For the species listed in Table 1 below, basic information such as range (in this case county distribution), habitat, and key identification characteristics accompany a photograph of each species. This information comes from a variety of sources that includes the Manual of the Vascular Flora of Texas, Biota of North America Project, knowledge of the authors, and various other publications (cited in the text). All photographs are used with permission and are fully credited to the copyright holder and/or originator. Other items, but in particular scientific publications, traditionally do not require permissions, but only citations to the author(s) if used for scientific and/or nonprofit purposes. Names, both common and scientific, follow those in USDA NRCS (2015). When identifying milkweeds in the field, attention should be focused on the distinguishing characteristics listed for each species. -

Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L. The projects, both conducted by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, are two distinct projects that are highly integrated with respect to methodology and fieldwork. Both projects utilized the same Natural Heritage methodology that is used throughout the globe, and both searched for and assessed the plants, animals, and plant communities on the Colorado Natural Heritage Program’s list of rare and imperiled elements of biodiversity. Each report prioritizes potential conservation areas based on the relative significance of the biodiversity they support and the urgency for protection of the site. All information explaining Natural Heritage methodology and ranks is repeated in each report, so that each report can stand alone and be used independently of the other. This report, Survey of Critical Biological Resources of Pueblo County, presents all potential conservation areas identified in Pueblo County that support rare and imperiled plants, animals, and significant plant communities, including wetland and riparian areas. -

The sedimentary units that comprise the hills are Carlile shale, Greenhorn limestone and Graneros shale, dark-gray shale, gray limestone, and gray shale (Johnson 1969 geologic map). The vegetation of the hills is tightly associated with the geology and is noticeably different than the surrounding prairie in that it is dominated by junipers and occasional pinons and generally has very little soil build up thus giving a white hue to the hills. The whiteness of the hills is due to the white-gray shale and limestone substrate. Dominant vegetation types include shortgrass prairie and scattered juniper woodlands ( Juniperus monosperma). The prairie is in good to excellent condition despite military tank traffic. The understory varies from sparse to dense vegetation depending on slope, aspect, and grazing regime. The outwash areas are the bajadas of the hills and are comprised of colluvial soils derived from the eroding shale hills. These outwash areas are generally dominated by grasses and occasional shrubs, especially cholla ( Cylindropuntia imbricata) and four-winged saltbush (Atriplex canescens). -

Citation 2 Introduction The Desert Southwest harbors at least 41 of the 76 milkweed (Asclepias spp.) species known to exist in the lower 48 states. The species richness of milkweeds in this region is influenced by the tremendous diversity and range of vegetation types, soils, topography, climate and the exposure of unusual rock types that occur over more than a 9,000 foot elevation range. The nectar of milkweed flowers is attractive to dozens of insects including bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds. The bees that milkweed flowers attract to agricultural landscapes are important for pollinating a wide variety of vegetable forage and fruit crops. Milkweeds are named for their milky, latex sap, which contains alkaloids and cardenolides, complex chemicals that make the plants unpalatable to most animals. The plants have fleshy, pod-like fruits (follicles) that split when mature, releasing the seeds. Anderson. i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) performed field surveys and rare plant mapping for five select sensitive plant species at Fort Carson: dwarf milkweed (Asclepias uncialis ssp. uncialis), round-leaf four-o'clock (Mirabilis rotundifolia), Arkansas Valley evening primrose (Oenothera harringtonii), Pueblo goldenweed (Oonopsis puebloensis), and Arkansas River feverfew (Parthenium tetraneuris). The species selected are among the Colorado Species of Special Concern identified by Fort Carson and some are on the list of Species at Risk on Department of Defense (DoD) installations. -
