"When we first came on to the Yellowstone, I lingered for some time to make a view of the valley, with the river meandering through it, with a spot where the trail passed over a high rocky ledge. Then came a canyon...... Descending rapidly, we made camp on Cascade Creek a small stream entering the Yellowstone between the Upper and Lower Falls. Two very busy days were spent in exploration for the best points of view. Working enthusiasm was keyed to the highest pitch by the grandeur of the canyon and the falls. The greatest scenic features of Yellowstone. We were up with the sun each morning, everyone making discovery of some new or more wonderful viewpoint, and then choosing the best for each particular aspect of the river, canyon or falls." - W.H. Jackson recounting his 1871.
