Le Clocher Region: Dordogne Sleeps: 4 Le Clocher Region: Dordogne Sleeps: 4 Overview Set on a pretty lane in the heart of the market town of Le Bugue, Le Clocher is a delightful maison with its own swimming pool and gardens, just a short stroll from the Vézère river and a perfect position for exploring all that Dordogne has to offer. Step through the door with its traditional iron grills and be enchanted by the welcoming ambience of this Dordogne home. There’s a pretty twin with its own adjacent shower room, then stairs lead up to the open-plan living-dining area and kitchen which offers ample space for a family of four, couple or small group of friends. A second bedroom, this one a charming double with its own balcony looking over the picturesque street, can also be found on the upper floor with its own en suite bath and shower room. French windows from the open-plan living space lead out to a sunny terrace, ideal for al-fresco barbecues or evenings chatting with friends over a glass of local wine. Wander up the stone steps and appreciate the privilege of having your very own swimming pool, which can be heated on request. Relax in the glorious gardens, surrounded by summer flowers and shrubs. From the top of the garden you can head through the gate, down the lane and within minutes you are in the heart of Le Bugue with its restaurants, shops and atmospheric market on a Tuesday morning. Admire the town’s historic houses, hire canoes along the Vézère river or simply stop for a coffee in a pretty café, soaking up the charm all around you. This is a great base for exploring both the pre-historic sites of the Vézère valley (a UNESCO World Heritage site) as well as the highlights of Dordogne. Visit the stalagmites at Gouffre de Proumeyssac, just a five-minute drive away or head to Limeuil, 6km away and one of France’s most beautiful villages, where the Vézère and Dordogne meet. The exquisite market town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is only 30km away or even closer is the fascinating village of Les Eyzies with its National Museum of Prehistory. It is a fantastic location for exploring both the landscapes of the UNESCO classified Vézère valley as well as the idyllic villages and towns of the Dordogne region. Le Bugue is a bustling little town with a popular market on a Tuesday morning. Pick up morning pastries from the boulangerie, sample local wines in the atmospheric bars and dine in a selection of restaurants in the town. Its setting is picturesque on the banks of the Vézère and there are plenty of opportunities to hire canoes and kayaks for a day paddling on the river. Just 6km south is the delightful village of Limeuil where the Vézère and Dordogne rivers meet. Climb up to the top of the village for wonderful views, then return to the riverside for a paddle on the beach. Trémolat (13km) is another fine village on the banks of the Dordogne with a Michelin starred restaurant and choice of river-based watersports. The Vézère valley is truly spectacular with glorious landscapes and prehistoric sites. Les Eyzies (12km) is one of the best known villages, home to the Musée National de Préhistoire, whilst visitors also flock to Montignac and the new Lascaux exhibition centre. As well as fascinating places to visit, this region is also ideal for hiking, cycling, fishing, horse-riding and more. For a stunning day out along the Dordogne river, head to the archetypal villages of Domme, La Roque Gageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac for magnificent scenery, impressive châteaux and relaxing boat rides. The historic town of Sarlat is also a must-see, especially on market day with its gastronomic reputation. Other bastide villages to discover include Monpazier (33km), one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and Issigeac (44km) with a great Sunday morning market. Perhaps combine Issigeac with a trip to Bergerac, a joy to explore with its medieval buildings, fantastic restaurants and excellent wines. About 1 mile after going under the A89, you will reach a roundabout where you should take the D710 off to the right (towards Sarlat/Les Eyzies and Espagne/Toulouse Bis). After 9 miles (15 km), the road for Les Eyzies and Sarlat forks off to your left, but you should continue on the D710, following directions for Le Bugue and Espagne/Toulouse Bis. Once you reach Le Bugue's one-way system (after a further 10½ miles/17 km), go all the way through the village towards Campagne. Do not cross the bridge over the Vézère river in the middle of the town. Further down this road, you will cross the Vézère river, to enter the village of Campagne. Within a few hundred metres, bear off right onto the D35 to drive the 6 miles (10 km) up and over the hill into St- Cyprien-keep an eye out at the top of the hill for the turning right for the 2 mile, (3½ km) rather bumpy, descent into St Cyprien.
