Later, it was attached with newly created Faisalabad Division further; its Tehsil Chiniot has been notified as District & District Jhang now, consist of four Tehsils i.e. Jhang 18 Hazari Shorkot Ahmed Pur Sial B) IMPORTANT PLACES Jhang is a land of shrines and mausoleums out of which. Shrines of Hazrat Sultan Bahoo and Hazrat Shah Jewana are well known. Our volunteers are conducting rescue and relief operations in various areas of District Jhang. Teams of SDO are ready to deal with deteriorating situation. SDO carried out a food distribution and relief operation in Jhang, which was almost completely submerged in water due to incessant flood. The rivers Chenab and Jhelum have also been gaining strength and there is a probability of a flood in adjacent areas. Cooked food and other essential items are being provided to affectees. JHANG FLOOD 2014 SITUATIONAL REPORT Social Development Organization SDO ® Future Intervention Plans A bigger scale of response will be needed to support flood affected families. However, SDO ® initial Caseloads to support 800 families in District Jhang. 1. Provision of NFIs. Distribution of NFIs will be done, as per the above caseload. 2. Provision of Food Assistance. Distribution of food will be done, as per the above caseload. 3. Medical and Health Care. 1 x mobile health teams will be deployed with medicines for one month IDENTIFIED FUTURE NEEDS Following are the immediate needs of the affected communities: 1. Emergency Shelter (Tents and Tarpaulin Sheets) 2. Non Food Items (Kitchen Set, Hygiene Kit, Blankets, Clothes etc) 3. Food Package (1 month Package) 4. Medicines for flood victims. GULFRAZ AND DANIEL POTTER2 1Department of Botany, Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, Pakistan 2Department of Plant Sciences, University of California Davis, USA. *Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] Abstract The floristic survey of the Thal desert, Punjab, Pakistan was carried out during 2010 to 2013. So far, 248 species distributed across 166 genera and 38 families were identified during the report period. Besides, one species viz., Themeda triandra was recorded for the first time from Pakistan. Of them, one fern, 4 monocots and 33 dicots families were determined. The most dominating family was Poaceae that contributed 52 species (21.49%), followed by Fabaceae (34 spp., 13.05%) and Amaranthaceae & Asteraceae (17 spp., 7.02% each). The largest genera were Euphorbia (6 spp.), Cyperus, Eragrostis and Solanum (5 spp. each), Mollugo, Heliotropium and Cenchrus (4 spp. each), Acacia, Prosopis, Tephrosia, Corchorus, Boerhavia and Ziziphus (3 spp. each). This checklist consists of updated systematic families and plants names that will provide a useful starting point for further ecological and bioprospective research of the area under study. Introduction about the vegetation of the study area which helps further ecological investigations and conservation measures. The Thal desert is situated between 31° 10’ N and 71° 30’ E in the Punjab, province, Pakistan (Fig. 1). The area is subtropical sandy desert spread over 190 miles with its maximum breadth of 70 miles. The tract is bound by the piedmont of the Salt Range in the north, the Indus River flood plains in the west and Jhelum and Chenab River flood plains in the east.

To meet ever-increasing food and fiber requirements of rapidly multiplying population, Pakistan’s agriculture depends heavily on irrigation from surface and ground water resources. Canal water resources alone are not sufficient to meet crop water requirements. To overcome this deficiency, farmers exploit the ground water resources. In present study, concentration was given to quantify the impact of ground water on wheat production in District Jhang, Punjab, Pakistan. A production function was estimated by using the regression technique. Results of the study showed that tubewell irrigation accounts for about 19 percent of the total cost of production of wheat crop. The results also showed that land holding, use of fertilizer, experience of farming and sodium absorption ratio were major factors affecting gross value product (GVP) of wheat. Adjusted R 2 of the study was 0.59 which shows the goodness of fit of data. Significant F-test showed that results were overall significant. The findings of the study would help policy makers to formulate policies promoting wheat production through efficient and wise utilization of ground water resources.
