The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. Please direct correspondence to Robert White ([email protected]), Professor of Sociology and Director of Motorsports Studies, or Andrew Baker ([email protected]), Lecturer, Department of Geography, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 425 University Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202. 1 The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Abstract Over the course of its lengthy history, the popularity of open-wheeled automobile racing in the United States has waxed and waned. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport. -

Here's What Seemed Like a Three-Part Recipe for Losing an Indy 500: 1
0 22 Here’s what seemed like a three-part recipe for losing an Indy 500: 1. Evict from the lobby of a plush hotel a year-old March rear-engine racing car; 2. Hire at the last instant a semi-retired old gaffer to race it; 3. Man it with a slap-dash and inexperienced crew whose members include an insurance-claims adjuster, a part-time truck driver, and a fabricator whose specialties aren’t dumping fuel or swapping rubber but boring into the insides of turbochargers Every odds-maker and Indy 500 handicapper going would have spent two minutes examining this hodge-podge and declared it the 1987 500’s biggest long- shot. And rightly so, because in its first and only experience of practicing together, which was during Carburetion Day’s final tune-up, the antique racing car, doddering racing driver, and butter- fingered crew successfully engineered ridiculous pit stops slower than two-thirds of the rest of the field of 33. Once the 500 started, the jittery old racing driver began performing to everybody’s worst expectations. First he barely escaped involvement in a big accident on the first corner of the opening lap. Next he fell a full lap behind – the worst thing that could have happened. And then, on his very first pit stop, his inexperienced crew did OK. But the 47-year-old racing driver was struck down with another case of nerves and stalled his engine. And then, after lots of odd things – very, very odd things – had occurred in the 500’s remaining 450 miles, this gang of no-hopes and their doddering driver had conquered the odds and won the Indy 71st 500. -

100 Chevy Factoids
100 Chevy Factoids History of Chevy 1. Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant co-founded the Chevrolet Motor Company on November 3, 1911. Chevy celebrates its 100th birthday on November 3, 2011. 2. A seasoned automobile racer and highly respected self-taught engineer, Louis Chevrolet was born in Switzerland on Dec. 25, 1878 and moved to France with his family as a child. He immigrated to North America in 1900. By 1902, his younger brothers, Arthur and Gaston, had joined him. As early as 1905, Louis Chevrolet was winning notice as a fearless driver of the brutally primitive racing cars of the period. He became a member of William C. Durant's famed Buick racing team in 1909. Working with a designer in a rented loft in Detroit during 1910, Louis Chevrolet began to lay out the plans for the prototype car that would bear his name. 3. The grandson of an early Michigan governor, William C. “Billy” Durant was born in 1861. By the 1890s, he was a highly successful manufacturer of horse-drawn carts that were distributed globally. Durant moved into auto manufacturing when business associates convinced him to manage the fledgling Buick Motor Co. late in 1904. Spectacular success at Buick gave him the wherewithal to found General Motors in 1908. Durant added Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Oakland and other brands to the GM roster, before a 1910 banking crisis forced him out. 4. Looking to build a new automobile after leaving GM, the irrepressible Billy Durant made a deal with Louis Chevrolet to produce the well-known racer’s dream car. -
