Australian Catholic Bishops Conference AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE Two new Auxiliary Bishops appointed to the Archdiocese of Sydney Media release 24 June 2016 His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed as Auxiliary Bishops of Sydney, the Reverend Monsignor Anthony Randazzo of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, and the Reverend Father Richard James Umbers of the Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei. Mons Randazzo has also been appointed Titular Bishop of Quiza and Fr Umbers Titular Bishop of Thala. President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Denis Hart, welcomed the announcement by the Holy Father today. ‘I warmly welcome Monsignor Anthony Randazzo and Father Richard Umbers appointed as Auxiliary Bishops of Sydney. Both pastors bring a diversity of talents; they are generous and hard working, real men of the Church. Their gifts will be a further enrichment to the Archdiocese and to the Australian bishops. May they serve for many years.’ Upon receiving his new appointment, Bishop-Elect Randazzo said, ‘I find it a great privilege and joy to be called by the Holy Father to this role in the Archdiocese of Sydney. I am looking forward to meeting the people, the priests and religious across the Archdiocese, they are valiant people who have a marvellous faith. I look forward to evangelising with them and taking the Church into the modern world’. ‘One of the things that really excites me about returning to the Archdiocese of Sydney is the history of the Church of Sydney. It’s the foundation of the faith in this land.’ Mons Randazzo was born in Sydney on 7 October 1966. He received his primary and secondary education in Coolangatta and Southport, Queensland and qualified with a Bachelor of Theology from Brisbane College of Theology in 1991. On 31 May 1991, Mons Randazzo was ordained a deacon and ordained a priest on 29 November 1991 in the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Between 1998 and 2006, he studied Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. An official at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith between 2004 and 2008, Mons Randazzo became Rector of Holy Spirit Seminary, Queensland from 2009 until 2015. Mons Randazzo was previously Director of Vocations in the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Founding Director of Canali House – a programme of discernment for priestly formation, and formerly the Archbishop’s Liaison for the Emmanuel Community Brisbane. The bishop-elect is currently a judge of the National Appeal Tribunal of the Catholic Church of Australia and New Zealand and assistant to Archbishop Mark Coleridge at St Stephen’s Cathedral, Brisbane. Following the announcement, Bishop-Elect Umbers said, ‘I’m very humbled to have been appointed a successor to the Apostles. I hope to be a fellow fisher of souls alongside Archbishop Anthony, Bishop Terry and Bishop-Elect Tony. This is going to be something of an adventure’. Born in Auckland, New Zealand on 17 March 1971, Fr Umbers originally studied management at the University of Waikato in 1989 but transferred to the University of Sydney in 1992 to receive more intense formation at a Centre of Opus Dei in Chatswood, Sydney. He later qualified with a Bachelor of Economics from University of Sydney and a Masters of Management from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Fr Umbers entered the Opus Dei Seminary of Cavabianca, Rome in 1996 and studied at Santa Croce Pontifical University, Rome, achieving a Bachelor of Theology in 1999. Between 1999-2002, Fr Umbers studied at the University of Navarre, Spain where he received a Doctorate in Philosophy. On 14 February 2002, Fr Umbers was ordained a deacon and later ordained a priest on 1 September 2002. Since 2003, Fr Umbers has worked pastorally as a School and University Chaplain at a number of NSW colleges. He is currently Chaplain of Warrane College, Creston College and Kenvale College. He also tutored and lectured at the University of Notre Dame, Sydney between 2006 and 2013. Fr Umbers is currently a representative of the Archbishop on the Council of Priests of the Archdiocese of Sydney and a member representative for the Archdiocese to the St John of God Hospitals. The ordination of the bishop-elects will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney on Wednesday 24 August 2016 at 7pm AEST.     MEDIA RELEASE March 23, 2020 DELEGATES NAMED FOR CELEBRATION OF PLENARY COUNCIL Plenary Council president Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB has written to 266 other Catholics across the country, calling them as delegates for the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia. “At a time in our Church’s history we’ve not seen before, with the suspension of Masses in many parts of the country and around the world, the announcement of our Plenary Council delegates is a source of great joy for the People of God in Australia,” Archbishop Costelloe said. Canon law outlines those who must be called as delegates to a plenary council, including bishops, vicars general, episcopal vicars, heads of seminaries and theological institutions, and leaders of religious congregations. That amounted to 180 delegates. Canon law also allows for delegates who may be called as representatives – the total of which can’t exceed half of the total of those who must be called. The number of delegates from each local church – a diocese, eparchy, ordinariate or prelature – ranged from one to four depending on the local Catholic population. In all, 78 people have so far been confirmed, with additional representation to be named from national organisations representing education, social services, health and aged care, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic. “Bishops across the country worked locally with leaders in their diocese to design a process to consider names of people who were nominated or applied to be delegates for the Plenary Council assemblies,” Archbishop Costelloe said. “We were grateful for and impressed with the faith and the calibre of the people who were nominated.

    AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE PLENARY MEETING November 27-December 1, 2017 On Monday, November 27, the Catholic bishops of Australia gathered for the biannual Plenary Meeting at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney. The 14 Commissions of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference held meetings on the first day of the gathering, followed by the Plenary Meeting over the four subsequent days. Opening Mass The Mass of the Holy Spirit was concelebrated on November 28 in the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel. Conference president Archbishop Denis Hart was the principal celebrant and preached the homily. Welcome Archbishop Hart welcomed his fellow bishops and the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana. Archbishop Yllana concelebrated the opening Mass, met bishops informally and addressed the Plenary Meeting. Archbishop Hart also welcomed the new First Secretary to the Apostolic Nunciature, Monsignor Emmanuel Olakunle Fadeyi, as well as the observers from the Australian Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes (Catholic Religious Australia): Sr Ruth Durick OSU and Sr Monica Cavanagh RSJ. Fr Tom McDonough CP was unable to attend. The Catholic community is the largest religious denomination in Australia with more than one in five Australians identifying as Catholic. There are more than 1,800,000 Catholics in NSW alone. We operate 11 hospitals and more than 60 aged care and nursing homes. More than 310,000 students are educated in approximately 600 Catholic schools in NSW, with thousands more studying at our two Catholic universities. As Australia’s largest non-government operator of hospitals, aged and community care services, the Catholic Church provides about 10 per cent of the country’s health care services, including considerable services to pregnant women and babies. We have a long and proud history of providing holistic care for mothers and children in this state. Our position is borne of experience.     AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE Two New Bishops Ordained in the Archdiocese of Sydney Media release 25 August 2016 The Episcopal Ordination of the Most Reverend Anthony Randazzo and Most Reverend Richard Umbers took place at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney on Wednesday evening 24 August 2016, the Feast of St Bartholomew. Both Bishop Randazzo and Bishop Umbers were ordained Auxiliary Bishops of Sydney and will join Bishop Terry Brady as the three Auxiliary Bishops serving the Archdiocese of Sydney. The Most Reverend Anthony Fisher OP, Archbishop of Sydney, was the Principal Consecrator and Celebrant. The Most Reverend Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane, and the Most Reverend Stephen Lee Bun-sang, Bishop of Macau, were the Principal Co- Consecrators. In his words of welcome, Archbishop Fisher extended a special welcome to Bishop Denis Browne, Emeritus Bishop of Hamilton, New Zealand, who baptised Bishop Umbers. He also welcomed civic and religious leaders and representatives from sister churches. The Bishops of Australia and from New Zealand, clergy of the Archdiocese of Sydney and visiting clergy concelebrated. The choir of St Mary’s Cathedral provided the music. During the presentation of the bishops-elect, the Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, recited the Papal Bull. In his homily, Archbishop Fisher said, ‘our two new bishops have been appointed in interesting times’. After listing news headlines from the past two months, he said, ‘there will be many more such challenges for humanity in the coming years. And behind the violence and insecurity, the populist politics and shaky economics, the inauthenticity in sport, culture and religion, there are individual heart-breaks and profound moral-spiritual issues’.

    AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE Bishop Anthony Randazzo named Bishop of Broken Bay Media Release October 7, 2019 Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Anthony Randazzo the fourth Bishop of Broken Bay, a diocese that covers much of Sydney’s North Shore and the New South Wales Central Coast. Bishop Randazzo, currently an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Sydney, succeeds Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli, whose episcopacy in Broken Bay ended in July 2018 after he was appointed Archbishop of Melbourne. Born in Sydney, Bishop Randazzo grew up in southeast Queensland and went on to study at the Pius XII Provincial Seminary and the University of Queensland. He was ordained a priest for Brisbane Archdiocese in 1991. After parish and diocesan responsibilities in Brisbane, Bishop Randazzo moved to Rome, where he gained qualifications in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He would later work for five years at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Upon returning to Australia, Bishop Randazzo served as rector of Holy Spirit Seminary, which trains priests for the five dioceses of Queensland, before being appointed an auxiliary bishop for Sydney in 2016. Bishop Randazzo said during his ministry, and especially his ministry in neighbouring Sydney Archdiocese, he has observed the Diocese of Broken Bay to be “a vibrant, animated, and Spirit- filled Church”. “I have a great sense of hopeful expectation as I anticipate how we will live the life of faith and discipleship together and how we will give witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ in our world,” Bishop Randazzo said. “I am grateful to God and to Pope Francis for the trust that has been placed in me to lead, guide and accompany the people of God in the Diocese of Broken Bay.

The details you will hear and read in the media over the coming days will be truly shocking and confronting. The Cardinal has announced that he will appeal the conviction. Therefore, as the legal process is not complete I won’t be making any further comments and I urge people to wait for the appeal process to run its course before reaching a final judgement on this matter. Once again, I express to those who have suffered abuse at the hands of Church personnel, to their families and to the entire community my shame and apology for that dark chapter in our history.

    AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE PLENARY MEETING May 6-13, 2021 Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties with travel, gathering and quarantine, the Catholic bishops of Australia conducted their biannual plenary meeting using videoconferencing technology. The nine Commissions of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference held meetings on the first day of the gathering, followed by the plenary meeting over the six subsequent days – except Sunday, May 9. Bishops in some provinces gathered in “hubs”; other bishops participated from their home dioceses. Opening Mass The Mass of the Holy Spirit was celebrated by bishops in their own locations on May 7. Conference president Archbishop Mark Coleridge provided a written homily. Welcome Archbishop Coleridge welcomed his fellow bishops and the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana. Archbishop Yllana greeted the bishops, also providing recorded and written versions of his address. Archbishop Coleridge also welcomed the observers from Catholic Religious Australia: president Br Peter Carroll FMS, vice-president Sr Patty Fawkner SGS and Fr Tom McDonough CP. Deaths of Former Members of the Conference The bishops offered prayers for bishops who have died since the previous plenary meeting: Bishop Geoffrey Robinson, Former Auxiliary of Sydney; Archbishop Philip Wilson, Archbishop Emeritus of Adelaide; Bishop Luc Matthys, Bishop Emeritus of Armidale; Bishop Bede Heather, Bishop Emeritus of Parramatta. They also marked the death of Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy AC, Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria in Via Lata, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity – an Australian bishop who served the Church internationally, so was not ever a member of the Bishops Conference.
