The detailed description Muricanthus kuesterianus of this species has been given with the comparison of its close resembled species Chicoreus virgineus Chicoreus virgineus. INTRODUCTION Muricidae, the largest and varied taxonomic family among marine gastropods has small to large predatory sea snails in the Order Neogastropoda. At least 1,000 species of muricids under numerous subfamilies are known. Many muricids have unusual shells which are considered attractive by shell collectors. The spire and body whorl of the muricids are often ornamental with knobs, tubercules, ribbing or spines. Muricids have episodic growth which means that the shell grows in spurts, remain- ing in the same size for a while before rapidly growing to the next size stage resulting in a series of varices on each whorl. Most species of muricids are carnivorous, feeding on other gastropods, bivalves and barnacles. Murexiella dalli, especie nueva, caracterizada por su protoconcha con pocas vueltas, por su escultura y por presentar un largo canal sifonal, marcadamente inclinado hacia la parte dor- sal de la concha. Chrysallida thetisae, especie nueva, que se distingue por su protoconcha heterostrofica, parcialmente sumergida en la espira, por su escultura y por la columela con dos pliegues en la pared parieto-columelar. ABSTRACT One new genus and four new species of marine gastropods with very distinctive shells are described. They were collected in submarine caves of Santa Lucia and Guanahacabibes, Cuba. En accord avec les datations Ovulidae, Pediculariinae, chrono-stratigraphiques connues établies dans le bassin, l’âge de la faune mala- Bartonien, cologique, déplacée à partir d’un faciès récifal, est datée du Bartonien supérieur Bassin sud-Pyrénéen, (Éocène moyen). Il est proposé de placer O. riberai n. gen., n. sp. au sein des Espagne, genre nouveau, Pediculariinae, une sous-famille des Ovulidae (Cypraeoidea), à proximité de espèce nouvelle. However, little 15 is known about these planktonic veligers and identification of the larval state of many Cymatiidae 16 is challenging at best. Here we describe the first high-quality scanning electron microscopy images 17 of the developing veliger larvae of Monoplex pilearis and Monoplex parthenopeus (Gastropoda: 18 Cymatiidae). The developing shell of Monoplex veligers was captured by SEM, showing plates 19 secreted to form the completed shell. The incubation time of the two species was recorded and 20 found to be different; M. parthenopeus took 24 days to develop fully and hatch out of the egg 21 capsules, whereas M. pilearis took over a month to leave the egg capsule. Using scanning electron 22 microscopy and geometric morphometrics, the morphology of veliger larvae was compared. No 23 significant differences were found between the shapes of the developing shell between the two 24 species; however, it was found that M. pilearis was significantly larger than M. -

If urbanisation is accompanied by a concomitant increase in shipping then this may also be a factor, i.e. increased propagule pressure of non-native species due to translocation beyond their native range via the hulls of ships and/or in ballast water. Singapore is potentially highly vulnerable to invasion by non-native marine species as its coastline comprises over 60% seawall and it is one of the world’s busiest ports. The aim of this study is to investigate the native, non-native, and cryptogenic molluscs found on Singapore’s seawalls. -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF BENTHIC MOLLUSCS ALONG A DEPTH GRADIENT IN THE BAHAMAS Michael Joseph Dowgiallo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Marjorie L. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range. -

Poppe INTRODUCTION The publication of Philippine Marine Mollusks, Volumes 1 to 4 has been a revelation to the conchological community. Apart from being the delight of collectors, the PMM started a new way of layout and publishing - followed today by many authors. Internet technology has allowed more than 50 experts worldwide to work on the collection that forms the base of the 4 PMM books. This expertise, together with modern means of identification has allowed a quality in determinations which is unique in books covering a geographical area. Our Volume 1 was published only 9 years ago: in 2008. Since that time “a lot” has changed. Finally, after almost two decades, the digital world has been embraced by the scientific community, and a new generation of young scientists appeared, well acquainted with text processors, internet communication and digital photographic skills. Museums all over the planet start putting the holotypes online – a still ongoing process – which saves taxonomists from huge confusion and “guessing” about how animals look like. Initiatives as Biodiversity Heritage Library made accessible huge libraries to many thousands of biologists who, without that, were not able to publish properly. The process of all these technological revolutions is ongoing and improves taxonomy and nomenclature in a way which is unprecedented. All this caused an acceleration in the nomenclatural field: both in quantity and in quality of expertise and fieldwork. The above changes are not without huge problematics. Many studies are carried out on the wide diversity of these problems and even books are written on the subject. -

El presente trabajo tuvo la fina- lidad de analizar algunos aspectos reproductivos de la especie en la laguna de La Restinga, isla de Margarita, Venezuela, en cuatro estaciones de esta, desde la zona más interna a la zona más externa. Se recolectaron muestras mensualmente para determinar la proporción por sexos; además, fueron extraídas del medio algunas posturas para su descripción y la observación del crecimiento inicial de la especie.
