational intervention could bring significant changes in knowledge and lifestyle in terms of unhealthy food habits and sedentary activities among adolescent school children as a preventive measure against T2DM in accordance with Health Belief model
