She has played the Newport Folk Festival, South by Southwest, and CMJ, and has been featured on BBC London radio and PRI’s Mountain Stage. Pauley has released two full-length albums, Elijah Drop Your Gun (2007) and The Science of Making Choices (2012), and her song “Devil’s Got My Secret” was featured in the 2011 film Peace, Love and Misunderstanding, starring Jane Fonda, Catherine Keener, and Elizabeth Olsen. Sat, Mar 2 at 10pm My Midnight Heart Puerto Rican-American singer-songwriter Angélica Allen, who has toured with Trans Siberian Orchestra, fronts My Midnight Heart, a group driven by intensely vivid lyrics and lush arrangements featuring echoing pianos, dreamy synths, and pared-down vocals. My Midnight Heart’s debut release, the four-track EP Chest of Hearts, was released in 2012. Fri, Mar 8 at 9pm Krissy Krissy Brooklyn-based pop-rocker Krissy Krissy has been performing her entire life. Her debut EP, Above All, is dedicated to her father who passed away in 2011. Above All features six songs written or co-written by Krissy Krissy and is centered on the theme of all types of love. The Huffington Post praised her for having a “distinct voice that stands out in a crowd,” and this March she brings that clear and honest sound to BAMcafé Live for the first time. Sat, Mar 9 at 9:30pm Renegade Sufi Composer Dawoud has been creating innovative music on the guitar and sitar for more than 40 years, playing everything from rock to jazz to Middle Eastern music. He has worked with a wide array of artists from around the world, producing film soundtracks and touring the US and Europe. Dawoud’s latest musical project, Renegade Sufi, is an ambient quartet performing original compositions with jazz and rock overtones. Fri, Mar 15 at 9pm Emily King The daughter of jazz musicians, Emily King was a regular on the New York City music circuit by the time she was a teenager. Her raw, soulful sound has garnered widespread praise, and in 2004 King signed a record deal with J records/Sony Music. In 2007 she released her debut album East Side Story, which earned her a Grammy-award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. King has toured with artists including John Legend and Maroon Five and has opened for artists such as Gnarls Barkley, Alicia Keys, and Erykah Badu. Mar 16 at 9pm Shelley Nicole's blaKbüshe Vocalist, bassist, actress, and poet Shelley Nicole and her band, blaKbüshe, personify soul music. Shelley Nicole’s blaKbüshe presents music that is at once funky and spiritual, and The Village Voice has called them “an ingenious musical evolution.” The group has performed at venues including the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom, B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, Blue Note, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and on World Café Live. Fri, Mar 22 at 10pm TamarRaqs Spring Equinox Hafla Tamar has studied Raqs Sharqi (bellydancing) with masters such as Arianna al Tiye, Dalia Carella, and Elena Lentini and has performed at venues including Falucka, Au Bar, Lafayette Grill, and Café Figaro. She returns to BAMcafé this season with special guests Carmine & Friends and Pure Onyx Movement, who will help her usher in the spring with her much celebrated hafla—“party” in Arabic, complete with Raqs Sharqi and music from the Middle East and North Africa. Sat, Mar 23 at 10pm TECLA TECLA is a classically trained pianist who has ventured into the worlds of hip-hop, reggae, punk-rock, electronica, and funk. She has toured throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia with Chrisette Michele, Das Racist, Gordon Voidwell, and Chairlift, among others. Her electronic Afro-funk sound and boundary-breaking lyrics have earned her a following on the New York City music scene, and this March she releases her debut album, We Are The Lucky Ones. Fri, Mar 29 at 9pm Sophia Ramos New York City-based rocker Sophia Ramos’ spitfire performances leave audiences mesmerized and intoxicated. Ramos has collaborated with artists including Jason Newsted of Metallica, Paul Simon, Karl Wallinger, Billy Bragg, Michelle Shocked, and Joey Ramone, and she has been a featured vocalist with Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine on their Lollapalooza tours. Sat, Mar 30 at 9pm Papo Vazquez Trombonist, composer and arranger Papo Vazquez is more than 35 years into a career that spans the jazz, Latin, Afro-Caribbean, and classical music worlds. Vazquez has performed with luminaries including Dizzy Gillespie, Mario Rivera, and Milton Cardona, and has toured Europe with the Ray Charles Orchestra. He is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, and in 2009 Vazquez was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. Credits Pepsi is the Official Beverage of BAM. BAM Harvey Theater is located two blocks from the main building at 651 Fulton Street (between Ashland and Rockwell Places). Both locations house Greenlight Bookstore at BAM kiosks. BAM Fisher, located at 321 Ashland Place, is the newest addition to the BAM campus and houses the Judith and Alan Fishman Space and Rita K. Hillman Studio.
