He then signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Denver Broncos, and spent two seasons with the team, which included a win in Super Bowl 50. Anunike, who also spent one season on the New York Jets practice squad, joined the Buckeyes in 2017. “This is probably one of the best decisions I could have ever made to come to Ohio State and to become literally Larry Johnson’s understudy,” Anunike told Cleveland.com in December. “That’s basically what my position is, and I’m blessed by the best. To be in a position to learn from arguably the greatest D-line coach to ever coach the game.” With Johnson off recruiting during the summer months, Anunike was notably tasked with the continued development of the defensive linemen. “I got these guys in the classroom, and I’m teaching them all the fundamentals,” Anunike said.

    Broncos notes: Paradis candidate for new contract By Mike Klis 9 News March 12, 2018 As it turned out, the first day of NFL free-agent negotiations became little more than a house-cleaning project for the Broncos. The Broncos extended second-round, $2.914 million tenders to restricted free agents Matt Paradis, the team’s starting center, and part-time starting outside linebacker Shaq Barrett. It would be a surprise if the Broncos didn’t engage in long-term contract negotiations with Paradis before the start of the regular season, as the team did with three previous restricted free agents: C.J. Anderson, Brandon Marshall and Brandon McManus. Paradis has delivered every offensive snap the past three years. Barrett may have to keep proving himself. He had 5.5 sacks in a part-time role in 2015, but slipped to 1.5 sacks in 2016 before rebounding with 4.0 sacks last season. The Broncos also said goodbye to No. 3 receiver and core special teamer Bennie Fowler III by not extending a low tender to the restricted free agent. Fowler is now an unrestricted free agent. It’s unclear whether the Broncos will attempt to re-sign another receiver-special teamer, Cody Latimer, before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday. The Broncos also tendered one-year, minimum-salaried contracts to all their exclusive rights free agents: Receiver/returner Jordan Taylor, long snapper Casey Kreiter, linebackers Zaire Anderson, Jerrol Garcia- Williams and Joseph Jones and offensive tackle Elijah Wilkinson.     Broncos DE Derek Wolfe leaned on wife’s support during recovery from neck surgery By Ryan O’Halloran Denver Post Sept. 9, 2018 As Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe prepared for neck surgery last December, his right arm numb because of a pinched nerve that made it difficult for him to get out of bed and prevented him from opening a door (let alone play football) he and his wife, Abigail, had a brief conversation. “We thought for a second that if it didn’t work, we should consider retirement,” Abigail said. “But that was a whisper. He was just really hopeful the whole time this wasn’t going to be the end.” Later that day, the surgery was a success. Weeks later, Derek began training. And nearly nine months later, he’ll make his regular season return when the Broncos host Seattle on Sunday. Wolfe hopes the whisper of retirement turns into a roar of a comeback, a return to the player who can defend the run and provide an interior pass-rush presence; back to the player who had 2 1/2 sacks during the Broncos’ Super Bowl run in 2015. “The ups and downs in my life in general have prepared me for this game,” Wolfe said at his locker earlier in the week. “Football teaches you to be consistent and not get too high or too low.” That mindset has helped Wolfe deal with the ups (six sacks as a rookie in 2012 and signing a four-year contract in 2016) and downs (a bruised spinal cord injury in 2013, a four-game performance-enhancing drug suspension in 2015 and last year’s neck surgery).

    June 10, 2020 Re: Amash-Pressley Ending Qualified Immunity Act Dear Members of the United States Congress: We are more than 1,400 current and former professional athletes and coaches from across the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball in America. We are tired of conversations around police accountability that go nowhere, and we have engaged in too many “listening sessions” where we discuss whether there is a problem of police violence in this country. There is a problem. The world witnessed it when Officer Chauvin murdered George Floyd, and the world is watching it now, as officers deploy enormous force on peaceful protestors like those who were standing outside of the White House last week. The time for debate about the unchecked authority of the police is over; it is now time for change. We are writing to ask that you pass the bill to end qualified immunity introduced by Representatives Justin Amash and Ayanna Pressley. Congress passed the Ku Klux Klan Act in 1871 to give ordinary citizens recourse when powerful public officials violate constitutional rights. By passing that Act, codified in 42 U.S.C. 1983, Congress told its citizenry that no one is above the law, especially those who abuse government power. A healthy democracy requires no less; citizens must know that if those who promise to uphold the law and protect the community fail to do so, there is a remedy available. The law, as one author has noted, is “a bulwark of American liberty.” ​ ​ The Supreme Court has caused irreparable harm to public trust by creating and then expanding the doctrine of qualified immunity, which often exempts police officers and others from liability, even for shocking abuse.
