These are weekends, when the novice cyclists can barely keep out of each other1s way, let alone worry about runners; and before and after work, with the fast moving commuters. And if common sense is not enough to make you change your ways, think about this. The Yarra Bikepath is now by law for bikes only - if you collide with a bike, your legal position will be as shaky as your bruised knee. Why am I writing this? Well, I am a runner and a cyclist, who thinks that both face too much competition from cars. I regularly cycle the bike track and run the footpath. On this route I can run with my eight-year-old son keeping pace with me on his bike. However, this Sunday morning he received such poor treatment from runners on his bikepath, I decided to do something about it. Amazingly, runners two and three abreast seemed to be so surprised to meet a bike on the bikepath, they couldn’t work out what to do. A group of six, running four abreast in the widest part, graciously gave up a full 6 inches on the side of the track for the bike. In summary then, some guidelines for using the bikepath: 1. Don!t use it there there is an alternative; 2. Donft run more than two abreast; 3. Run on the right (same as on the road); 4. Be prepared to meet a bike. ***************************************************************************************** We get constant requests at the office from women as to whether there are running groups in their area. They have been battling along, usually running alone, needing support and inspiration, and realise the benefits that can accrue from running with either a group, or just a partner, with differing viewpoints about running. There are several regular running groups in the Greensborough/Eltham area, as listed on page 4, but many requests come from other parts of the city. Please contact the office (00-1033) if you are willing to have your name and phone number circulated ONLY to other WOMEN members in your area, who could be looking for someone to run with. It doesn't take much time or effort to start a group going, even if to start with there are only two running together. One thing to get clear from the outset is how far and how fast. That way you should stay relaxed and just enjoy your run. While the nights are still long and dark, safety in numbers is essential for women who run, so get together and form regional groups to support each other. Be flexible, be prepared to compromise, and with any luck women’s running will improve and strengthen.
