A Case Study of a Public Television Brand Campaign
POWER BRANDING BY WSIU: A CASE STUDY OF A PUBLIC TELEVISION BRAND CAMPAIGN by Kyla J. Zaggy B.A., Indiana University, 1985 A Research Paper Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Science degree College of Mass Communication and Media Arts in the Graduate School Southern Illinois University Carbondale August, 2011 RESEARCH PAPER APPROVAL POWER BRANDING BY WSIU: A CASE STUDY OF A PUBLIC TELEVISION BRAND CAMPAIGN by Kyla J. Zaggy A Research Paper Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in the field of Professional Media and Media Management Studies Approved by: John L. Hochheimer, Ph. D., Chair Graduate School Southern Illinois University Carbondale June 29, 2011 AN ABSTRACT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER OF Kyla J. Zaggy, for the Master of Science degree in Professional Media And Media Management Studies, presented on June 27, 2011, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: POWER BRANDING BY WSIU: A CASE STUDY OF A PUBLIC TELEVISION BRAND CAMPAIGN MAJOR PROFESSOR: John L. Hochheimer, Ph.D. The focus of this research paper is a case study charting the development of the WSIU brand campaign for television. WSIU Public Broadcasting is in the midst of a brand roll out campaign with its own positioning strategy centralized in its tagline, Powered by You®. For WSIU-TV, the idea is to create soft sell testimonial spots in which WSIU supporters engage the audience with compelling stories about how public television has made an impact on their lives. By comparing the elements of branding and practices alongside WSIU’s Powered by You campaign, an attempt will be made to characterize and specify the brand, clarify the campaign strategy through its positioning, and identify the successes while offering suggestions to areas that were overlooked. -

PUBLIC BROADCASTING: a MEDIUM in SEARCH of SOLUTIONS John W
PUBLIC BROADCASTING: A MEDIUM IN SEARCH OF SOLUTIONS JoHN W. MACY, JR.* INTRODUCTION In its simplest and most comprehensive definition, a communications system is a process in which creative communicators become aware of the expressed and some- times unexpressed needs of the users of the system and responsively collect and provide information, entertainment, and other resources toward the satisfaction of these needs. Despite the often quoted and now popular belief that in electronic com- munications systems "the medium is the message,"' the design of a system in which the message is itself the message-and the medium is merely a means of delivering a diversity of messages of intrinsic value to the users-is a mandate for radio and television in the decade of the 1970s. This is one of the basic philosophies behind the approach of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) as it builds and develops the public sector of broadcasting. Some time ago Robert Oppenheimer was quoted as saying, "What is new is new not because it has never been there before, but because it has changed in quality."2 This is surely what is new about the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. But to understand the nature and direction of the qualitative changes brought about by its creation and activities, it is necessary to look first at what was there before and how the Corporation came into being. I BACKGROUND OF PUBLIC BROADCASTING Over the past fifty years, the American public, through its elected representatives and otherwise, has made a series of choices to encourage the development of a public alternative in the field of communications. -
A Retrospective Analysis of Vertical Mergers in Multichannel Video Programming Distribution Markets: the Comcast-NBCU Merger
PHOENIX CENTER FOR ADVANCED LEGAL & ECONOMIC PUBLIC POLICY STUDIES 5335 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Suite 440 Washington, D.C. 20015 Tel: (+1) (202) 274-0235 • Fax: (+1) (202) 318-4909 www.phoenix-center.org Lawrence J. Spiwak, President 16 March 2018 VIA EMAIL Douglas Rathbun Competition Policy and Advocacy Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 950 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Room 3413 Washington, DC 20530 RE: USDOJ Roundtable on Antitrust Consent Decrees Dear Mr. Rathbun: The Department announced that it intends to hold a public roundtable on April 26, 2018 which will focus on antitrust consent decrees, including the regulatory nature of consent decrees that involve behavioral remedies. To help inform the discussion, please find attached a copy of a recent Phoenix Center paper entitled A Retrospective Analysis of Vertical Mergers in Multichannel Video Programming Distribution Markets: The Comcast-NBCU Merger. In this paper, Phoenix Center Chief Economist Dr. George S. Ford presents a retrospective analysis of the price effects of the Comcast-NBCU merger. In particular, Dr. Ford conducts an econometric analysis of data on the prices paid for programming by multichannel video programing distributors (“MVPDs”) before and after the transaction and finds no evidence that Comcast’s programming prices rose after the merger. The analysis covers general interest programming, news channels, and national and regional sports networks. Given these results, Dr. Ford concludes that there is either a lack of a net positive effect on incentives to raise programming prices above competitive levels following the vertical merger or that the behavioral remedies placed on the Comcast-NBCU merger were effective. -
