Sun Fire V20z Server Positioning

Introduction

The Sun Fire V20z server is the first in a new line of AMD Opteron(tm) based server products, forthcoming in 2004. Demonstrating Sun's commitment to deliver the most compelling x86 platforms in the market, this is also the first Sun product release resulting from the strategic alliance between Sun and AMD. The Sun Fire V20z is a dual processor 1U rack-mount server that offers 64-bit high performance computing with high performance x86 32-bit capability, as well as competitive pricing similar to other 32- bit x86 servers. The Sun Fire V20z server and associated offering now begin to address 2 key requirements collected in the “Voice Of the Customer” feedback that Sun has been receiving: 1) Customers want to run applications— either their own or from third-party developers—on systems that provide exceptional price/performance; and 2) customers want Sun to be the the single point of contact for these systems and associated services, because Sun is a recognized leader in network computing and Sun understands their needs. This JTF explains the product features and price/performance benefits that addresses the first requirements. Also presented are the services offered around the V20z servers that begin to address the second requirements. With its 64-bit performance, large memory, compute-cluster readiness, high performance 32-bit x86 capability, lights-out management, multiple OS support, peripheral and ISV support, the Sun Fire V20z is well suited for compute intensive applications such as oil & gas, EDA, MCAE, bio-science. In addition, these features enable the server to be easily deployed to provide customer solutions in web services and database management as well. The Sun Fire V20z server offers 3 CPU speeds at RR, providing customers the choice to obtain the appropriate price/performance for deploying their solution. Supporting dual AMD Opteron processors, interconnected with HyperTransport, the Sun Fire V20z server offers very fast CPU and memory access. Leading the industry by putting 16GB of memory in a 1U rack- mount server, the Sun Fire V20z server is well suited to solve database and technical problems that require large amounts of data to reside in memory. With a single architecture, the Sun Fire V20z server supports both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems and applications, offering high flexibility for customers that wish to run existing 32-bit x86 OS and

Sun Fire V20z Server Just the Facts 1 Final_JTF_020204_emb.sxw 02/02/2004 applications, and at the same time, migrate to the next generation 64-bit OS and applications. Using the same hardware architecture, customers can minimize staff training and support and still can achieve the migration to faster 64-bit applications. The Sun Fire V20z server supports multiple operating systems, including 64-bit Red Hat and SuSE Linux, as well as 32-bit Red Hat Linux. Solaris 9 x86 will be available initially in 32-bit, followed by 64-bit as soon as the OS is available in later 2004. Customers can purchase either Linux or Solaris from Sun and obtain complete system support from Sun. For those customers who also deploy 32-bit or 2003 servers, the Sun Fire V20z server is WHQL certified. Customers need to get support for these OS from a 3rd party. Delivering very high performance in a 1U rack-mount form factor, the Sun Fire V20z is designed for deployment in horizontal scaling cluster to solve complex computing problems that require large number of CPUs. Each server comes standard with dual Gigabit Ethernets and a high speed 133MHz PCI/X expansion slot that enable high speed system interconnect such as fibre channel, Myrinet, InfiniBand, or other such interconnects. In addition to having CPU, memory, and I/O performance that allow customers to build high performance clusters, each server comes standard with an independently operated Service Processor that provides key Lights-Out-Management (LOM) features, including remote system component status, OS load, and remote power on/off of the system. These management features could be accessed either in-band or out-of-band via IPMI v1.5 or CLI, or out-of-band via SNMP The Sun Fire V20z comes with a unique feature where there is a second management Ethernet port that allows the Ethernet management cables to be daisy- chained from server to server in a rack, enabling a single Ethernet cable need to be routed out of a rack full of Sun Fire V20z servers, simplifying the deployment of multiple Sun Fire V20z servers in data centers, helping customers to lower support costs. Special effort has been made to have Sun support for several PCI cards and Sun storage on this server. In addition, Sun Market Development is recruiting ISVs to support this server platform on Solaris x86 as well as Linux, for both 32-bit and 64-bit. In addition to offer the robust Solaris operating system, Sun also remains committed to the open-source Linux community and low-cost computing. For example, Sun provides a comprehensive Web services platform with Sun Java Enterprise System software to be offered , allowing customers to take advantage of Web-based enterprise applications using open, XML-based standards and transport protocols. The Sun Fire V20z offers customers a path from 32-bit to 64-bit x86 computing, and therefore has wide applicability to a multitude of applications, ranging from technical computing, to web services, to the emerging grid approach to data and database management from companies like Oracle. With its flexibility and performance, the Sun Fire V20z creates great opportunities for Sun direct sales and Sun partners to build compute, web services, and data management solutions for their customers. According to a recent IDC survey, in 2004, sales for 2P/1U servers are expected to reach over 650,000 units. Growth will continue to occur in subsequent years. The Sun Fire V20z server can address the key requirements for all these units. This server can compete with any 2P/1U server, with or Itanium or PowerPC or other CPUs. With price points similar to other 2P/1U Xeon servers, as well as high performance 32-bit x86 capability, the Sun Fire V20z server can replace any such Xeon based server. In addition, with outstanding 64-bit performance and low prices, the Sun Fire V20z server is expected to depress the emerging Itanium dual-processor servers. The Sun Fire V20z server, with competitive and compelling price/performance, enables a graceful transition from 32-bit to 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance and will help Sun compete in this rapidly growing market space.

Product Family Placement

The latest in the Sun Fire server product line, the Sun Fire V20z server complements the currently shipping Sun Fire 2P/1U V60x and 2P/2U V65x. The The 2P/1U Sun Fire V20z and V60x address similar markets,

Sun Fire V20z Server Just the Facts 2 Final_JTF_020204_emb.sxw 02/02/2004 where the V20z server provides outstanding 64-bit performance and high performance 32-bit x86 capability with competitive pricing, whereas the V60x provides the lowest pricing (similar to Dell 2P/1U server) with Intel Xeon CPUs, providing 32-bit x86 performance. In applications, where CPU performance or large memory (>4GB addressability) are key, the customers should consider the Sun Fire V20z servers. Where customers have a preference for the Intel CPU architecture (such as internal standardization on Intel), or where the lowest pricing is required, customers should consider the Sun Fire V60x. The Sun Fire V65x addresses a different market for 2P/2U, where applications demand more I/O connectivity or more internal disks or the requirements for redundant power supply. For these requirements, customers should consider the V65x server, before the V20z server. Outside of the x86 compatible 2P rack server offering, relative to the SPARC-based V210, V240, and the B1600 SPARC and x86 blade servers, the positioning of the V20z is that it offers the best performance for x86 applications in a 2P server The V210 and V240 offers the best SPARCPARC systems running with a proven and robust Solaris operating systems for customers who have standardized on SPARCPARC-based systems, and demand binary compatibility from 1-way to 106-way systems in their IT deployment. Relative to the blade servers, the V20z server again offers the best performance for x86 applications in a 2P server, whereas the B1600 with either SPARC or x86 blades offer the highest CPU density in a rack, but not necessarily the same level of performance per CPU as the V20z server. The B1600 is perfect for applications that require many independent threads, such as web services, and in environment that requires zero expertise in hardware support (the blade servers can be simply hot-swap in and out of the rack). The V20z are better suited to address applications that demand the fastest performance or high physical memory, such as technical computing or database management.

Formerly known as x86-64, AMD’s enhancements to the x86 architecture allow users of laptops, desktops, workstations, and servers operating within a 32-bit architecture to migrate seamlessly to the superior performance of 64-bit technology. This approach defines a new class of computing by combining full x86 compatibility, a high-performance 64-bit architecture, and the economics of an industry-standard processor. This new class of computing allows the technology industry to build solutions focused on customer needs while removing barriers to future innovation.

Figure 1. Architecture block diagram for the AMD Opteron processor Major enhancements over legacy x86 include: • Sixteen 64-bit general-purpose integer registers that quadruple the general-purpose register space available to applications and device drivers as compared to x86 systems. • Sixteen 128-bit XMM registers for enhanced multimedia performance to double the register space of any current SSE/SSE2 implementation. • A full 64-bit virtual address space with 40 bits of physical memory addressing and 48 bits of virtual addressing that can support systems with up to 256 terabytes of physical memory. • 64-bit operating systems to provide full, transparent, and simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit platform application multitasking. • A 128-bit wide, on-chip DDR memory controller that supports ECC and ChipKill technologies provides low-latency memory bandwidth which scales as processors are added.

HyperTransport Technology

The AMD Opteron processor with integrated-in HyperTransport technology links provides a scalable bandwidth interconnect among processors, I/O subsystems, and other chipsets.

Sun Fire V20z Server Just the Facts 11 Final_JTF_020204_emb.sxw 02/02/2004 HyperTransport technology interconnects: • Help to increase overall system performance by removing I/O bottlenecks and efficiently integrating with legacy buses, increasing bandwidth and speed, and reducing latency of processors. • Provide up to 6.4GB/sec. bandwidth per link at 16 x 16 bits, 800 MHz operation, providing sufficient bandwidth for supporting new interconnects.

Balanced I/O and PCI/X Expansion, with 133MHz/64bit Slot

The I/O architecture for the Sun Fire V20z server is designed such that it provides for a balanced I/O design, with high bandwidth connectivity to multiple devices with high bandwidth. As can be seen in the following figure, the AMD-8131 chip provides for Ultra320 SCSI and dual gigabit Ethernet support, while still providing for a PCI expansion slot running at 66MHz/64bit. The PCI-X bridge provides for the second full length PCI/X slot that runs at 133MHz/64bit. This PCI/X slot can be used to connect a high bandwidth, low-latency interconnect such as Myrinet or InfiniBand to make the Sun Fire V20z server a member of a horizontally scaled supercomputer. Although sounding complex, this I/O design is simply designed with a single HyperTransport off one of the two CPUs in the Sun Fire V20z system.

Sun Fire V20z Server Just the Facts 14 Final_JTF_020204_emb.sxw 02/02/2004 System Architecture

Overview

The Sun Fire V20z server has a very elegant and simple architecture, as shown below. There are 2 AMD Opteron processors, interconnected by a dedicated HyperTransport link. Each processor controls 2 pairs of DIMM slots, with 5.33GB/second access between processor and memory. Through the HyperTransport, each processor can access the other processor's memory. Using 2GB DIMMs, the Sun Fire V20z provides up to 16GB of memory. DDR1/333 ECC registered memory components sold by Sun are supported. A second HyperTransport link on the first processor connects to the AMD-8131 PCI/X bridge, where there are 2 PCI/X channels running at 133Mhz/64bit. One of these PCI/X channel is dedicated for full 133MHz/64-bit operation for a full-length PCI/X expansion card. The second PCI/X channel is split between a 66MHz/64bit expansion card and 2 on-board Gigabit Ethernet channels and a Ultra320 SCSI channel. The Gigabit Ethernet NICs are using a Broadcom controller, whereas the SCSI channel is controlled by LSI controller that provides a built-in RAID-1 mirroring feature. The AMD-8131 bridge also communicates with a AMD-8111 chip via another HyperTransport link. The AMD-8111 HyperTransport I/O hub provides the keyboard and mouse PS/2 connectivity, USB 1.1 connection, an IDE link to the CD or DVD option, as well as a floppy connection. The separately powered Service Processor (LOM) communicates with the 2 main system processors and the rest of the system via an management I2C bus. In a system that only has one processor, the processor must be placed into the designated processor slot that connects to the rest of I/O infrastructure; also this processor only has access to 2 pairs of memory slots or maximum of 8GB using 2GB DIMMs.

During the support period, if any new versions of SLES or RHEL for AMD64 are made available, users with current support entitlements have access to those new versions from the maintenance sites of Red Hat and SuSE. The premium support offering gives users the above entitlements and 24 x 7 support. Note: Premium is available in the Americas and will be available in Europe in Q1CY2004. Check with Sun Service for availability in other geographies. Subscriptions are available with or without media (CDs, manuals). This provides customers the flexibility to purchase Enterprise Linux in the most efficient manner to match their individual requirements. For example, a customer may have a full rack of Sun AMD64 servers and, while they need licenses for all units, the customer likely does not need media for all units.

XATO Options

XATO options will be available 04/06/04.

XATO allows the configuration of systems to exact customer requirements. This provides the customer with a fully tested and configured system that requires little, if any, additional configuration prior to deployment. All XATO orders require a working configuration. An XATO configuration can not be created without the minimum memory or disk required. This requirement allows proper testing at the factory prior to shipment. All configurations require one A55-AA base chassis (chassis, motherboard, power supply). A minimum of one CPU required. Up to two CPUs allowed (models must be identical) – one or two Opteron 242, 244, or 248 CPUs. No mixing of CPU models allows, e.g. Opteron 242 and 244 are an illegal configuration. A minimum of one memory option per CPU required. There are 4 memory slots per CPU. For best results, the following general rules apply: 1. Use identically-sized DIMMs for maximum memory interleaving performance. 2. Arrange DIMMs symmetrically in a 2 CPU system for maximum memory performance. Each CPU requires a minimum of 1 memory option (1GB, 2GB, or 4GB), up to a maximum of 2 memory options. Each memory option has 2 DIMMs (installed in pairs only). A fully configured 16-GB system requires two CPUs. Only 8 GB memory is possible in a single CPU system. Example: A single CPU system can utilize up to 2 memory options (4 DIMMs total for a maximum of 8 GB). The unpopulated second CPU socket prevents the use of the second memory bank (4 DIMM slots). A dual CPU system can utilize 2, 3, or 4 memory options (4, 6, or 8 DIMMs total for a maximum of 16 GB). Best results are obtained by arranging memory in a symmetric fashion, if possible. Example: A dual CPU system with 2 memory options (4 DIMMs total) works best with identical sizes (2 DIMMs in each memory bank). If the 2 memory options are dissimilar (for example, 1 GB [2 x 512 MB] and 2 GB [2 x 1GB] DIMMs), then memory performance is reduced.

Sun Fire V20z Server Just the Facts 37 Final_JTF_020204_emb.sxw 02/02/2004 However, any combination of 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4GB memory options is supported. A minimum of one disk drive is required. The Sun Fire V20z server with two Ultra320 SCSI drive bays. Drive options include 36 -GB, 73-GB capacities. Any combination of two Ultra320 SCSI drives is supported. If RAID-1 mirroring is turned on, then the drives must be of the same capacity. The optical drive is optional, but highly recommended if OS installation is required from optical media. The optical bay can support only one optical/floppy drive assembly: either CD/floppy or DVD/floppy.

Architecture Services

Sun’s Architecture Services assist customers in identifying new IT solutions from concept, design, and deployment that are built against the customer’s long-term technology strategy and architected for sustained business growth. Architecture Services are comprised of an architecture workshop, assessment, and roadmap services. • Architecture Workshop emphasizes the importance of building architectures with service-level requirements such as reliability, availability, scalability, and security. It can help customers accomplish their business goals and provide them with a high-level action plan for next steps. • Architecture Assessment examines the technology stack from data center to applications to determine the architecture’s ability to operate against a desired set of service level requirements. • Architecture Roadmap focuses on identifying, prioritizing, and documenting functional and service level requirements of the customer’s architecture.

SunReady™ Availability Assessment Service (SRAA)

The SunReady Availability Assessment (SRAA) Service assesses the ability of a customer’s IT infrastructure and organization to sustain appropriate access, performance, function, and service levels within limits and expectations defined by the customer and their end users. This service can be applied to a specific environment or business application. Sun’s service consultants conduct a comprehensive review of the effectiveness of the customer’s technical architecture and operational environment in meeting its availability goals for a particular application environment. The SRAA helps customers determine their IT infrastructure’s ability to meet its service level commitments to end users. It also prioritizes the gaps and risks to improve performance. The SRAA process includes the following: • A gap analysis that details the IT infrastructure’s ability to effectively and efficiently deliver the required service levels for the target application environment. • A scorecard detailing the strengths and areas of risk followed by a recommended action plan. The scorecard is based upon the gap analysis conducted during the review. • Recommendations and action plan from SRAA to identify and prioritize risk factors, set appropriate service level expectations for the target application environment, and justify future IT investment for the data center.
