French windows from the open-plan living space lead out to a sunny terrace, ideal for al-fresco barbecues or evenings chatting with friends over a glass of local wine. Wander up the stone steps and appreciate the privilege of having your very own swimming pool, which can be heated on request. Relax in the glorious gardens, surrounded by summer flowers and shrubs. From the top of the garden you can head through the gate, down the lane and within minutes you are in the heart of Le Bugue with its restaurants, shops and atmospheric market on a Tuesday morning. Admire the town’s historic houses, hire canoes along the Vézère river or simply stop for a coffee in a pretty café, soaking up the charm all around you. This is a great base for exploring both the pre-historic sites of the Vézère valley (a UNESCO World Heritage site) as well as the highlights of Dordogne. Visit the stalagmites at Gouffre de Proumeyssac, just a five-minute drive away or head to Limeuil, 6km away and one of France’s most beautiful villages, where the Vézère and Dordogne meet. The exquisite market town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is only 30km away or even closer is the fascinating village of Les Eyzies with its National Museum of Prehistory. Périgueux, Bergerac and many more idyllic Dordogne villages are also perfect days out, all easily reached in under an hour from your picture- perfect historic home. It is a fantastic location for exploring both the landscapes of the UNESCO classified Vézère valley as well as the idyllic villages and towns of the Dordogne region. Le Bugue is a bustling little town with a popular market on a Tuesday morning. Pick up morning pastries from the boulangerie, sample local wines in the atmospheric bars and dine in a selection of restaurants in the town. Its setting is picturesque on the banks of the Vézère and there are plenty of opportunities to hire canoes and kayaks for a day paddling on the river. Just 6km south is the delightful village of Limeuil where the Vézère and Dordogne rivers meet. Climb up to the top of the village for wonderful views, then return to the riverside for a paddle on the beach. Trémolat (13km) is another fine village on the banks of the Dordogne with a Michelin starred restaurant and choice of river-based watersports. The Vézère valley is truly spectacular with glorious landscapes and prehistoric sites. Les Eyzies (12km) is one of the best known villages, home to the Musée National de Préhistoire, whilst visitors also flock to Montignac and the new Lascaux exhibition centre. As well as fascinating places to visit, this region is also ideal for hiking, cycling, fishing, horse-riding and more. For a stunning day out along the Dordogne river, head to the archetypal villages of Domme, La Roque Gageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac for magnificent scenery, impressive châteaux and relaxing boat rides. The historic town of Sarlat is also a must-see, especially on market day with its gastronomic reputation. Other bastide villages to discover include Monpazier (33km), one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and Issigeac (44km) with a great Sunday morning market. Perhaps combine Issigeac with a trip to Bergerac, a joy to explore with its medieval buildings, fantastic restaurants and excellent wines.
