Scherz5 & Miguel Vences6 Evolutionary reduction of adult body size (miniaturization) has profound consequences for organismal biology and is an important subject of evolutionary research. Based on two individuals we describe a new, extremely miniaturized chameleon, which may be the world’s smallest reptile species. The male holotype of Brookesia nana sp. nov. has a snout–vent length of 13.5 mm (total length 21.6 mm) and has large, apparently fully developed hemipenes, making it apparently the smallest mature male amniote ever recorded. The female paratype measures 19.2 mm snout–vent length (total length 28.9 mm) and a micro-CT scan revealed developing eggs in the body cavity, likewise indicating sexual maturity. The new chameleon is only known from a degraded montane rainforest in northern Madagascar and might be threatened by extinction. Molecular phylogenetic analyses place it as sister to B. karchei, the largest species in the clade of miniaturized Brookesia species, for which we resurrect Evoluticauda Angel, 1942 as subgenus name. The genetic divergence of B. nana sp. nov. is rather strong (9.9‒14.9% to all other Evoluticauda species in the 16S rRNA gene). A comparative study of genital length in Malagasy chameleons revealed a tendency for the smallest chameleons to have the relatively largest hemipenes, which might be a consequence of a reversed sexual size dimorphism with males substantially smaller than females in the smallest species. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Scriptosaura catimbau, a new genus and species of elongate, fossorial, sand swimming eyelid-less gymnophthalmid li- zard is described on the basis of specimens obtained at Fazenda Porto Seguro, municipality of Buíque, State of Pernam- buco, in the Caatingas of northeastern Brazil. The type locality is entirely included within the area of the recently created Parque Nacional do Catimbau. The new lizard lacks external forelimbs, has rudimentary styliform hindlimbs and is fur- ther characterized by the absence of prefrontal, frontal, frontoparietal and supraocular scales, and by having one pair of chin shields. A member of the Gymnophthalmini radiation, the new genus is considered to be sister to Calyptommatus from which it differs externally by the absence of an ocular scale and absence of an enlarged temporal scale. Complex experimental investigations were conducted in the area of pool boiling heat transfer on extended surfaces with internal tunnels limited by perforated foil. The experiments were carried out for water and R-123 at atmospheric pressure. The tunnel surfaces were fabricated from 0.05 – 0.1 mm thick perforated copper foil (pore diameters: 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 mm) sintered with mini-fins formed by 5 and 10 mm high rectangular fins and horizontal inter-fin surface. The effect of the main fin height, pore diameters and tunnel pitch on nucleate pool boiling was examined. Substantial enhancement of heat transfer coefficient was observed for the investigated surfaces. The highest increase in the heat transfer coefficient was obtained for the 10 mm high fins – about 50 kW/m2K for water and 15 kW/m2K for R-123. The investigated surfaces showed boiling heat transfer coefficients similar to those of existing tunnel-pore structures. The European common lizard, Zootoca vivipara, is one of the very few reptile species with two reproductive modes, viz. viviparity and oviparity. Oviparity in this otherwise viviparous form has been known since 1927 for the allopat- ric Z. v. louislantzi. Only with the discovery of a second oviparous form, Z. v. carniolica, a parapatric occurrence of ovipa- rous and viviparous populations became conceivable. In this study, we (1) detect a contact zone where both forms meet, (2) find evidence for natural hybridization between both reproductive strains, and (3) compare the reproductive strategies of egg-layers and live-bearers independent from environmental interference. Thirty-seven gravid females were captured in a supposed contact zone in Carinthia, Austria, and maintained in the laboratory until oviposition or parturition. Clutch size, embryonic mortality and birth weight of the neonates were compared among the reproductively differentiated samples. Hybrids were identified by intermediate reproductive characteristics. Our results provide the first proof of a contact zone between live-bearing and egg-laying Z. -

Bite victims of varanid lizards often report persistent bleeding exceeding that expected for the mechanical damage of the bite. Research to date has identified the blockage of platelet aggregation as one bleeding-inducing activity, and destructive cleavage of fibrinogen as another. However, the ability of the venoms to prevent clot formation has not been directly investigated. Using a thromboelastograph (TEG5000), clot strength was measured after incubating human fibrinogen with Heloderma and Varanus lizard venoms. Clot strengths were found to be highly variable, with the most potent effects produced by incubation with Varanus venoms from the Odatria and Euprepriosaurus clades. The most fibrinogenolytically active venoms belonged to arboreal species and therefore prey escape potential is likely a strong evolutionary selection pressure. -

Fifteen specimens of the slow worm, Anguis fragilis (two juvenile, five males and eight females), collected in Trabzon and Bursa Provinces, Turkey, were examined for helminths. Anguis fragilis was found to harbour four species of helminths: one species of Digenea, Brachylaemus sp. and three species of Nematoda, Entomelas entomelas, Oxysomatium brevicaudatum and Oswaldocruzia filiformis. In addition, DNA isolated from the Nematodes was analysed with clustal w and blast computer programs for nucleotide sequences. Anguis fragilis from Turkey represents a new host record for Brachylaemus sp. Also, 28s rDNA sequencing of Oxysomatium brevicaudatum and Oswaldocruzia filiformis produced new nucleotide sequences submitted to Genebank (NCBI: National Center for Biotechnology Information).
