There are many committees and activities in the Philadelphia Sketch Club that need HS Art Show Results: p. 2 your contribution of time and energy. Friendly Reminder: 2013 Membership Dues Thanks to the many members who renewed their Sketch Club membership by paying $150 during January and February. As of February 28, 2013, individuals will need to pay $160 to rejoin the Club or arrange to pay in quarterly payments of $40. Associate members pay $75 and a Family Level membership is $225. It is important to pay your dues early within the calendar year since we rely upon them to support operations and programming. We wish to have as many members renew for 2013. If you have not renewed since 2011 or 2012, your name will be dropped from our membership list. If you have not received an invoice for 2013 or if you have a question about the status of your membership, please call the PSC administrative office at 215-545-9298. P a g e | 1 March 2013 Recent Events 2013 High School Art Show Results Tessie Varthas, (left) Content Specialist for Art Education, Office of Academic Enrichment and Support, School District of Philadelphia, and Dorothy Roschen, Curator of the Annual High School Art Student Show at PSC, present awards at the reception for the 29th annual event. ► From Dorothy Roschen, Chairperson,2013 H.S.Art Show: Congratulations Philadelphia Sketch Club!!! The High School Art Show was a splendid success! There were 144 pieces, 26 art teachers, 18 different schools, and 46 awards. Super Thanks to all the donors of awards. Your names will be listed and pictures from the show will be on the website article, which will be accomplished soon by our University of the Arts intern, Ariel Rolfe. The reception was crowded as usual, and the opportunity to meet with the artists and their art teachers with their work was very special. Thanks to the volunteers for helping the teachers hang the work, food providers, Call to Entry producer, Debra Cooperstein, greeters, Jacqueline Barnette, Barbara Farley, Lucy Roehm, and Jym Paris, Judges,that did a lot more than judging, Richard and Jacqueline Kunin ,and Sibylle Pfaffenbichler , Mina Smith Segal, Deborah Horsting, Richard Harrington, PSC President, Faad Ghoraishi, Exhibitions Chairman, Ken Weiner, website co-ordinator, Jeff, Gola "Portfolio" editor, Norka Shedlock, PSC Executive Director, and Tessie Varthas, Content Specialist for Art Education, Office of Academic Enrichment and Support, School District of Philadelphia. This was a real co-operation between the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the School District of Philadelphia, which also provided all the printing. Without such a super team this show could never happen. Thanks to All!!!! February Dinner Meeting The speaker for our February meeting was PSC member Garth Herrick who gave a presentation of his portrait and other work, include the portrait of Mayor Street that is currently in progress. ◄ Garth Herrick with "Young Garth", a life size self portrait of himself at age 5 , oil on 3/4 inch plywood and cut out as a freestanding painting. Chair: Rich Harrington April 12 – 27: 150th Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings Don't miss one of the Sketch Club's most important annual exhibitions. This year will be the 150th anniversary of the Small Oils Show. Start getting your submissions ready now. A copy of the Prospectus is listed in the website under “Exhibitions”. As noted in the Prospectus, the exhibition will run from April 12 to 27. Drop-off days for submissions are Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, from Noon to 5 PM. P a g e | 4 March 2013 Upcoming Events This Month’s Dinner Meeting, March 8: An Evening with Charles Santore The Bucks County Illustrators Society and the Philadelphia Sketch Club cordially invite you to share an evening with renowned illustrator Charles Santore on Friday, March 8, at the Philadelphia Sketch Club. Mr. Santore's work is part of the permanent collections of the Brandywine River Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as many private collections. He is a winner of the prestigious Hamilton King Award from the New York Society of Illustrators, where his work was recently featured this past October in a solo exhibition entitled: "Exploring the Narrative Picture." Among his most popular works are illustrations for The Complete Tales of Peter Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, The Wizard of Oz, Paul Revere's Ride and The Night Before Christmas. Doors open at 5 pm. Mr. Santore's talk will start at 6:30 pm in the upstairs gallery, and dinner will be served immediately after at 7:15 pm. Admission for the talk and dinner is $20, for students $15. We urge you to reserve your ticket now, as seating is limited. Please make your reservation for this dinner meeting by calling 215-545-9298. Reservations must be received no later than Monday, March 4, for dinner and the talk, and payment will be taken at the door. ◄ Charles Santore’s “The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher” (from “The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Other Cherished Stories” by Beatrix Potter) The menu for the March dinner includes: Tossed Salad The agenda: Seafood Newburg 5:00 - 6:30 - Social Hour Tri Colored Rotini in Garlic Parmesan Butter 6:30 - 7:00 - Speaker Charles Santore Eggplant Parmesan 7:15 - Dinner Cookies & Brownies Next Month’s Dinner Meeting, April 12: Golden Artist Colors The speaker for our April 12th Dinner meeting will be Roy Kinzer, the Representative Artist from Golden Artist Colors. Roy will be demonstrating the new Golden Open Acrylic line of paints, and will have free samples for PSC members attending the dinner meeting. Roy has an M.F.A. (Vermont College) and a Certificate of Art (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art). He has exhibited extensively, including the Slater Museum in Connecticut and the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey. His current paintings are aerial landscapes derived from altered maps and satellite images. He received the prestigious Pollock-Krasner award 2004 and exhibits at Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC . He has completed numerous commissions, the most recent the Hyatt Regency New Orleans, in October 2011.
