WASHINGTON, D.C., November 18, 2014 – AARP is a proud sponsor of “Takarazuka,” the latest production of East West Players, the nation’s premier Asian American theater company. AARP is underwriting a special performance on Sunday, November 23 at 2pm at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center of the Arts in Los Angeles. AARP members receive a $10 discount on all performances of “Takarazuka” until Sunday, December 7. “AARP is proud to support organizations and programs that reflect the culture and diversity of our members,” said Daphne Kwok, AARP Vice President of Multicultural Markets and Engagement, Asian American and Pacific Islander Audience. “We applaud East West Players for producing artistic works and educational programs that portray the experience of Asian Americans age 50+ and congratulate them on their golden 50th anniversary season.” In the production, Yuko is the Top Star of the Takarazuka, an all-female Japanese performance troupe that has put on lavishly staged spectacles for decades. Facing retirement, Yuko begins to be haunted by the ghost of a former top star. Mysterious events happen at the theater as Yuko's sayonara performance looms and a new star is set to rise to the top in this thrilling and seductive new play. “We're grateful to AARP for their ongoing and generous support,” said Tim Dang, Producing Artistic Director of East West Players. “Our partnership has enabled us to continue to present works that entertain, enlighten, and resonate with our community.” “Takarazuka” is directed by Leslie Ishii and choreographed by Cindera Che. " Tapping my toe, just tapping my toe" she sings, to the tune of "Singin' in the Rain," before a crowd of kindergarteners at a downtown elementary school in Atlanta. "What a glorious feeling, I'm — nodding my head!" The kids gleefully tap their toes and nod themselves silly as they sing along. "Give yourselves a standing O!" Ms. Edson cries, when the song ends. Her charges scramble to their feet and clap their hands, sending their arms arcing overhead in a giant "O." This willowy 37-year-old woman with tousled brown hair and a big grin couldn't seem more different from Dr. Vivian Bearing, the brilliant, emotionally remote English professor who is the heroine of her play WIT — which has won such unanimous critical acclaim in its small Off- Broadway production. Vivian is a 50-year-old scholar who has devoted her life to the study of John Donne's "Holy Sonnets." Ellison, Advisor The purpose of this study was to examine the ways in which a professional theatre can impact its community and to provide useful suggestions for young producers hoping to start their own theatre. By using the West Virginia Public Theatre as a case study and by examining its three-part mission (to entertain, to educate, and to improve the quality of life), this study highlights both effective and ineffectual practices conducted by the theatre, its administration, and its staff to ascertain the efficacy of that mission. Furthermore, the numerous voices stemming from my personal interviews with a cross-section of the community have served as a principal source of data from which to analyze the theatre’s impact on the blue-collar, sports- focused society of North Central West Virginia. West Virginia Public Theatre was established in 1985 and since has grown to be a reputable summer stock company. Modeled on the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, West Virginia Public Theatre has developed from a small, unknown theatre performing in a parking lot tent to a well-respected summer stock theatre with aspirations of further developing into a regional company.

    National Playwright Residency Program PROGRAM PARTICIPANT BIOS PLAYWRIGHTS Murielle Borst-Tarrant Murielle Borst-Tarrant (Kuna/Rappahannock Nations) is an author, playwright, director, producer, cultural artist, educator, and human rights activist. Murielle began working as an artist early in her life with Spiderwoman Theatre. After attending Long Island University, she began combining Native American myth and creation stories to help compose a subgenre of literature referred to as Indigenous Fantasy. She is the author of the book series The Star Medicine and short stories published by Miami University Press. She is the Artist Director of Safe Harbor Indigenous Collective. She has produced, wrote, and directed Don’t Feed the Indians- A Divine Comedy Pageant! which premiered at La MaMa in 2017. She works on the deconstructing the pedagogy of the arts within Native communities in the NYC education system. Nominated for the Rockefeller grant in 2001, she won a Native Heart Award. She served as the Special Assistant to the North American Regional representative to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Global Indigenous Woman’s Caucus Chair (North America) in 2013 to May of 2014. She has spoken at the Indigenous Women’s Symposium at Trent University, at the International Conference at the Muthesius Academy of Art in Kiel Germany, and the Norwegian Theater Academy. J.     Welcome to East West Players (EWP) and the world premiere of Man of God by Anna Moench, directed by Jesca Prudencio. The best art shifts our perceptions and allows us to see the world through someone else’s eyes. The fi rst time I read Man of God, the play led me to consider what it is like to be constantly subjected to the male gaze. Over the last two years, we have Photo by Mike Palma. seen global movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp challenge institutionalized sexism and pave the way for engaging and meaningful conversations about the devastating impact of sexual violence, particularly towards women. These movements feel like a watershed moment, but there is still much work to be done. Man of God is wildly funny, shocking, and harrowing. Like the best works of art, it challenges us to do better. Thank you to the amazing cast and crew that have helped bring this production to life. It’s rare to have an entire cast making their EWP debuts, and it is my honor to introduce you to Katherine, Michele, Roy, SunHee, and Sandy.
