2017 Cabernet Franc Napa Valley Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus 2017 Cabernet Franc Napa Valley Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus The Wine The Chappellet Cabernet Franc is a traditional Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Franc at its base. The original vines were planted in 1989, making Cabernet Franc a relatively new addition to Pritchard Hill. This variety thrives on the hill’s volcanic soils, where conditions are ideal for developing ripe, concentrated flavors. The wine was bottled after spending 22 months in French Oak barrels (60% new). Growing Season & Harvest After five years of drought, the 2017 growing season started off with record- setting rainfalls that replenished the vines and pushed the growing season to a later-than-normal start. In the vineyards, we applied thoughtful canopy management techniques to achieve balanced crops with just the right amount of sunlight on the fruit. Moderately warm temperatures in late May led to a perfectly timed bloom and fruit set. With rising temperatures in the last week of August, the grapes were able to develop ideal ripeness, resulting in wines with lovely colors and aromatics accompanied by beautifully concentrated flavors. Tasting Notes One of the treasures of the Chappellet portfolio, this complex and concentrated Cabernet Franc showcases how beautifully this grape expresses itself when grown on the high-mountain slopes of Pritchard Hill. Offering a mosaic of fruit, herb and spice notes, it displays aromas of dark cherry, cassis, olive and sage, as well as oak-inspired hints of vanilla, nutmeg Wine Statistics and clove. On the palate it is supple and elegant, with plush tannins and 25.0°- 27.0° Brix at Harvest luxurious flavors of black cherry, chocolate, graphite, cedar and roasted 14.5% Alcohol coffee gliding to a long, complex finish. Such wines are characterised by undesirable sensory characters described as smoky, burnt, ash, smoky bacon, medicinal and ashtray. This review summarises the knowledge about the composition of smoke from forest and grass fires, describes relationships between smoke exposure of vineyards and smoke taint in wine, and outlines strategies for managing and reducing the risk to producing smoke-affected wines. The sensitivity of grapes and vines at different phenological stages to the uptake of contaminants from smoke, especially smoke-derived volatile phenols, is outlined, and the pathways for entry and metabolic transformation of volatile phenols are discussed. The potential for translocation of phenolic contaminants within the grapevine and the differences in uptake of smoke contaminants of different grape cultivars are also discussed, along with preliminary work on dose/response relationships regarding concentration and duration of exposure and subsequent expression of smoke taint in wine. The chemical basis of smoke taint in wine is described, and the relationship between volatile phenols from combustion of wood/lignin and their glycosides, and sensory panel ratings of smoke attributes in affected wines is discussed.

    2018 Petit Verdot Napa Valley Vintage Notes The 2018 vintage proved nearly ideal. Ample winter rains were followed by lots of spring and early summer sunshine. Bud break and flowering were slightly later than usual, but coincided with ideal weather conditions for healthy fruit set. Summer brought more balance in the form of sunshine and cooling marine influences at night. The mild summer was followed by an equally ideal fall; allowing fruit to ripen with ample flavor and complexity with moderate sugar levels. Vineyard Notes This wine is a blend from two distinctive vineyards; Juliana Vineyard in the northeast region of the Napa Valley, and York Creek Vineyard on Spring Mountain in northwestern Napa Valley. Tasting Notes On the nose this wine reveals hallmark characteristics of Petit Verdot; jasmine, white blossoms and blue fruit. The palate is graciously endowed with flavors of blueberry cobbler, espresso, chocolate and vanilla. The grippy tannin structure of Petit Verdot lends it as a powerful blending component in many Bordeaux style wines. Vanilla, caramel, and mocha are all elements that interplay nicely with the rich, concentrated fruit. This is always an advantage, for it gets everything starting uniformly on the right path. The set was smaller than 2012. At the end of June we saw a few days of our only 100 degree weather for the year, then back to ideal growing conditions until we wanted to pick. Some white varietals started to come in the first part of August, making it one of the earliest harvests in recent history. Cabernet Sauvignon was the latest. In September the weather began its fall cooling cycle, and a few light showers slowed the growing pattern till October when we picked most of our Cabernet Family grapes. A long, beautiful growing season for Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyards This vineyard is part of my 39 year history in the Napa Valley. I knew its early stewards Bob and Alex Phillips who bought the vineyard in 1959, and made it one of Napa Valley’s stars in the 80s and 90s. The vineyard was first planted in 1884, and is a perfect site for Bordeaux varietals. I work with Bruce Phillips now in block 3D, which is all Petit Verdot. In a nutshell, this is a magi- cal wine when making blends – it can add so much, and in some years, stands alone. Some place and something special here. Winemaking The 2013 Vine Hill Petit Verdot was a first shot at this fruit and we had so little of it that it was all fermented in a single large T-bin.

RED GRAPE VARIETIES ALICANTE BOUSHET Alicante Bouschet is a wine grape variety that has been widely cultivated since 1866. It is a cross of Grenache with Petit Bouschet (itself a cross of the very old variety Teinturier du Cher and Aramon). Alicante is a teinturier, a grape with red flesh. It is the only teinturier grape that belongs to the Vitis vinifera family. It’s deep color makes it useful for blending with light red wine. It was planted heavily during Prohibition in California for export to the East Coast. This grape makes a dry, dark, full bodied wine. BARBERA Barbera is believed to have originated in the hills of Monferrato in central Piemonte, Italy where it has been known from the thirteenth century. In California, Barbera is one of the most successful of the Piemontese grapes to be adapted in the state, with over 8000 acres of plantings. This grape produces a red, deep colored, full bodied wine and produces a dry somewhat tannic wine that ages well and softens with time. When young, the wines offer a very intense aroma of fresh red and blackberries. In the lightest versions notes of cherries, raspberries and blueberries and with notes of blackberry and black cherries in wines made of more ripe grapes. Oaking this wine provides for increased complexity, aging potential, and hints of vanilla notes. BLACK MALVASIA The Malvasia family of grapes are of ancient origin, most likely originating in Greece, but now grown in many of the winemaking regions of the world.
