INDYCAR, along with its partners Project Lead The Way and Jostens, are very excited to introduce INDYCAR Future of Fast, a unique STEM-focused learning opportunity. In select North American race markets, we’ll invite local students to the track to learn about everything from car and engine design to tire compounds and fuel formulas. Hands-on activities and getting up close & personal with a race car will give students real-world examples of how science and math classes can lead to a fast-paced career in the world of motorsports. For more information, please visit indycar.com/FutureOfFast WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: TITLE RACE HEADS TO FINALE: The IZOD IndyCar Series championship is a two-man race between Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves. Dixon took advantage of Castroneves’ misfortune at Houston and took the point lead. He leads the three-time Indianapolis 500 winner by 25 heading into the finale, but Castroneves isn’t ready to give up. The championship will be decided in the final race for the eighth year in a row — which driver will win the title? KEEP AN EYE ON ED: Ed Carpenter claimed his first win as an owner/driver when he won the MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway in 2012, and he would like nothing more than to defend his title. Carpenter, who won the pole for the Indianapolis 500 in May, recorded all four of his top-10 finishes on ovals this season and has won the last two IZOD IndyCar Series season finales. Will he keep his streak going? FINAL LEG OF FUZZY’S TRIPLE CROWN: The MAVTV 500 will be a test of man and machine as the IZOD IndyCar Series drivers and teams will race 500 miles around one of the series’ fastest ovals. Tony Kanaan claimed a dramatic win in the Indianapolis 500 in May, while Scott Dixon was a surprise winner at Pocono in July. Can Kanaan sweep the 500-milers in 2013 and claim the Fuzzy’s Triple Crown bonus of $250,000? Or can Dixon add another bonus award to his 2013 résumé?.

  • The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500
The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Robert W. White Department of Sociology and Andrew J. Baker Department of Geography School of Liberal Arts IUPUI We thank Terri Talbert-Hatch and Pete Hylton for their comments and support of Motorsports Studies. Please direct correspondence to Robert White ([email protected]), Professor of Sociology and Director of Motorsports Studies, or Andrew Baker ([email protected]), Lecturer, Department of Geography, School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 425 University Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46202. 1 The Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500: Increasing Competition in Open-Wheeled Automobile Racing in the United States Abstract Over the course of its lengthy history, the popularity of open-wheeled automobile racing in the United States has waxed and waned. This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

FAST FACT The highest recorded temperature in the U.S. was 134° F (56.7° C) in Death Valley, Calif., on July 10, 1913. The highest recorded track temperature during an Indy car race was 137° F (58.3° C) on July 7, 2013 at Pocono Raceway. Graham Rahal raises his fist in celebration after taking the checkered flag at his home track of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, putting him within nine points of championship frontrunner Juan Pablo Montoya. John Cote/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS WEEKEND: MONTOYA LOOKS TO TIGHTEN GRASP ON LEAD: With wins at St. Petersburg and the Indianapolis 500, Juan Pablo Montoya remains atop the Verizon IndyCar Series point standings. The Colombian, who has won four of his previous 10 500-mile races, leads Graham Rahal by nine points and Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves and Will Power are within striking distance. Can Montoya repeat at Pocono and strengthen his hold on the series championship lead? ANDRETTI SEEKS BREAKTHROUGH WIN AT HOME TRACK: Marco Andretti will compete in a virtual hometown race at Pocono. Andretti can lean on family ties for some advice as Pocono is one of two tracks where all three generations of racing’s most famous family have had success. Andretti’s grandfather, open- wheel great Mario Andretti, won the 1986 race, while his father Michael won pole for the race in 1986. Marco claimed the pole for the race in 2013. KARAM RACES AT HOME: Like the Andretti family, Sage Karam hails from nearby Nazareth, Pa., and will be racing in front of friends and family.
