González-Cózatl (2017) The genus Megadontomys is a Mexican endemic group of rodents with allopatric populations occurring in fragmented patches of cool-humid forest. In this study we used geometric morphometrics methods to assess patterns of morphological variation and differentiation in skull and mandible among and within species of the genus. ANOVA showed that sexual dimorphism was significant for skulls size P( < 0.01) but not for mandibles, and MANOVA indicated that both structures did not differ in shape between sexes. ANOVA reveled a significant difference among the three species (P < 0.01), M. nelsoni exhibit the largest skull. Canonical variate analyses and Goodall’s test found differences in both skulls and mandibles shape among species, being M. cryophilus and M. thomasi the most divergent. The comparison between phylogroups within M. thomasi also revealed significant differences in shape for both structures. Disparity assessment showed that M. -

Despite the greater amount of ecomorphological information compiled for extant rodent species, studies usually lack of morphological data on dentition, which has led to difficulty in directly utilizing existing ecomorphological data of extant rodents for paleoecological reconstruction because teeth are the most common or often the only micromammal fossils. Here, we infer the environmental ranges of extinct rodent genera by extracting habitat information from extant relatives and linking it to extinct taxa based on the phenogram of the cluster analysis, in which variables are derived from the principal component analysis on outline shape of the upper first molars. This phenotypic ``bracketing'' approach is particularly useful in the study of the fossil record Submitted 22 February 2017 of small mammals, which is mostly represented by isolated teeth. Carraway1 ABSTRACT.—Examination of published records, and morphometric and morphologic analyses of 3398 museum speci- mens, revealed that 4 genera including 30 monotypic and 5 polytypic species of shrews (Soricidae) occur in Mexico. Of these, 2 new species were named and 2 subspecies were heretofore unrecognized, 3 were reclassified, and 1 was ele- vated to species level. Cryptotis goldmani machetes, previously subsumed into C. g. goldmani, was reelevated based on ventral pelage color. Sorex veraepacis mutabilis contained 2 morphotypes, 1 of which matched that of the holotype; how- ever, the 2nd morphotype not only did not match that of the subspecific holotype, but also has a sympatric distribution. -

Here, we provide an overview of changes in our understanding of the systematics of living rodents, including species recognition and delimitation, phylogenetics, and classification, with emphasis on the last three decades. Roughly, this corresponds to the DNA sequencing era of rodent systematics, but the field is undergoing a transition into the genomic era. At least 248 species were newly described in the period 2000–2017, including novelties such as the first living member of Diatomyidae and a murid species without molars (Paucidentomys vermidax), thus highlighting the fact that our understanding of rodent diversity is going through an age of discovery. Mito-nuclear discordance (including that resulting from mitochondrial introgression) has been detected in some of the few taxonomic studies that have assessed variation of two or more unlinked loci. -

OCCASIONAL PAPERS OF THE MUSEUM OF ZOOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ANNARBOR, MICHIGAN NOTES ON CLASSIFICATION OF THE RODENT GENUS PEROMYSCUS NEW information which bears on classification of Pel-omyscus is the basis and reason for this report. It specifically supplements that pre- sented a few years ago (Hooper, 1958) when two classifications of the genus were compared-one based on conventional cranial information, the other suggested by data from the glans penis. The two schemes were in general agreement but the few points of disagreement were sufficiently impressive to suggest that the classifications should again be reviewed when data on additional species had been accumulated. We now have inlor~nationon phalli of 11 additional species. hilore- over, we have reviewed the earlier data (op. cit.) and, in addition, have examined skins and skulls of most of the kinds treated in both the 1958 and present reports. In studying the phalli of these 37 species of Peromyscus and Ochrotornys (the latter formerly in Peromyscus), and examining the skins and skulls of 34 of them, we conclude (1) that the phallic and cranial data are in hannony as long as no special weight is given to characters of the molar teeth and (2) that current supraspecific groupings in Pcromyscus (Miller and Kellogg, 1955; Hall and Kelson, 1959) need revision; some make little sense from the standpoint ol geographic distribution, evolution, total morphology, and biology of the species. An alternative, to us more meaningful, arrangement is suggested in the last few pages of this report. Prcceding that classification are descriptions of phalli of 18 species which received inadequate or no attention in the 1958 report. -
