Alanis Morissette to Be Inducted Into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE YOU OUGHTA KNOW… ALANIS MORISSETTE TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE CANADIAN MUSIC HALL OF FAME Award-winning singer-songwriter will be honoured at The 2015 JUNO Awards on Sunday, March 15 Toronto, ON (February 10, 2015) – The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) is pleased to announce Alanis Morissette as the 2015 inductee into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Spanning nearly three decades, Morissette’s extraordinary career has produced a string of chart-topping albums and garnered her numerous awards and accolades, including 13 JUNO Awards, seven Grammy Awards and two Golden Globe Award nominations. The singer-songwriter will add yet another achievement when she is honoured during the 44th annual JUNO Awards Broadcast live on CTV and CTV Go, Sunday, March 15 at 7 p.m. ET/8 p.m. AT and at 7 p.m. in all other markets, from the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, Ontario. “It is an honour to be honoured by my home country that I adore so much,” says Alanis Morissette. “Alanis forged a new path for women in music when she released Jagged Little Pill in 1995 and became one of the most influential singer-songwriter-musicians in contemporary music,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards. “Her induction to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame is more than deserving. We are incredibly proud to be honouring her long history of accomplishments and celebrating her one of a kind voice at the 2015 JUNO Awards.” Having recorded her first song at the age of 10 and winning her first JUNO Award at 17, Alanis Morissette has already accomplished more than many musicians do in a lifetime. Her first studio album self-titled Alanis was released in Canada in 1991, and the dance-pop album went to platinum with its first single, “Too Hot” reaching the top twenty on the singles chart. Morissette went on to release Now Is The Time in 1992 – a ballad-driven record which produced three top 40 singles: “An Emotion Away,” the minor contemporary hit “No Apologies,” and “(Change Is) Never a Waste of Time.” After moving to Los Angeles in 1995, Morissette took the music scene by storm with the release of Jagged Little Pill – a mature, compellingly personal collection of original modern-rock compositions that sold an astonishing 30 million copies worldwide. Morissette’s popularity grew significantly in Canada, where the album was certified twelve-times platinum and produced four chart-toppers: “Hand in My Pocket”, “Ironic”, “You Learn”, and “Head Over Feet.” Morissette and the album won five JUNO Awards in 1996 in Hamilton: Album of the Year, Single of the Year (“You Oughta Know”), Female Vocalist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Best Rock Album. At the 1996 Grammy Awards, she won Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, Best Rock Song (both for “You Oughta Know”), Best Rock Album and Album of the Year. With a steadily growing fan base and rising success, Morissette quickly became renowned for her skillful songwriting, mesmerizing vocals and undeniable talent. Her passion for music remained unwavering over the years and produced a streak of critically acclaimed albums, including Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998), Under Rug Swept (2002), So-Called Chaos (2004), Flavors of Entanglement (2008) and Havoc and Bright Lights (2012). To date, Morissette’s albums have sold 60 million copies worldwide and won her over 25 awards, including 13 JUNO Awards, seven Grammy Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, two American Music Awards and the UN Global Tolerance Award.     COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

    This interview with DOLLY PARTON was conducted by the Library of Congress on February 19, 2016. Dolly Parton LOC: As “Coat of Many Colors” was based upon a childhood experience, what inspired you in 1971 to finally put that story to music? DP: I can’t say I have a distinct memory of sitting down and saying, “Now’s the time to write a song about this experience.” Really none of my songs come from that intentional of a place. Ideas, melodies and certain lines sit with me until a moment comes and everything just starts to come together. Obviously this experience had a big impact on me so the painful part of the memory would come to the surface every now and again, then I would push it back down and then it would come around the bend once again. So each time I would be dialed into the memory, a line or the melody would come together. One day I was on the bus and the moment came where all of the lines to the song started to flow but I didn’t have anything to write down the words. So I looked up and there was a dry cleaner tag on one of Porters outfits so I just ripped it off and started to put pen to paper. I still have that dry cleaner receipt at my museum in Dollywood. What is really remarkable about the whole journey was the fact that I carried that hurt for so long but, once I wrote the song, I felt released from the hurt.
