Perspectives on Medicine

Jeff Edwards ’78, M.D. Biology and Interdisciplinary

Jeff graduated from Lawrence in 1978 and attended University of Wisconsin-Madison for medical school. He was in Wichita and Saginaw for residency and has practiced in Southern Ohio; Minocqua, WI; Aniston, AL; and Ironwood, MI. He is a full service general obstetrician/gynecologist.

David Hines ’76, M.D. Founding Partner of Metro Infectious Disease Consultants Biology and Chemistry

David Hines enjoyed Lawrence way too much, and lucky for him, a B average kept him out of all the US medical schools. He married his Lawrentian sweetheart, went to Guadalajara for 2 years, and transferred to Rush in Chicago for his 3rd and 4th years of Medical school. He wouldn’t trade his education at Lawrence, in Mexico, and in Chicago for anything in the world.

Robert Trettin ’79 Biology and Interdisciplinary

Robert Trettin, D.D.S. serves as Vice President, Regional Operations for ADPI. He joined American Dental Partners, Inc. in January 2005 as Regional Director of Operations. Previously, he held the title of V.P. of Operations at ADP of Wisconsin beginning in November 2000. Dr. Trettin also currently holds the title of President of Wisconsin Dental Group, S.C. since January of 1998. WDG, S.C. has been an affiliate of ADPI since 1996. In addition, Dr. Trettin is also President of Advanced Dental Specialists, LLC another affiliate of ADPI in Wisconsin since 2008.

Dr. Trettin received his B.A. in Interdisciplinary Biology from Lawrence University in 1979, a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Northwestern University in 1985 and also completed a certificate program in Business Management from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in 2008.

Melody Waring ’07 Project Administrator at PATH Government

Melody graduated from Lawrence with a Government major in 2007. Since then, she has lived in Belize, interning with a volunteer agency; conducted impact analysis and resource development during an internship with a Fair Trade labeling organization in Oakland; served 2 years as an AmeriCorps VISTA with an East African refugee community-based organization; managed the grant portfolio for a land-ownership model of international development; and, most recently, worked on “Ultra Rice,” a nutrition project for the major global health organization PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health). Melody lives and works in Seattle, Washington, and is applying for dual Master degree programs in Public Health & Social Work.

Hugh is a 1980 Lawrence graduate. He is a Chicago Based Commercial banker; currently employed by Bank that is doing acquisitions of failed banks in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois.

Jamie Reeve ’95 Vice President, Wealth Strategies Northern Trust History

Jamie Reeve is the poster child for liberal arts majors who “made it” into the business world. He works for a global investment managers/world-class fiduciary, yet he had absolutely no idea about this world when he graduated from LU. He took to heart what President Rik Warch pledged and found a personally challenging and professionally rewarding path. Your business “here” truly is to learn. It’s your opportunity to make the most of it.

Mark Sprtel ’10 Trade Desk Specialist Associated Bank, N.A. Economics

Mark graduated from Lawrence in 2010 with a BA in economics. He worked as an investment adviser for Appleton Group Wealth Management, LLC earning his Series 65 in the process. He currently works on the Trade Desk as a Trade Desk Specialist for the brokerage arm of Associated Banc Corp, Associated Investment Services. While working for Associated he earned the Series 7 and Series 66 licenses.

Lawrence Scholars in Arts & Entertainment – Theatre

Laura Blegen ’00 MBA Candidate, Bolz Center for Arts Administration UW-Madison Music and Theatre

Laura worked for several years as an independent stage manager and director before transitioning into administration. She spent three years as the Managing Director at Stage Left Theatre in Chicago before beginning the MBA program with a focus in Arts Administration at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ted Chapin ’72 President of Rodgers & Hammerstein English and Theatre Arts

Ted has been President of Rodgers & Hammerstein for nearly 30 years. According to Ted, “it is rare for a job to last that long and remain interesting!” He is on many theater- related committees and boards in New York, including the American Theatre Wing that owns the Tony Awards. In 2003 his book EVERYTHING WAS POSSIBLE - THE BIRTH OF THE MUSICAL “FOLLIES” was published by Alfred A. Knopf.

Elizabeth Cole ’63 Actor English

Liz is a professional actor whose career has been primarily on regional stages with forays into such TV shows as “Seinfeld,” “ER,” “Star Trek,” and “Judging Amy.” She originated the leading role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play WIT and tours with her solo version, “The Wisdom of WIT”. Liz also performs and lectures in healthcare venues on topics related to the humanities in medicine.

Dominic Fumusa ’91 Actor Government

Dominic currently plays “Kevin Peyton” in Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.” Other television: “Damages,” “,” “,” “Brotherhood,” “Kings,” “Bones,” “Numbers,” “NYPD Blue,” “Hack,” “Threshold,” “Law & Order” and “CSI.” Films include “Allegiance”, “Helena From the Wedding”,” “Management”, “Staten Island” (aka “Little New York”), “This is a Story about Ted & Alice” (2008 Cannes), “Dealbreaker”, “Grilled”, and “The Guru.”

NY theater: Wait Until Dark (Broadway debut), A Flea in Her Ear (Roundabout), premieres of Melissa James Gibson’s [SIC] (SoHo Rep), Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play (Epic Ensemble), ’s Fault Lines (Naked Angels) and Brett Leonard’s Ninth & Joanie (LAByrinth). Fumusa originated the role of ‘Toddy Koovitz’ in Richard Greenberg’s Tony winning Take Me Out (Donmar Warehouse/The Public) and created ‘Vince’ in Stephen Belber’s Tape (Naked Angels). Regional: Guthrie, Huntington, Kennedy Center, Actors Theater of Louisville, Williamstown, NYSAF, Stratford Festival of Canada and Chicago Shakespeare.

David Hawkanson ’69 Executive Director Steppenwolf Theatre Company Threatre and Drama

Prior to Steppenwolf, David was the Managing Director of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the artistic leadership of Joe Dowling. Before the Guthrie, he served for eight years as the Managing Director of Hartford Stage Company in Connecticut with Artistic Director Mark Lamos. Earlier in his career, he was Managing Director of the Arizona Theatre Company. He was a former senior staff member at the National Endowment for the Arts and subsequently chairman of its Theater Program. He has also had an active career as an arts management consultant and trustee for many national organizations and foundations. He currently serves as a trustee of Door County’s Peninsula Players and the League of Chicago Theatres and is Chairman of the Arts Alliance Illinois. He is a graduate of Lawrence University.

Brandy Kline ’00 Production Manager, Company Manager, AEA Stage Manager Theatre and Drama

Currently employed as the Production Manager and Company Manager of Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Brandy is also an active Actors’ Equity Association stage manager. After receiving a BA in Theatre from Lawrence University, and a brief foray in London as a waitress and a West End usher, she studied stage management and props at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and worked as a production assistant, costume crafts artisan and stagehand at the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Other adventures include being a house technician at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a props intern at the Spoleto Festival USA and stage managing, on occasion, site specific productions with Wild Space Dance Company. Brandy is based in Milwaukee and honed her craft working in various capacities of stage management, prop design, wardrobe, electrics and stage crew for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Bialystock & Bloom, Renaissance Theaterworks, Next Act Theatre, Skylight Opera Theatre, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Danceworks, Alverno College and UWM.

John O’Boyle ’69 John O’Boyle Productions Theatre and Drama

John has run a not-for-profit, been an Olympic track coach, and been a commercial real estate developer prior to becoming a Broadway producer. John currently is working on two shows that will open on Broadway this spring and a movie being shot in California. Working on Broadway and living in NYC are dreams he never had when he was a student at Lawrence.
